Razorbackss’ run game vanishes in really ugly 43-10 loss at Utah

Arkansas left Salt Lake City with more questions than it arrived with.

The Razorbacks fell 43-10 to No. 20 Utah at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday night, and the loss exposed problems on both sides of the ball.

Ryan Silverfield’s team dropped to 1-1 on the season.

Kickoff came at 9:30 p.m. central, marking the latest kickoff time in Arkansas football history, and the Hogs looked out of sync for most of it.

Arkansas actually struck first. The offense chewed up more than seven minutes on 14 plays before Max Gilbert capped it with a 29-yard field goal, giving the Razorbacks a brief 3-0 lead.

That was the high point of the night.

Everything that followed came harder for the Hogs, and the offense in particular never found any rhythm.

Jackson struggled before Hill gave Hogs a spark

Quarterback KJ Jackson had a rough outing under center.

He completed just 14 of 34 passes for 139 yards and threw an interception on a screen pass that Utah turned into points.

Jackson also led Arkansas in rushing, which said plenty about the state of the run game. He carried the ball seven times for 34 yards.

Backup AJ Hill entered in the fourth quarter and gave Arkansas its only real offensive success of the night.

Hill went 8 of 14 for 105 yards and moved the chains on two separate fourth-down plays during a 75-yard touchdown march.

Arkansas’s lone touchdown came when a deflected pass ended up in the arms of Ismael Cisse in the end zone.

Hill did get sacked twice for a combined 23 yards on the final two plays, but he didn’t turn the ball over.

The run game and defense both fell short

Arkansas’s ground attack never got going all night.

The Razorbacks finished with just 61 rushing yards on 28 carries against a Utah front that controlled the line of scrimmage.

The defense had one bright spot early. Christian Harrison came down with an interception in the second quarter after Quincy Rhodes Jr. got a hand on Dampier’s arm during the throw, giving Arkansas its first pick of the season.

The Hogs couldn’t turn that into points, though.

A penalty backed up the ensuing drive, and Jackson threw his own interception right back to Utah on a screen pass.

Utah cashed in quickly, and the Razorbacks spent the rest of the half chasing the score.

Bradley Shaw led the Arkansas defense with nine tackles, but the unit gave up 43 points and couldn’t slow Utah’s offense down for long stretches.

Penalties and rough second half piled on

Arkansas was flagged seven times for 56 yards, adding to a night already full of setbacks.

Utah built a 29-3 halftime lead by finding the end zone on every possession it had before the break, and the second half didn’t offer much of a turnaround for the Hogs.

Arkansas trailed 36-3 early in the third quarter and 43-3 by the midway point of the fourth before Hill’s touchdown drive made the final score 43-10.

The Razorbacks managed only 157 total yards through the first half, a number that reflected how little the offense could sustain against Utah’s defense.

Arkansas hasn’t beaten an FBS opponent since a 39-26 win over Texas Tech in the 2024 Liberty Bowl, and Saturday’s loss did nothing to end that stretch.

Silverfield’s team is now 1-1 through two games in his tenure, with a much tougher test looming.

What’s next for Arkansas

The schedule doesn’t get any easier for the Razorbacks.

Arkansas hosts No. 2 Georgia next Saturday at 11 a.m. on ABC, a game that will offer an immediate measuring stick after the lopsided road loss.

How Jackson and the offensive line respond this week could shape the outlook for the rest of the non-conference slate.
