Arkansas has earned right to have some luck like win over Bulldogs

0

Sam Pittman didn’t use the word “luck” after Arkansas’ 31-28 win over Mississippi State on Saturday.

He simply called it “fortunate.”

It was all of that and maybe a little more. In the end, though, the Razorbacks earned every bit of that fortunate win.

First of all, Bulldogs kicker Nolan McCord, bless his heart, missed three field goals. That includes a 40-yarder as time expired that would have tied the game and put it into overtime.

“I knew they were going to miss it,” Pittman said after the game.

He was kidding. He was just hoping.

“Oh, shoot,” he added. “I hate it for the kid and all of that, but I told them after the end of the game when there’s no time on the clock, all anybody cares about is who won. They completed three good balls there, went right down the middle.”

Now that’s what folks will be discussing … or should be.

Mississippi State quarterback Will Rogers shredded the Hogs’ secondary for 417 yards. The Bulldogs’ kicker ended nearly as many drives as Arkansas’ secondary.

Still, though, the Hogs pulled out a win, mainly because KJ Jefferson has developed into an SEC quarterback that can make plays when he needs to make them. Sometimes that includes throwing an incompletion on purpose.

He directed a 10-play, 75-yard drive that almost was de-railed on a fourth-and-1 on the Mississippi State 25. Jefferson rolled to his right and threw it into the ground but it didn’t matter because the Bulldogs were called for holding Treylon Burks.

“I kept saying to (Kendal) Briles on the headset ‘Get the first down. Get the first down,’” Pittman said. “Obviously, he had shut me off at that time because he was rolling out. I said get the first down. We’ve got two timeouts. Get the first down. Get the first down.

“He knows that I mean run the football. But  it changed big time. I saw the flag. I didn’t know if it was on them or us, but I sure was hoping.

“Somebody up top said they got a holding call. I figured at that point we’d have a pretty good chance to score.”

You’d assume he was referring to the coaches in the pressbox.

But considering the way things were going you have to at least wonder, right?

No, the Hogs earned the right to win the game … with or without luck.

In fact, Arkansas has earned the right to come out on top in a game like that.

Plenty have gone the other way.

Arkansas gets back into SEC play this week when Mississippi State, one of the hottest teams in the league, comes to Fayetteville for a 3 p.m. game.

• With four games left to play, Arkansas enters Saturday afternoon’s game one win away from bowl eligibility. The Razorbacks are seeking their first six-win campaign since 2016 when Arkansas won seven regular-season games and punched its ticket to the 2016 Belk Bowl in Charlotte, N.C.

• The Hogs are 4-1 in home games this season, including 3-1 in contests played at Razorback Stadium. Arkansas last won five home games in 2015 and most recently won four games in Fayetteville in 2016.

• QB KJ Jefferson is one of the best at his position in all of college football. The Razorback signal-caller has thrown for 1,657 yards and 15 touchdowns while gaining 419 yards on the ground with five touchdowns. Jefferson is one of two SEC quarterbacks — and one of seven in the FBS — with 1,600+ passing yards and 400+ rushing yards on the year.

• RB Trelon Smith has run for a team-leading 459 yards and four scores through eight games this season. The speedster has scored nine rushing touchdowns in his last 13 games, averaging 70.6 rushing yards per game in that span. Powered by Smith’s legs, the Razorbacks boast the second- best rushing offense in the SEC and the fourth-best rushing attack in the country, averaging 249.0 yards per game.

• WR Treylon Burks leads Arkansas with 42 catches for 717 yards and seven touchdowns this season, hauling in 36.2 percent of the Razorbacks’ total completed passes (116). Burks currently ranks first among all SEC pass catchers in receiving yards (717) and receiving yards per game (89.6). The Warren native extended his streak of consecutive games with a reception to 28 against UAPB, becoming the ninth player in school history to eclipse 2,000 career receiving yards in the team’s lopsided win.

