Notae’s free throw gives Hogs narrow win over LSU

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — JD Notae sank two free throws with eight seconds left and the Razorbacks came up with a big stop on the ensuing possession to give #14/15 Arkansas a 77-76 victory over LSU Wednesday night at Bud Walton Arena.

LSU led by four with 1:47 left after an old-fashion, 3-point play by Tari Eason, who led the Tigers with 24 points. Au’Diese Toney answered with a 4-0 run of his own – two free throws and a layup off a Notae assist – to tie the game at 74 with 1:13. Xavier Pinson put LSU back up two, 76-74, with a layup.

Kamani Johnson, playing for the fouled-out Jaylin Williams, got an offensive rebound with 46 seconds to go. On the play, the officials reviewed the play and LSU was called for a flagrant one foul for grabbing Johnson on the rebound. Johnson made 1-of-2 free throws to get the Hogs to within one (76-75).

Arkansas could not capitalize after keeping the ball after the flagrant foul as JD Notae slipped and turned the ball over. LSU had two shots, a 3-pointer and a layup off an offensive rebound, but came up empty each time. Notae grabbed the rebound with 12 seconds left and pushed the ball up the floor. He was fouled with eight seconds left and calmly sank both free throws.

LSU had one final chance and the Razorback defense forced a tough layup by Pinson which came up short. Stanley Umude grabbed the rebound to secure the win.

Umude led the Razorbacks with 23 points. Williams, who fouled out attempting to take his fourth charge of the game with 4:27 left, recorded his sixth straight double-double (and 12th of the season) with 19 points and 10 rebounds while adding two steals and a blocked shot. Toney finished with 18 points (6-of-9 FG and 6-of-6 FT). Notae, who only scored three first-half points and was just 3-of-12 shooting, had 12 points, including a 3-pointer with 10:33 left and making 4-of-4 at the line inside the final five minutes. Notae added seven rebounds and five assists.

Darius Days had 19 points for the Tigers and Pinson, who was 5-of-21 from the field (0-of-7 from 3-point range), had 12 points.

While LSU dominated the backboards, 43-35, Arkansas won the game at the free throw line. The Hogs were 24-of-28 while the Tigers were 18-of-19.

Arkansas concludes the regular season at #13 Tennessee on Saturday (Mar. 5). Tipoff is set for 11 am (CT) and the game will be televised on ESPN.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — When Arkansas beat LSU the first time in January it started the hot winning streak they are on.

Winning 13 of the last 14 games is all of that. But it means absolutely nothing tonight at 8 p.m. in Bud Walton Arena.

“We’re two different teams now this time around,” Razorbacks coach Eric Musselman said earlier this week. “It’s hard to beat a team twice. It really is. When they’ve been fully healthy, they’ve won a lot of games.

“Nobody wants to play LSU in the Tournament, I can promise you that.”

The game will start at 8 p.m. on ESPN2 with Tom Hart and Jimmy Dykes.

• Jaylin Williams had a double-double (11 pts & 13 rebs) and made two key plays down the stretch to lead Arkansas to a 65-58 win over #12 LSU. The Hogs were down 8 wit 9:01 left, put out-scored the Tigers 17-2 to close the game and get the win. Arkansas was without head coach Eric Musselman, who had shoulder surgery on Jan. 13, and assistant coach Keith Smart filled in. The Razorbacks were also led by JD Notae, who had a game-high 19 points with four assists and was +18, the only Razorback in double digits. LSU took its largest lead, 56-48, with a fastbreak dunk with 9:01 left. Arkansas called a timeout and responded with a 10-0 run to lead by two (58-56) at the 3:31 mark. LSU tied the game on another dunk from Alex Fudge with 2:16 remaining. Undaunted, Williams sank a 3-pointer, and, on the ensuing possession, Williams took his fourth charge of the game. Then, still up three with 22 seconds left, Notae missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Stanley Umude was there for the offensive rebound and putback for a five-point cushion. Au’Diese Toney, who finished with 12 points, then sealed the win with two free throws with 11 ticks on the clock.

• Jaylin Williams has 166 rebounds in SEC games to rank 2nd on the school’s all-time list (2 shy of record). Bobby Portis is 1st for rebounds in SEC games at 168 (2015). Neighbors, Ramirez on SEC Tournament plus what she’s meant to Hogs

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Three Razorbacks were honored by the Southeastern Conference today, as Amber Ramirez, Samara Spencer and Jersey Wolfenbarger all picked up their first postseason honors from the league office.

Ramirez was named Second Team All-SEC, Samara Spencer was named the league’s freshman of the year, and Wolfenbarger was named to the All-Freshman team.

Ramirez put together an excellent final season, earning second team honors after deciding to run it back at Arkansas.

She has been on an absolute tear since the calendar turned to 2022, finishing with an average 18.9 points per game, the fourth-highest mark in the league.

Ramirez also led the league in three-point makes during conference play (52) and finished second in three-point percentage (44.8).

Ramirez did more than score though, and her presence on the defensive glass was a big reason for the Hogs’ success this season with a younger team.

She finished seventh in the league in defensive rebounds per game (5.3) during conference games, tops in the league among players under six feet tall.

Ramirez put several great performances to the hardwood during her final season on the Hill, including a 25-point outburst in Arkansas’ win over then-No. 12 LSU, a 25-point nine-rebound outing in Arkansas’ massive road win at Mizzou, and a 30-point performance against Auburn, which was capped by a game-winning floater with 0.3 seconds left to play.

Spencer, meanwhile, became the Hogs’ first freshman of the year honoree since C’eira Ricketts, who won the award all the way back in 2009.

In a class loaded with five-star players and McDonald’s All-Americans, Spencer stood out from the jump, and finished the season averaging 12.1 points per game, good for third on the team, and 3.2 assists per game, best on the squad.

Though she had a slow start to SEC play, Spencer came alive following the Hogs’ loss to No. 1 South Carolina.

Since January 20 on, Spencer averaged 16.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game, all while shooting 45 percent from the field. Because of that, Spencer won the SEC’s freshman of the week award four times, the second-most in a single season ever by a Hog.

In SEC play, the Fort Lauderdale, Florida native finished 20th in the league in scoring average (13.5 PPG) and 12th in the league in assists per game (3.5).

There were several memorable moments for Spencer this season, including a 19-point game against Mississippi State in Bud Walton Arena, a 22-point, seven-rebound, six-assist showing at Mizzou, and a 20-point performance against then-No. 12 LSU.

A member of the SEC’s 2022 all-freshman team, Jersey Wolfenbarger came on strong to close out her first regular season on the Hill.

Wolfenbarger finished the season averaging 8.1 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Wolfenbarger did most of her damage playing out of position, as she was thrust into a starting role down low after Erynn Barnum went down against Cal on Dec. 5.

Since then, Wolfenbarger has started 19 games, averaging 8.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. As she got more comfortable down low, the numbers followed recording back-to-back double-doubles at Texas A&M (12 points, 10 rebounds) and at Missouri (12 points, 11 rebounds).

In February, she reached double figures in four of the Hogs’ eight games, while shooting 50 percent or better in four of those games.

Wolfenbarger finished the regular season strong, going for 13 points and six rebounds at Mississippi State.

She averaged 11.5 points and 8.0 rebounds against Missouri this season.
