LIVE BLOG: Razorbacks close out 52-35 win at Brigham Young

PROVO, Utah — From the day BYU appeared on the Arkansas schedule, it felt like a trap game.

Now it is here and injuries have put the Razorbacks in a hole this afternoon in Provo, Utah, against a Cougars team that was ranked in the polls a week longer.

The Hogs also have a three-game losing streak going for the 10th time in the last 11 years and how they handle from a mental standpoint has been one of the biggest questions heading into this game.

Quarterback KJ Jefferson is back after missing the Mississippi State blowout last week and the Hogs are jockeying for a good bowl game since all three losses were in the league (no SEC Championship game) and now they step out of SEC play for a game in the mountains of Utah that has it’s own issues.

You can follow the flow of the game here at HitThatLine.com, watch on ESPN or listen on ESPN Arkansas radio 99.5 in Fayetteville, 95.3 in the River Valley, 96.3 in Hot Springs and 104.3 in Harrison-Mountain Home.

First Quarter

Arkansas’ defense has carried the load the first two possessions for the each team. The offense, meanwhile, has a Rocket Sanders’ fumble the Cougars got and Jefferson not looking particularly sharp early.

1Q 5:39: On BYU’s second possession, Cougars’ quarterback starts picking apart the Hogs’ secondary, particularly cornerback Dwight McGlothern, capping a 10-play, 82-yard drive with a 4-yard scoring pass to Rex Isaac and an unsportsmanlike call against McGlothern starts the offense at the 25. BYU 7, Hogs 0

1Q 2:37: Hogs answer with an eight-play, 75-yard drive primarily on the ground and Sanders capped it with a 15-yard scoring run. Hogs 7, BYU 7

1Q 1:11: Two straight pass interference calls set up BYU for a 21-yard scoring pass against the Hogs and Hall finds Kody Epps coming across the middle. Arkansas’ secondary can’t cover the Cougars and are grabbing too much, even with questions possibly on some of the calls. Cougars’ kicking issues continue and banging an extra point off the right upright may be a problem. BYU 13, Hogs 7

2Q 12:19: This might turn into a shootout. Hogs answer with a 75-yard drive in 10 plays as Jefferson finds tight end Trey Knox, who sat down on an inside opening shaded outside and a fairly easy 7-yard scoring pass. Hogs 14, BYU 13

2Q 9:48: Okay, this is getting kind of embarrassing for Arkansas’s secondary that is getting slowly eaten alive by the Cougars’ passing game. Even with BYU having a long scoring pass called back on a facemask penalty, they move the ball down the field through air and don’t appear remotely interested in running, but get a 5-yard run from Puka Nacua. They complete a two-point conversion and are back on track with scores. BYU 21, Hogs 14

2Q 6:46: Did Hogs just blink? In a game turning into an offensive explosion scoring touchdowns, it’s BYU’s secondary that steps up and holds Arkansas to a 34-yard field goal from Cam Little that cuts into the lead. BYU 21, Hogs 17

2Q 3:39: Razorbacks’ defense steps up and stops BYU on downs near midfield and have a short drive leading to a 4-yard pass from Jefferson to wide receiver Matt Landers and get the lead back. Hogs 24, BYU 21

2Q :40: Jefferson sees a mismatch in coverage and hits running back Rashod Dubinion on a wheel route for a 15-yard scoring play. Jefferson made the play avoiding a sack and four BYU tacklers, then finding Knox open, who broke some tackles for a big gain setting up the scoring pass. Hogs 31, BYU 21

End First Half

Third Quarter

3Q 9:53: BYU gets the ball first after halftime and promptly starts running the ball, driving 75 yards in 10 plays and Nacua gets the final three yards around right end after another pass interference call, this time against the Hogs’ Simeon Blair. Hogs 31, BYU 28

3Q 9:20: The Hogs don’t need much time to answer, going 75 yards in three plays, getting a big pass interference penalty from BYU. Hogs’ offense may start trying to shorten this game if they can get another score. Jefferson completed a 38-yard scoring pass from Jefferson to Matt Landers Hogs 38, BYU 28

3Q 5:11: If you get the over on this one, you are probably in spectacular shape. The Cougars answer the Hogs’ score with a 33-yard pass from Hall to a wide open Nacua behind a secondary that is playing guys you have to scramble to look at the roster to see who they are. Hogs 38, BYU 35

3Q 1:13: The punters on both teams have just had a nice, leisurely afternoon in the Utah mountains. The Hogs answered BYU’s touchdown by gashing the defense through the air and passing with Jefferson moving in the pocket on a third-and-goal before finding a wide open Landers in the end zone. Hogs 45, BYU 35

Fourth Quarter

4Q 14:25: The Razorbacks have probably broken this three-game losing streak. Sanders, who sat out the entire third quarter, finally got in the game in the final quarter and blew through a huge crease for a 64-yard scoring run. Hogs 52, BYU 35

Hogs facing tall mountain in Utah against good BYU team

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — At the halfway point of the season, Arkansas finds itself right back where it started.

Sitting at 3-3 with fans’ highest hopes dashed, the Razorbacks have to hit the road now to get things headed back into a positive direction.

Just like last year, only the record was 4-3 before a 4-1 finish to the regular season that ignited everybody’s excitement level.

A lot of fans just look at the offense. That’s a time-honored tradition for Hog fans, by the way, that goes back decades.

Whether anybody wants to admit it or not, last week’s game was probably going to happen regardless of quarterback KJ Jefferson’s status.

