Why Hunter Osborne has become a leader on Arkansas’ defensive line

Hunter Osborne showed up in Fayetteville in January and didn’t say much at first.

He wanted his work on the field to do the talking. By the time fall camp opened this week that quiet approach had turned into something else entirely.

Coaches and teammates now point to him as one of the clearest leadership voices on the Arkansas defense.

The 6-foot-4, 313-pound defensive tackle is entering his fourth college season and his path here wasn’t simple.

He spent two years at Alabama before transferring to Virginia last season and now he’s settled in with the Hogs.

At Alabama he only saw the field in four games and picked up three tackles.

Virginia gave him a real shot and he made the most of it, playing in all 14 games with 15 tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack while helping the Cavaliers reach the ACC Championship game.

Arkansas defensive coordinator Ron Roberts said Osborne was exactly what the staff had in mind when they went shopping in the transfer portal.

Roberts wasn’t just looking for talent. He wanted players who loved the game and had the football IQ to match it. He called Osborne “the epitome of that” following Wednesday’s practice.

Osborne found his voice this spring

Osborne didn’t walk in trying to be the loudest guy in the room. He said he wanted his work to speak first before he started talking.

That mindset carried him through winter workouts and into spring ball where his role on the field grew alongside his voice off it.

By the time spring wrapped up Osborne felt comfortable stepping up more. He said the chance to speak up and combine that with his playmaking ability just felt like the right moment.

He added the leadership role wasn’t something he chased. It came naturally once his teammates started leaning on him for encouragement and honest feedback.

Mentoring a young Arkansas riser

Part of that leadership shows up in the little moments away from the field.

Osborne has been paired with true freshman Danny Beale III through a buddy system every defensive lineman goes through with a younger teammate.

Beale is an in-state product out of Cross County and he’s already turning heads early in camp.

Osborne said Beale never stops asking questions whether it’s to him or to the coaching staff.

He recalled Beale texting him about the install as late as 9 p.m. the night before practice just to make sure he had it right.

That kind of drive is exactly why Osborne believes the freshman can help the team sooner than people might expect.

Osborne’s message to Beale has been simple. Stay patient and don’t let the pressure of being young weigh too heavy.

He said the process takes time and reminded Beale to stay grounded rather than get overwhelmed by everything happening around him during his first camp.

Fall camp continues Thursday with Day 2 in Fayetteville. Arkansas opens its season in about a month when it hosts North Alabama with kickoff set for 3:15 p.m. on SEC Network.
