Hogs can’t get timely hits in loss at series opener at Mississippi State

• Box Score

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Junior shortstop A.J. Belans tallied her eighth multi-hit game of the season but the Razorbacks left 10 runners on base Saturday evening in a 3-0 loss in their series opener at Mississippi State.

Including Belans’ output, the top four in the lineup had five of Arkansas’ six hits in the game.

With the setback, Arkansas falls to 27-17 overall and 5-14 in SEC play.

The Razorbacks’ scoring chances started early with a bases-loaded opportunity in the first. With two outs and Tori Cooper on first, Belans singled to left and Nicole Schroeder drew a walk to put a Razorback at each base.

However, the home team got out of the jam with a fly ball to center. Arkansas had runners on first and second, again with two outs, in the second but Mississippi State starter Cassady Knudsen responded with a strikeout.

Madison Yannetti started the would-be rally in the second with a base hit to left field. She reached for a second time with a walk in the fourth inning.

The Mesquite, Texas, native is hitting .333 over the last nine games, collecting hits in seven of the nine. Yannetti has raised her season batting average nearly 20 points during the stretch.

In her 10th complete-game effort of the season, freshman Autumn Storms took the loss while giving up three runs on six hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

Saturday’s outing marked Storms’ 12th start of the season with no walks allowed. Overall, she has given up just 29 walks in 140.1 innings this season.

After scoring in the second, Mississippi State (33-14, 7-9 SEC) added another tally with a home run in the fourth and pushed across an insurance run with an RBI single in the sixth.

Arkansas loaded the bases for a second time in the fifth inning. Leading things off, Loren Krzysko legged out an infield base hit.

She has reached safely in seven of eight game since being inserted into the Razorbacks’ starting lineup.

Belans doubled to right center and Schroeder drew another walk—a four-ball free pass—to load the bases. The home team once again got out of trouble with Alexis Silkwood on in relief recording the final eight outs of the game without allowing a run.

Game two of the weekend series between Arkansas and Mississippi State is scheduled for Sunday at 6 p.m. on the SEC Network with additional coverage available online through the WatchESPN app.

Razorbacks add to list of NCAA qualifiers at ‘McDonnell’ on Saturday

• John McDonnell Results

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas persevered through the damp and chilly weather conditions, adding to its ever-growing list of NCAA West preliminary round qualifiers on Saturday evening at John McDonnell Field.

Event Winners

Arkansas 4-x-100-meter relay quartet of Roy Ejiakuekwu, Kemar Mowatt, Josh Washington and Kenzo Cotton were the first event winners of the day. The foursome posted a new meet record of 39.28 out of lane five to capture the event title. Cotton was also the top collegiate performer in the 100, placing second overall with a time of 10.21 behind Olympic gold medalist Omar McLeod. Cotton capped his day with a win in the 200 off an NCAA West top-10 time of 20.59.

The Razorback men picked up three more victories on the track courtesy of junior Larry Donald (110 hurdles), senior Mowatt (400 hurdles) and sophomore Obi Igbokwe (400). Donald won the high hurdle competition with a wind-legal season’s best. Mowatt dominated the intermediate hurdles, crossing the finish line with a new PR of 50.44 to earn a place inside the NCAA top-12. Igbokwe raced to a program top-five performance, clocking 45.54 to move up to No. 8 on the NCAA outdoor performance list.

Arkansas’ final event victory on the track was secured by three-time All-American Jack Bruce in the 1,500. Currently ranked third in the NCAA in the 5,000, Bruce was paced to a personal-best performance of 3 minutes, 41.45 seconds by fellow All-American teammate Alex George. The pair now not only control the SEC 5K leader boards but lay claim to spots among the top-four best 1,500-meter runners in the conference. George and Bruce also rank inside the top-12 best in the 1,500 in the NCAA West region.

Two-time NCAA national champion Clive Pullen was the top Razorback performer in the field, opening his final outdoor season with a victory in the triple jump. Pullen only needed one leap to book his trip the NCAA West preliminary round and ended the day with a best of 16.03m/52-7 1/4, shutting down after three jumps to save his legs for a warmer day. Harrison Schrage and Ken Legassey also captured event titles in the field, winning the long jump and high jump, respectively.

Additional Notable Performances

• Rhayko Schwartz posted his first sub-47 second 400-meter performance (46.76) as a Razorback finished second.
• Roy Ejiakuekwu finished top-three in the 100 and 200.
• Erich Sullins finished top-three in the hammer and discus throws.

