Hogs extend offer to Greenwood eighth-grade quarterback

It’s still a little unusual, but Arkansas extended an offer to the youngest player they have ever tried to get to Fayetteville.

Kane Archer of Greenwood, a Class of 2026 prospect, received the offer just a couple of days after attending the Razorbacks’ win over Texas on Saturday night.

Archer’s social media showed some of his visit to Fayetteville over the weekend.

Archer is the starting quarterback on Thursday nights for the Greenwood ninth-grade team and Tuesdays with his eighth-grade teammates.

Pittman updates Morgan’s injury status plus leadership with captains

Grant Morgan hasn’t played a full game this year but still picked up Bednarik weekly award this week after Texas game.

Morgan had 13 tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks against the Longhorns. It was his seventh-career double digit tackle game. The Greenwood native posted those numbers playing in 44 snaps and was part of a defense that held the Longhorns to just 3.6 yards per carry.

The linebacker earned the award for the second time in his career, after recording 19 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack and returning an interception for a touchdown last year against Ole Miss.

He was also injured in the game against Texas. After sitting out a big part of the season opener against Rice on a targeting call, he was injured in the second half Saturday night.

Morgan didn’t return to the game, but was later seen on the sidelines and was enjoying the win with the team after the game. Arkansas coach Sam Pittman didn’t see overly concerned and has listed him day-by-day for the moment.

“You know, he’s tough,” Pittman said at his Monday press conference. “I expect him to go out to practice today and do what he can do. He’s still a little bit day by day. We’ll know a little bit more about him, how he feels, at practice today, as soon as practice is over.”

He was at practice Monday afternoon.

There was a tie for the final captain spot this season giving the Hogs five. Rules only allow four players at midfield for the pregame coin toss.

Morgan didn’t agree with Pittman’s idea to have four of them go for the toss with one staying back.

“We’re not leaving one of our guys behind, so we’re going to have one go out and the four are going to stay together,” Pittman quoted Morgan as saying. “Thought it was pretty cool.”

This is the second time in Morgan’s career he has won the weekly Bednarik honor. He did so for the first time last season after recording 19 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack and returning an interception for a touchdown against Ole Miss.

Each week the Maxwell Football Club announces the Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week for the nation’s most outstanding defensive performance. Morgan was included on the award’s preseason watch list.

Game time, TV, set for Arkansas’ matchup with Aggies in Arlington

The 77th meeting between Arkansas and Texas A&M is on the big stage for the first time in awhile.

It was announced Monday morning the game will be at 2:30 p.m. at AT&T Stadium in Arlington and will be broadcast nationally on CBS.

The Hogs and Aggies have played every year since 2009, with it being a conference game since Texas A&M joined the SEC in 2012.

Arkansas has a 41-33-3 edge in the all-time series, but the Aggies have won each of the last nine matchups. Texas A&M picked up a 42-31 win at home against Arkansas in 2020.

The move to a national broadcast became realistic Saturday night when the Aggies managed to pull out a narrow road win late against Colorado while the Hogs throttled Texas.

A&M was ranked No. 7 in the national polls Sunday while Arkansas made its first appearance this year at No. 20.

Arkansas won each of the first three games against Texas A&M at this location in 2009-2011, but the Aggies have taken the last five starting in 2014.

A&M won in College Station in 2012 and the next year in Fayetteville.

To summarize all of that, the Hogs haven’t beaten the Aggies since they joined the SEC with the 2012 season, although they have been close, losing several times in overtime.
