Fans were nervous when Arkansas fell behind the New Jersey Institute of Technology on Friday afternoon but Christian Franklin’s diving catch jump-started a 13-8 win.

“He made made an incredible play,” Dave Van Horn said later. “He was stretched out as far as he could go.”

As so often happens in baseball, Franklin came up to bat shortly after that and hammered a homer and the Razorbacks proceeded to have a parade around the diamond the rest of the way.

“Bottom line, this time of year, find a way to win and hopefully we’ll do a little better tomorrow,” Van Horn said.

Now they have to get past a Nebraska team that downed Northeastern, who was eliminated by NJIT on Saturday afternoon.

Van Horn after Hogs’ sluggish start, then coming back again for win

It was nothing new for Arkansas to get down early and Dave Van Horn said later it could have been worse without Christian Franklin’s big catch.

Postseason baseball is finally back at Baum-Walker Stadium and it’s probably going to be the place to be in Fayetteville this weekend.

No. 1 Arkansas, hosting a regional for the fourth consecutive postseason and for the ninth time overall, embarks on its journey to the College World Series against the New Jersey Institute of Technology at 2 p.m.

And expectations among most of the Razorback fans is this regional is almost taking it for granted.

Not Dave Van Horn.

“If we play well we have a chance to win,” he said earlier this week. “If the games don’t go our way, they don’t go our way, but our guys will get after it and give you everything they’ve got.”

He hasn’t seen anything different with the players leading up to the regional.

“I don’t feel like they feel any pressure,” Van Horn said. “I don’t talk to them about it. I don’t want to ask them. They don’t need it. I see guys bouncing around and acting exactly like they acted three months ago and two months ago.”

The pregame show with Tye Richardson at Walk-On’s in Fort Smith starts at 1 p.m. leading up to the Razorback pregame with Phil Elson and Bubba Carpenter at 1:30.

Death, Taxes, Hogs are No. 1

Arkansas remained the unanimous No. 1 team in college baseball for Week 16 of the season, leading all six major polls released ahead of the NCAA Tournament.

Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, D1Baseball, NCBWA, Perfect Game and USA Today each kept the Razorbacks atop their respective rankings for the seventh straight week.

It is the 10th time this season that Arkansas is the undisputed No. 1 team in the nation as well as the 14th consecutive week that the Hogs maintain the top spot in at least one of the six polls.

The Razorbacks have ranked No. 1 in Baseball America’s top-25 poll for 14 weeks in a row, the publication’s longest such streak since 1998 Stanford topped the rankings for the first 15 weeks of the season.

Davis reportedly going to LSU leaving Hogs in awkward spot

According to various media reports, Arkansas offensive line coach Brad Davis is going to LSU and Sam Pittman finds himself in an awkward position.

It may have been something Pittman had in the back of his mind for awhile, though.

Trey Biddy at HawgSports.com reported Thursday afternoon that sources were telling him tight ends coach Cody Kennedy was going to take over the offensive line.

Davis was the first assistant Sam Pittman brought to Fayetteville when he was hired by the Razorbacks following the 2019 season and the offensive line was considered to be one of the team’s strong points with an experienced group returning.

LSU fired offensive line coach James Cregg on Wednesday, who had been their offensive line coach the last three seasons and Davis is from the Baton Rouge area and that may have been the only job he would leave for at this time.

In the world of the revolving door of assistant coaches it’s not surprising that a change would happen, but the timing of both Cregg’s firing and Davis leaving the Hogs at this particular time is unusual.

Pittman may have had an idea something like this was possible when he hired Kennedy as the tight ends coach. Kennedy had been a graduate assistant for Pittman at Georgia and coached the line at Tulane.

It’s a good bet, though, Pittman didn’t expect it to happen at this time of the year with the first on-campus recruiting visits in over a year starting this week.

Davis was being paid $650,000 a year and will have to pay the UA $97,500 to leave. LSU will probably pick up that tab. It’s the way things are done in big-time college sports these days.
