Razorbacks land Garden City defensive tackle Mahonri Maiava for 2027 class

Arkansas didn’t have to look too hard to find their newest defensive lineman.

They just had to get him to Fayetteville.

Mahonri Maiava, a 6-foot-5, 315-pound defensive tackle from Garden City (Kan.) Community College, committed to Arkansas on Tuesday after wrapping up an official visit to campus over the weekend.

He made the announcement on X, writing simply he thought he looked good in red.

The pledge gives the Hogs their 21st public commitment in the 2027 recruiting class and adds another body to a defensive line that’s been a priority for the staff this cycle.

Maiava is a native of Samoa who grew up near Apia, the capital city on the island of Upolu. He attended Vaiola College School before making his way to the middle of the country to play at Garden City.

When his plane touched down in Northwest Arkansas over the weekend, the landscape caught his attention right away.

The scenery felt familiar, he told Danny West of HawgSports.com, saying the hills and greenery reminded him of where he grew up.

That connection turned out to be a meaningful part of his decision. The Razorbacks beat out initial offers from Old Dominion, Western Michigan and Louisiana-Monroe to land his commitment.

Defensive line coach Kynjee’ Cotton was the one who discovered Maiava during a recruiting trip and moved quickly to set up the official visit during the final open weekend of the summer. It didn’t take long for the visit to do its job.

The food made an impression, Maiava said, but so did everything else.

The timing worked out well for both sides. Maiava is set to graduate from Garden City in December, which means he’d report to Fayetteville in January and be available for the 2027 season.

He’s already shown he can contribute at the college level, recording nine tackles and two tackles for loss across seven games as a freshman in 2025. He also recovered a fumble in that stretch.

Maiava closes out visit with easy answer

Maiava had other visits lined up before making his decision, but he didn’t need them. He had a few stops set up with other schools, he told West.

His reasoning went beyond the scenery and the food. The coaching staff left an impression on him throughout the weekend, and comfort level mattered as much as anything else.

The Razorbacks also hosted several other visitors over the weekend, including high school prospects Alvin Mosley, linebacker Bryce Breeden and running back Tylek Lewis, along with other under-the-radar JUCO options. Maiava was the one who pulled the trigger.

His commitment joins a 2027 class that’s now 21 deep. The offensive side includes quarterback Cason Myers, running back Jeremiah Dent, wide receivers Jabari Watkins and Darion Moseley, tight end Parker Keenan, three interior linemen in Odaefe Oruru, Bradley Sturdivant and Henry Frazier, and offensive tackles Alijah Shaw, Judah Gumbs and Teagan Parizek.

On defense, the group includes interior linemen Eli Thornton and James Stewart, edge rusher Keith Richmond, linebacker Will Caston, cornerbacks Kevin Grant and John Catlin IV and safety Jameer Cantrell. Maiava slots in as the third defensive lineman in the class.