PETE’S PICKS: After several twists, turns, Hogs win big Saturday

0

Good ole Mississippi… State.

If you have never been to our bordering neighbor you have definitely been missing out.

The historic towns, lovely people, and mayflies so big and plentiful they turn auto detailers into millionaires are just some of the “cannot miss” pleasantries you will encounter if you ever do decide to make the journey.

For clarity, there is absolutely no exaggeration in my last statement whereas you and your motorized vehicle of choice literally CANNOT MISS the mayflies.

Yet I must add it is truly a beautiful state this Mississippi, slightly down and to the right of us.

Right now the appealing qualities of anywhere are irrelevant though as it is the Mississippi State Bulldogs who will be making a trip to Fayetteville to face the Arkansas Razorbacks.

“But what about the importance of this game? Is there any? Are not both pretty much longshots to win even the SEC West title.”

Good questions. Let me answer those with an inquiry of my own.

I mention again there are without a doubt countless great people from the Magnolia State, some of whom I consider close friends and wonderful acquaintances, yet what is it about SEC football which will make us despise one another for one week out of the year (or two if it is our team ends up with a notch in the ‘Loss’ column)?

I will gladly tell you. Football is king in the south.

Yes, God is God and family is family, but third in line is always the pride and respect we feel are earned when our team is triumphant upon the green turf.

We as fans and programs do not like to lose, and we do not enjoy a win tainted with any possible excuses coming from the losing side (unless your Auburn then you will take a win any way you can get it).

It is always and in all things us versus them, and even holiday dinners take a backseat to any and all pigskin contentions.

Let us not cheapen what we do not like to admit and that is even though it is not a traditional rivalry, many impacts upon the conference standings and bowl representatives have been made when Arkansas and Mississippi State face off in the SEC West.

So, yes, there is somewhat of a quiet rivalry between the Razorbacks and the Bulldogs from Starkville, and while no trophy travels nor sits in a display case, losing to one another is not an option for the fans, the players, and the coaching staffs.

Both programs have newer versions of the latter.

In the freshman SEC campaigns for both coaches, Sam Pittman got the winning mark against Mike Leach in what some think was the first of what will be many historic games between the two.

That, however, was 2020, and 2021 finds Leach somehow or another having forgotten the advice he gave Eric Taylor and thus the head Bulldog seems to have lost his inner pirate.

The Bulldogs do have some momentum coming off an upset of then No. 12 Kentucky while the Hogs have basically come off back-to-back bye weeks with the latter actually having been a week off preceded by an easy win over UAPB.

Sometimes a little downtime is just what the doctor has ordered.

Other times it may lull you into a soft sense of security before returning to discover your brain fails to focus early and you cannot quite remember exactly what it was you were doing right before you left.

Either way, friendships, business partnerships, and bragging rights may be on the line this Saturday as Mississippi State comes into Razorback Stadium, and we all know how important it is to not lose to both Mississippi schools in the same season.

Oh, and there is one other thing of importance in this game. A win by Arkansas makes them bowl eligible, and it seems like forever since we have felt this hope and luxury this early in a season.

Final Thoughts:

Happy Anniversary to Meleah and Steven Detherage who will be celebrating by attending the game this weekend! They deserve a ‘W’, especially after the assistance and patience Meleah exhibited last week.

Razorbacks fans, let’s be friendly to our neighbors from visiting from the southeast. After all, if it weren’t for Mississippi … well, you know the cliché.

Plus they hate the pretty boys from Oxford even more than we do.

Hey, if you are not going to use your tickets for this weekend, please GIVE THE DAMN THINGS AWAY!!!

TRIVIA QUESTION: What are the two highest combined point totals in Mississippi State vs Arkansas football history?

Mississippi State is proof you can be ranked high, play terribly, and work your way back into the Top 25 all in the same season. That or you can be the Duke basketball team and simply be ranked no matter how pathetic you are.

