Arkansas fans have a fun stat floating around this summer.
New head coach Ryan Silverfield holds a winning mark against several coaches who now sit in SEC head chairs. That’s a nice line to hang your hopes on.
But before anyone starts planning a parade route, it’s worth asking who’s been right about Razorback coaching hires lately.
The answer isn’t encouraging. Athletic director Hunter Yurachek is the man who brought Silverfield to Fayetteville, and he’s also the same man who once called the Chad Morris hire a home run before Morris ever coached a game.
Morris went on to finish 4-18 overall with zero SEC wins across two seasons. That’s not a small miss.
That’s about as bad as a coaching hire can go at this level.
Yurachek’s track record deserves a look too
Then came Sam Pittman, hired in 2020 after never once serving as a college head coach anywhere.
Pittman had spent his whole career coaching offensive linemen, not running programs. Then all the rules he’d spent learning changed in 60 days as fallout of a global pandemic where people lost common sense.
He did have one strong year in 2021, going 9-4 and beating Penn State in a bowl game.
Outside that season, though, his tenure was a mixed bag that ended with him getting fired five games into 2025.
Add it all up and something jumps out.
Over Yurachek’s nine seasons running Arkansas athletics, the Razorbacks have posted a 2-10 record three separate times, in 2018 under Morris, in 2019 under Morris again, and in 2025 under Pittman and interim coach Bobby Petrino.
Three of nine seasons landing at rock bottom isn’t bad luck. It’s a pattern that fans should keep in mind before assuming the man picking the coaches has this figured out.
None of that means Silverfield can’t succeed. He built a strong reputation at Memphis and he’s earned the shot he’s getting.
But Hogs fans have watched their athletic director sell them on a coach before, only to watch it collapse fast.
Confidence from the front office hasn’t lined up with results nearly as often as anyone in Fayetteville would like.
What history actually tells Arkansas fans
The Razorbacks enter this season picked to finish at the bottom of the SEC again, and Silverfield has leaned on his past record against a few current SEC coaches to push back against that outlook.
It’s a fair point to raise. Coaches do carry real experience with them from job to job, and beating a rival more than once isn’t nothing.
Still, remember that Yurachek stood behind Morris with just as much confidence, and that hire produced one of the worst stretches in program history.
He also handed the keys to a first-time head coach in Pittman, hoping experience as an assistant would translate.
Sometimes it did and sometimes it failed spectacularly. Two out of three major hires under this athletic director have ended in disappointment, and that context belongs right next to any optimistic coaching stat this offseason.
Arkansas supporters have every right to want good news after a rough stretch.
Just don’t let one favorable stat erase the last nine years of evidence about how these hiring decisions have actually turned out.
The proof will come on the field this fall, not from a stat sheet built on games played somewhere else entirely.