Against a pretty good offensive-minded coach in Mike Leach and a quarterback in Will Rogers that’s considered one of the best passers in the country, the Hogs were in trouble with a patchwork secondary.

It got worse when they lost a couple of defensive backs against Mississippi State early, then went downhill at a rapid rate.

This week they got a team in BYU that has a long history of wild passing attacks. They even won a national championship in a 1984 season not really playing anybody. I didn’t vote for them.

But it’s the only time a non-Power 5 team won a national title.

This year’s Cougars aren’t that good.

But they are capable of beating this Razorback team.

Somehow, some way, defensive coordinator Barry Odom is going to have to get some stops against the BYU passing game.

It will be a hostile crowd and a whiteout. The Cougars are 7-7 all time against the SEC, so they have won games before.

The Hogs have to get their running game to shorten everything and keep the BYU offense on the sidelines. Nobody has ever scored a lot of points while standing out of bounds.

All the running backs are healthy and that worked out well through the first three games. Last week in a loss to Notre Dame in one of those showcase-type games in Las Vegas, the Cougars held their own physically.

If you think the Hogs are just going to be able to line up and run all afternoon, that’s probably not going to happen.

This game is probably going to come down to Arkansas’ defense and getting off the field enough to get a win.

BYU on the schedule was a trap from the time they showed up.

The other part of this equation is the mental state of the Razorbacks. All we’ve heard this week has been positive from Sam Pittman and the players.

What did you expect? Nobody was going to step up to the microphone and express doom-and-gloom. That’s not how football teams work.

We won’t know until late Saturday evening.

The guess here is the Hogs are running into an electric atmosphere that is going to be difficult at best. The mountain simply may be too high to cross.

BYU 31, Hogs 21

The rest of the SEC is playing league opponents. It should make for an interesting week picking these things. Pete Morgan and I are probably around even in the picks contest.

But however far I am in front this is a week he may get a little closer.

Auburn at 9 Ole Miss (-15): Somehow Bryan Harsin is still the coach of the Tigers, but that could end this week with a bye week coming up. Arkansas has to face whoever is coaching the Tigers just a couple of days before Halloween and that game is too interesting with too many questions to even begin handicapping now. In this one, the Rebels should have a win behind their running game. Ole Miss 34, Auburn 20

Vanderbilt at 1 Georgia (-38): There aren’t many teams taking the Commodores in this one, even getting that many points. If the Bulldogs don’t have the predicted romp, they may switch places with Alabama in the rankings again. Georgia 52, Vanderbilt 7

3 Alabama (-7) at 6 Tennessee: If you think the environment at BYU is big, this one is bigger. The Vol Nation will be out in full force. This game is big-time tradition that is heavily weighted towards the Crimson Tide, but the Vols are playing the best they’ve done in years. For some reason, there may actually be a chance Alabama may be in trouble, but it’s really hard to pick against a Nick Saban team and I’m not ready to go there yet. Alabama 34, Tennessee 31

LSU at Florida (-2.5): Don’t expect a game that’s particularly pretty here. It will probably a grinder, but I keep thinking the Gators are better than what they keep doing and too many questions around LSU right now. Don’t look for it to be a wild shootout, though. Florida 27, LSU 24

16 Mississippi State (-4) at 22 Kentucky: Another close game for a Bulldogs’ team that has been drawing praise all week after a beatdown of Arkansas last week. Traditionally, road teams with a night game a week after a big emotional win have a letdown. That likely will be the case in this one, but this may be a magical season in Starkville. Mississippi State 28, Kentucky 17

Matt Jones Press Release

Matt Jones joins ESPN Arkansas
October 12, 2022

Matt Jones, former star quarterback at the University of Arkansas, is joining the on-air team at ESPN Arkansas as co-host of Halftime with Phil Elson.

Matt Jones grew up in Van Buren and had a playing career at Arkansas spanning the 2001 to 2004 football seasons. He was the full-time starter at quarterback from 2002 to 2004. Jones was drafted in the 2005 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the 21 st overall pick. In addition to football, Jones also played two seasons with the Razorback Basketball team, 2001-02 and 2003-04, appearing in 28 games in his career.

“I am excited about the opportunity to be back on the air as part of the talented team of people at ESPN Arkansas,” Matt Jones said. “Being able to talk about the Razorbacks with Phil Elson every day on the show will be fun and I appreciate Tommy, and everyone involved for making this a reality.”

During his freshman season in 2001, Jones led the Razorbacks to a thrilling 7 overtime win against Ole Miss. In 2002 Matt led Arkansas to a share of the SEC Western Division Championship with one of the most iconic finishes to any game in Razorback history. Jones’ pass to Decori Birmingham in the closing seconds of the season finale against LSU has become known by most Arkansans as “The Miracle on Markham.” In 2003, Jones led Arkansas to another 7-overtime victory, this time defeating Kentucky en route to consecutive 9-win seasons.

“The story of Razorback Football over the past 25 seasons cannot be told without a few chapters being written about Matt Jones” Tommy Craft, General Manager ESPN Arkansas said. “Razorbacks fans everywhere have vivid memories of Matt during his playing days, and we are excited to have him on our team to talk with the people of Arkansas every day. Matt will be able to give all of us his unique insights as a former football and basketball player at Arkansas and I can’t wait to hear him with Phil on Halftime.”

Matt Jones will begin co-hosting Halftime on Monday, October 17th at 11am. Jones will also be appearing on other programs and podcasts produced by ESPN Arkansas.