Speaking of basketball, Eric Musselman and his Razorbacks welcome Mercer into Bud Walton Arena on Tuesday night. Let’s rock the Bud! I kind of promised Coach Muss we would.

Arkansas’s defense has to do better than it has in recent games. Seriously, this is not a joke.

I will repeat: If you have not noticed what former Arkansas coaches Jeff Traylor and Barry Lunney, Jr. are doing at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) you had better start.

If you have not heeded my advice, perhaps the Roadrunners catapulting to being ranked 16th in the country will get your attention.

TRIVIA ANSWER: In 2015 State beat Arkansas 51 – 50 for a total of 101 points. The subsequent year, the Hogs defeated the Bulldogs 58–42 for a 100-point sum.

The Razorbacks will need to play almost perfect on defense to live up to my upcoming optimistic prediction.

Arkansas makes itself bowl eligible at home, and this one is not as close as many think.

Arkansas, 41-20.

Be certain to listen to the game Saturday at 3:00 P.M. via HitThatLine.com and on the air at ESPN Arkansas 95.3 in the River Valley, 96.3 in Hot Springs, and 104.3 in Harrison-Mountain Home.

SEC Picks for Week 10

Andy had an opportunity to make a move on my slowly growing lead, but he played strategy and opted to pick against his instinct. Now he may end up ruing the day…

Missouri at (1) Georgia: I have internal debate on whether or not I like Missouri Head Coach Eliah Drinkwitz. On one hand, he has called the state of Arkansas home since his first birthday. On the other, he seems to possess an egotistical and overconfident aura akin to former LSU (and Arkansas State) Basketball Head Coach John Brady. None of this really matters in my prediction; I  almost feel bad for the guy as his Tigers head into Athens to face the top-ranked Bulldogs. Texas A&M already pulled off the mandatory yearly major upset of the SEC for 2021, hence Mizzou stands no chance. Georgia by 27.

Liberty at (16) Ole Miss: You immediately have to wonder if Liberty Head Coach Hugh Freeze’s return to Oxford will be ice cold. Do the Ole Miss faithful have any guile towards the coach who had their program pointed towards the Promised Land before a few investigations and loose lips discovered some recruiting violations and paid players? Many football fans seem to forget that part. What they do remember is it was all topped off by our beloved Houston Nutt and his legal team requesting and utilizing the Freedom of Information Act to support their defamation lawsuit against the university. Unfortunately for Freeze (who also coached at Arkansas State), this FOIA led to some not so well-placed calls to an escort service by the Rebels head coach to a popular escort service. This directed an exile for Freeze out of Oxford and later a successful hire and far improved football program for Liberty. This may actually be a good game. Oh, Ole Miss and Lane Kiffin will be there as well.  Rebels by 14.

(13) Auburn at (14) Texas A&M – GAME OF THE WEEK: One of these two teams has to lose this week and I almost love it. I used to hold a soft spot in the deep echoes of my heart for Auburn, but their past two coaching hires seem off-putting. Auburn is better overall, but the Aggies have the ability to play at a higher level when they are running smoothly. This may be the best matchup in the country this weekend, and A&M walks away with a victory. Aggies by 10.

 (17) Mississippi State at Arkansas: The Razorbacks will give the Detharage family an enjoyable gift and memory. Arkansas by 21.

LSU at (2) Alabama: This used to be a game of the week every single time these two squared off on the gridiron. Unfortunately, all things change, and LSU’s focus should be on rebuilding for the future, but under whose leadership? Do Coach O care enough at this point? Bama by 31.

Tennessee at (18) Kentucky: My gosh how times have changed. Both of these programs are on trajectories completely opposite from their storied successes and the lack thereof. Kentucky is probably a little underrated, and they do have the home field advantage against a struggling Rocky Top team. Wildcats by 22.

Florida at South Carolina: Five dollars says the Gators will finally win and slightly turn down the burners on Dan Mullen’s steadily warming hot seat. Gators by 24.