Arkansas will return to action tomorrow as combined events performers Lane Austell, Brad Culp, Derek Jacobus and Gabe Moore continue their decathlon duel with Wisconsin at 10 a.m. with the 110 hurdles. Moore currently leads the group with a day one total of 3,963 points while Jacobus closely trails in third with 3,841 points. Austell and Culp are poised to get up into mix as both multis have historically surged back in the day two events.

Arkansas finishes 2-under par at second day of SEC Championship

Sophomore Kaylee Benton’s 2-under round paired with even par rounds from Alana Uriell and Summar Roachell kept Arkansas in the hunt after day two at the 2017 Southeastern Conference Championship on Saturday.

The three-day event wraps up on Sunday with Arkansas in third place, just six shots behind leader No. 8 Florida and one back of No. 6 Georgia who is in second place.

Arkansas was one of four teams who shot under par in round two posting a 287 on Saturday for 570 (283–287) overall. Florida moved up two spots and leads the field with 284–280—564.

Uriell leads Arkansas and is tied for fifth-place overall in the 70-player field. The Carlsbad, California, native is in the clubhouse shooting 68–72—140. A top-10 finish would be the best of Uriell’s career at this event.

Uriell’s scorecard featured 10 consecutive holes with a par score before she birdied the 11th hole. She remained one-under until the 16th hole, which she bogeyed, moving back to even on the day.

Benton posted her 10th par-or-better round shooting a 2-under 70 for the Razorbacks. She is tied for 11th place with senior Roachell. The duo are each counting 143 for the Razorbacks after two rounds.

Benton played the front nine even and picked up birdies on No. 10 and No. 16 to finish with a 70. Benton, Roachell and Cara Gorlei all birdied the 10th hole.

Sophomore Gorlei is tied for 20th overall shooting 71–73—144 and sophomore Maria Fassi rounds out the Razorback scores. Fassi is tied for 55th with 73-79—152.

Fassi had a run on the back nine with four birdies over a six-hole stretch leading Arkansas to 30 birdies in two rounds.

From Coach Shauna Estes-Taylor

“I feel like today was a little tougher as far as the hole locations. It was a little trickier out there. There were a couple of different tee boxes with some different hole locations but overall I think we did a really good job. It just wasn’t as easy. I thought they fought really hard. Yesterday we made a lot of putts and today we probably hit more greens and didn’t quite get as many putts to fall. We are in a wonderful position going into the final round.”

Notes
Arkansas’ round one 5-under 283 was the team’s best round in the five-year history of the SEC Championship at Greystone
The 283 was the first time since 2010 that Arkansas posted an under-par round at the SEC Championship
The Razorbacks’ back-to-back under par rounds is a program-first at the SEC Championship

Strong pitching paces Arkansas in win to even Auburn series

Box Score (PDF)

AUBURN, Ala. — Arkansas came from behind Saturday afternoon, defeating 10th-ranked Auburn, 7-3, at Plainsman Park.

After trailing 3-0 after the first two innings, a Jared Gates homer and a strong bullpen led the Hogs to their 12th conference victory of the year and forced a rubber match for the series on Sunday.

Razorback starting pitcher Trevor Stephan labored through 1.1 innings and was relieved early in the game after the Tigers (29-12, 11-6 SEC) struck for three runs.

However, Arkansas (32-9, 12-5 SEC) answered with three runs of their own in the third inning, two from a home run by Gates and two more in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Dominic Fletcher.

The bullpen responded with seven-straight scoreless frames to finish as the Tigers had no answer for the combination of Cannon Chadwick, Evan Lee, and Jake Reindl.

Gates finished the game just 1-for-5 with two RBIs, but had the all-important homer that tied the game at 3-3.

Luke Bonfield and Eric Cole each turned in two-hit days. It’s the second multi-hit performance for Bonfield in the series and ninth for Cole this season.

Chadwick picked up the win for the Razorbacks after throwing 4.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts.

It’s his longest outing of his career and his fourth win of the season. Sophomore Jake Reindl picked up the three-inning save, his first of his career.

Reindl shut the door in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, striking out a career-high six batters and only allowed three baserunners.

In four of his last seven outings, the sophomore has racked up four or more strikeouts and has only given up one earned run in five conference appearances.

Moments That Mattered

Auburn chased Stephan in the middle of the second inning after jumping out to a 3-0 lead. Stephan battled through the first on 21 pitches and then reached 50 pitches before being pulled, tying for his shortest start of the year.

But, the Hogs swung their way back in it in the third when Bonfield skied a deep fly ball to centerfield for the sacrifice fly to score Jake Arledge, his 38th RBI of the year.

In the next at-bat, Gates mashed a two-run homer over the right field wall, tying the game at 3-3. For Gates, it was his third home run of the year and Arkansas’ first long ball of the series.

