Hogs’ open spring practice now closed due to weather, moved inside

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark – Fans who got up this morning hoping to make the drive to Fayetteville to take in the festivities surrounding a rather unusual spring game that’s not a spring game already, soon found out they would be saving their gas for other ventures.

With thunderstorms expected until 1 p.m. and rain to continue well after, Arkansas officials opted cancel all Hogfest activities and and moved this morning’s open practice sessions indoors.

After first announcing intentions of keeping the open practice in Reynolds Razorback Stadium and open to fans, an official announcement came down around 8:45 a.m. that the open practice would be moved indoors and closed to the public. However, Arkansas will keep its agreement with the SEC Network and make it possible for the practices to be aired live.

If all goes at planned, fans will be able to watch the open practice at 11 a.m. on the SEC Network+ and ESPN+.

Arkansas tops LSU again behind homers, lockdown pitching

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas supplied plenty of power Friday night at Baum-Walker Stadium, blasting three home runs en route to a 4-0 victory against LSU.

The win ensured a series victory for Arkansas as well, righting the ship after its first Southeastern Conference series loss since 2019 last week at Florida.

Arkansas freshman left-handed pitcher Hagen Smith and LSU righty Blake Money exchanged two scoreless frames to begin the game before junior left fielder Zack Gregory broke the pattern.

One night after being pinch hit for in the sixth inning, Gregory belted an opposite-field home run to lead off the bottom of the third. Later in the inning, graduate catcher Michael Turner made Money pay for a walk by sending another ball into the visitors’ bullpen, making it a 3-0 game.

Graduate right fielder Chris Lanzilli joined the longball festivities with a solo blast of his own with two outs in the fifth inning.

Both starters made it into the seventh, but Smith was the only one to make it through that inning. He bounced back from a tough outing last week, allowing just three baserunners — two hits and one walk — in his seven shutout frames to earn a win and a quality start, and adding seven strikeouts.

Senior right-hander Zebulon Vermillion recorded the first two outs in the eighth, and senior lefty Evan Taylor came on for the second consecutive day to strand three runners — two allowed by Vermillion and one of his own. He retired the Tigers in order in the ninth, sealing the shutout for the Hogs and earning his first save of the year.

The Razorbacks can sweep the Tigers when they square off one last time at 2 p.m. Saturday. Sophomore righty Jaxon Wiggins will get the start for Arkansas, and the game will stream live on the SEC Network+.

Hogs rally to beat LSU in series opener

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Fans at Baum-Walker Stadium erupted Thursday night when Arkansas’ Robert Moore ripped a 106-mph line drive past the glove of LSU second baseman Cade Doughty to break a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning.

The play produced two runs for the Razorbacks, and they went on to win the series opener, 5-4.

The Hogs opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, making the Tigers pay for a throwing error by third baseman Jacob Berry.

Sophomore third baseman and leadoff hitter Cayden Wallace singled to third, advanced to second on the errant throw and eventually scored on an RBI fielder’s choice by graduate catcher Michael Turner.

The Hogs doubled their lead in the third inning, cashing in on four walks by LSU starter Ma’Khail Hilliard, but they left the bases loaded.

Razorback senior right-hander Connor Noland had a no-hitter going through five innings, but a slew of two-out LSU hits put the Hogs in a hole.

After hitting the first batter, he struck out two Tigers before allowing four consecutive singles. He recorded a quality start, but he was in line for the loss after the LSU three-spot.

Senior lefty Evan Taylor struck out the side in the seventh, and he earned his third win of the year when Arkansas responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame.

Senior center fielder Braydon Webb leveled the score at three with a two-out infield single, as Wallace raced 180 feet to score from second base. Moore followed the tying run with his eventual game-winning two-run single.

The Tigers picked up an unearned run in the eight, stemming from a catcher’s interference call against graduate backstop Michael Turner.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Brady Tygart surrendered a pair of hits to cut the lead in half and load the bases before inducing an inning-ending double play to keep the lead intact. He worked a scoreless ninth, earning his fifth save of the season.

Arkansas and LSU will square off once again at 6 p.m. Friday.

Freshman lefty Hagen Smith will start for the Razorbacks, opposite righty Blake Money for the Tigers. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