Check in during the game for all the highlights updates from Saturday’s contest.

Hey, let me give a shout-out to Avery from TCU who was integral to my recovery during my recent illness.

Thank you very much, young lady for helping to put my mind at ease during such a trying time. Please extend to all members of the Mercy staff my appreciation. You all have bright futures.

ANDY’S PICKS: Can Hogs get back on hot streak in November?

0

Arkansas has been off for so long it was easy to feel like the season was cancelled and we just hadn’t gotten the memo yet.

That’s what happens when you have UAPB followed by an open date.

Now Mississippi State comes to town as one of the hottest teams in the SEC. They are ranked No. 17 in the first College Football Playoff rankings and nobody is exactly sure why.

Now the Razorbacks are a 4.5-point favorite Saturday afternoon at Razorback Stadium.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Right now the money is coming down that KJ Jefferson and Treylon Burks plus running back Dominique Johnson and others will be able to score more points than Mike Leach’s Air Raid offense with a quarterback named Will Rogers that was 36-of-39 passing last week and completely befuddled Kentucky.

Can Hogs’ defensive coordinator Barry Odom pull another rabbit out of his bag of schemes?

Now he’s having to do it against Leach, who has modified his Air Raid offense to more of an Air Control type of attack. They are running the ball by throwing it for a 4-yard completion and picking up one first down after another.

Both teams want to control the time of possession. The best defense can be the offense methodically eating up first downs and keeping a high-scoring offense on the other sideline.

At the end of the day, though, it usually comes down to who has the best players healthy when you roll into November. Don’t talk about that bye week break because that’s not enough time to fully recover from an emotional September and a physical October.

Arkansas — without it’s best player — will face a Mississippi State offense that loves to find a weakness somewhere and adapt to take advantage of that.

You can bet this game is going to come down to some scheming on both sides of the ball.

Until Odom shows he can’t do it, I’m going to ride with the Hogs for another week. Hogs 35, Mississippi State 20

I have no idea if Pete is still functioning this week after coming out of the hospital to make his lame picks last week. No, seriously, thankfully he’s been making improvements and there was a return policy on the suit I had bought “just in case.”

Missouri at Georgia (-39.5): This is one of those November matchups where you keep expecting the top-ranked Bulldogs to trip somewhere along the way but it won’t be against the Tigers this year. Georgia 51, Missouri 3

Liberty at Ole Miss (-9.5): Hugh Freeze comes back to where he first popped up on the national radar, then proceeded to make some bad decisions (never learning about burner phones) and getting fired after winning a Sugar Bowl. The Rebels are looking to get last week’s collapse against Auburn out of their system. Ole Miss 45, Liberty 21

Auburn at Texas A&M (-4.5): After a few stumbles along the way, two teams that expected to be battling for the second spot in the SEC West find themselves in November with a winner-take-all to reach that spot. There’s not a lot of logic to this but I think the Football Gods want the Iron Bowl to mean something this year. Auburn 31, Texas A&M 21

LSU at Alabama (-28.5): At least Ed Orgeron and the Tigers will always have 2019 to remember fondly. This may not be a particularly pleasant trip to Tuscaloosa and you wonder if the LSU brass will let Ed keep hanging around if they stink it up again. Alabama 49, LSU 14

Tennessee (-1) at Kentucky: What happened to the Wildcats? Basketball exhibition games started and the season is just around the corner. Nobody really cares, to tell you the truth. The Vols may have enough offense to out-score them in Lexington. Tennessee 28, Kentucky 24

Florida (-18) at South Carolina: Dan Mullen is getting a little snarky about some reporters’ questions and the Gators are reeling into November. Sounds about right for them to start turning it around and the Gamecocks probably can’t do a whole lot to stop it from happening. Florida 35, South Carolina 14

Trey Wade: How right knee was injured, process of getting back on floor

Injured his knee in practice plus how he wanted to play football until relative’s injuries made him go with basketball.