With the game tied and Stephan already taken out of the game, the Razorbacks needed strong innings out of their bullpen, and that started with Cannon Chadwick. The senior entered the game in the middle of the second inning and threw over four scoreless innings, his longest outing of his career.

He ran into trouble though in the sixth after hitting three batters to load the bases, but corralled two outs in the process. That’s when Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn decided to go to the bullpen and bring in the freshman Evan Lee. Lee faced Auburn’s lead-off batter Jonah Todd and got him to strike out swinging on four pitches, leaving the bases loaded and killing the Auburn rally.

Arkansas took its first lead of the series in the sixth by taking advantage of some control issues from Auburn pitcher Andrew Mitchell. The hurler walked the first three batters faced, giving Dominic Fletcher the opportunity to get a sacrifice fly. Fletcher did the job by sending a ball deep to right field, scoring Grant Koch and giving the Hogs the 4-3 lead. It was Fletcher’s only RBI of the game and the Hogs never lost the lead for the remainder of the game.

Lee only faced one batter in the seventh before Arkansas went to the bullpen again, bringing in Reindl. Reindl was masterful for the final three innings, striking out a career-high six and allowing only three baserunners the rest of the way.

Razorback Quotables

“This team has a lot of good chemistry and it’s genuine. They believed we could win and just kept fighting. Before you know it, it’s tied up. It just says that we’re pretty tough minded and they’ll fight to the end.” — Van Horn after his team’s bounce-back win

“The bullpen just mixed and matched today. When we brought (Evan) Lee in to face the lefty, we said ‘we need to find something out about him on the mound.’ We’ve been telling him this is his role and he came in and did the job.” — Van Horn on Evan Lee getting a key strikeout in the sixth

“Obviously, it was the biggest swing of the game. I thought Jake Arledge started that inning off and had a great at-bat. He took a full count, fouled off a pitch or two and got the walk. We got the sacrifice fly and then the big two-run homer. We definitely felt like the momentum was on our side of the diamond after that.” — Van Horn on Jared Gates’ game-tying home run

Up Next

Arkansas and Auburn will play the rubber match of this three-game series on Sunday at Plainsman Park. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. and will be televised on the SEC Network.

Phil Elson will also be calling the game on the radio for the Razorback Sports Network.

Razorbacks set new 4×100 record at ‘McDonnell’ on Saturday

• John McDonnell Results

FAYETTEVILLE — Taking on cold conditions that featured a light mist throughout the day, Arkansas turned in a strong day on its home track at the John McDonnell Invitation Saturday, highlighted by a record-breaking performance in the 4-x-100 meter relay.

Record-Breaking Performance
The 4-x-100 meter squad of Daina Harper, Payton Stumbaugh, Taliyah Brooks and Kiara Parker were first on the track and got things started in a big way by setting a new program and meet record despite the conditions with a time of 43.75. That mark broke the school record of 43.84 set by the 2004 squad that included eight-time Olympic medalist Veronica Campbell-Brown and Olympic performer LaShauntea Moore. The 43.75 is currently good for eighth-best in the nation and third in the NCAA West Region.

What A Day
The anchor of Arkansas’ record-breaking 4-x-100 relay squad, sophomore Kiara Parker turned in a big day with wins in the 100 and 200-meter races. Parker posted a 100-meter time of the day at 11.32, good for ninth-best in the NCAA West Region. Parker has won the 100 in each of the three outdoor meets so far this season and has improved her time each time. Just over an hour later, Parker took the track in the 200 and produced a time of 23.39, which is currently firmly inside the NCAA West Region top 40.

Stumbaugh Sets Season-Best
Another member of the 4-x-100 squad, junior Payton Stumbaugh set a season-best with a time of 13.12 in the 100-meter hurdles. Stumbaugh’s time is currently tied for 11th nationally and sixth in the NCAA West Region.

Birch Makes Big Move
Entering the weekend 81st nationally in the 400-meter hurdles, sophomore Damajahnee Birch used a time of 57.79 to move up over 60 spots. Birch’s time was 2.30 seconds faster than her first run of the year in the 400 hurdles just two weeks ago at the Baylor Invitational. She now ranks 16th nationally and sixth in the NCAA West Region.

Notables

• Sophomore Tori Weeks won the pole vault for the first time in her outdoor career.
• Freshman Jada Baylark worked her way into the top 40 of the NCAA West Region in the 200 meters (11.54).
• Arkansas had five of the top six finishers in the 200 meters.
• Sophomore Ceara Watson was victorious in the 800 meters.
• Sophomore Sydney Brown and freshman Maddy Reed each set new personal bests in the 1,500 meters to finishing second and third, respectively, behind five-time NCAA champ Dominique Scott.
