Diamond Hogs pummel UALR after trailing by six

0

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The Diamond Hogs hit around three times Tuesday night at Baum-Walker Stadium, erasing a six-run deficit against the UALR Trojans and winding up with a 16-8 victory.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Mark Adamiak got shelled in the first inning, walking his first two hitters and surrendering three hits and four runs before head coach Dave Van Horn pulled him from the game. The skipper called on junior righty Miller Pleimann to end the frame, which he did with a strikeout.

Pleimann allowed an unearned run in the second inning, when senior center fielder Braydon Webb committed a two-base error on a routine single up the middle. The Trojans tagged him for a pair of two-out hits in the third, stretching the margin to six runs.

The Razorbacks put on a two-out hitting display of their own in the bottom half of the inning, including an RBI double by junior second baseman Robert Moore and an RBI single by graduate left fielder Chris Lanzilli.

After UALR first baseman Canyon McWilliams took Arkansas senior righty Kole Ramage deep to left field for a solo home run in the fifth, sophomore third baseman Cayden Wallace led off with a solo blast of his own, and the comeback was on. After a hit batter and a pair of walks with one out, senior shortstop Jalen Battles moved the line along with an RBI single, cutting the deficit to three runs. A fielder’s choice which resulted in no outs, a wild pitch and a single from freshman right fielder Drake Varnado later, the Razorbacks tied it.

The Hogs picked up right where they left off in the sixth, with Wallace reaching on an error to get things going. With runners on the corners, graduate catcher Michael Turner sliced a double into the left-center field gap, scoring two runs to give Arkansas a 9-7 lead. He scored on another RBI knock by Battles, and Varnado got credit for a sacrifice fly to shallow left field when Moore charged home, unbeknownst to the shortstop who fielded the ball.

Arkansas tacked on five more runs in the eighth, courtesy of a three-run blast by freshman designated hitter Kendall Diggs — the first of his career — and a two-run shot by Webb. Senior right-hander Zebulon Vermillion allowed a pair of doubles in the ninth, but that was it for the Trojans.

Barring inclement weather, the Razorbacks and Trojans will play again at 4 p.m. Wednesday. The contest will stream live on the SEC Network+.

Series History

Arkansas and Little Rock have met on the diamond just three times since 1960. The Razorbacks own a 2-1 series lead, with all three games having occurred at Baum-Walker Stadium.

The in-state opponents’ first clash came on April 2, 2019, when the Trojans shocked the Hogs in a 17-7 win. Last season’s pair of meetings went significantly better for the Razorbacks as Arkansas won both midweek showdowns.

Leading Off

• Arkansas moved up to No. 2 in D1Baseball’s latest top-25 poll, which was released on Monday morning. The Razorbacks were also ranked second nationally in the most recent NCBWA and USA Today Coaches polls.

• The Hogs went a perfect 6-0 against in-state opponents last season, including a pair of wins against both Little Rock and UAPB. Arkansas also defeated UCA and Arkansas State in midweek clashes during the 2021 campaign.

• Dave Van Horn earned his 300th SEC win on Sunday at Mizzou. Including his years at Nebraska, Northwestern State and Central Missouri State, the Head Hog has racked up 1,139 wins at four-year institutions, which is sixth most among all active DI head coaches.

• RHP Mark Adamiak will make his third career start for Arkansas on Tuesday, getting the ball in game one against Little Rock. The right-hander has a 2-0 record and a 2.08 ERA in 8 2/3 innings this season, striking out eight while allowing only two runs.

• Arkansas’ five-game week, beginning with Tuesday and Wednesday’s contests against Little Rock, is part of a six-game homestand. The Razorbacks host Mississippi State this weekend (April 1-3) in the third SEC series of the season before wrapping up their stay at home with a midweek battle against UCA on April 5.

Musselman lands another highly-touted recruit in Black

Arkansas added another five-star recruiting class to the best in program history with five-star point guard Anthony Black decided to call the Hogs.

Black made the announcement Monday evening at the PowerAds Jamfest in Chicago.

As a result, Arkansas coach Eric Musselman put another star on a class that is loaded with them.

“Coach Musselman has a sense of my goals and I feel he is going to help me strive to meet them as quick as I can,” Black said about his decision. “I feel Arkansas is the best place I can go to get pushed and tested the most.”

Black (6-7, 198 pounds) chose Arkansas over Gonzaga, Oklahoma State, Memphis, TCU and other programs. He also considered the NBA G-League.

And now, less than a week after the Razorbacks beat Gonzaga in the NCAA Tournament, the Hogs did it again, this time on the recruiting trail.

Black reached into a cooler and pulled out a red PowerAde with the Razorback logo taped to it.

“Just being able to trust the coaches and trust they have my best interest in mind while also winning a lot of game and having a lot of fun,” Walsh said. “The game plan thing really is to just come in and win and see how we can help each other get better and push each other to get better. They didn’t know, but they saw me and Nick and Jordan talking a bit, so they were kinda plotting.”

Black joins a talented group of recruits included Nick Smith, Jr., and Jordan Walsh for three of the Top 20 recruits in the country to gl along with Derrian Ford and Joseph Pinion.

Let the expectations start going up.
