LIVE BLOG: Rebels dominate offensive numbers but Hogs dominate scoreboard

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Ole Miss rang up yards like a slot machine that got stuck.

Arkansas was just fine with building up a 35-6 halftime lead and coasting in the second half to a 42-27 win over the Rebels.

Now the Razorbacks have qualified for a bowl game. That will be determined in a few weeks and the season finale on Friday at Missouri will also play a role in sorting that out.

The Hogs got 503 yards of total offense while the Rebels had 650. Ole Miss also had 12 costly penalties and two fumbles, which let things get out of hand quickly.

Quarterback KJ Jefferson threw for 168 yards on 17-of-22 passing with three touchdowns and running back Raheim Sanders had 232 yards on the ground.

The Hogs are now 6-5 on the year headed back on the road to finish things up.

The cold weather showed up as planned.

Ole Miss won the opening toss and got the ball first and overcome a first-down holding call before fumbling and Drew Sanders recovered.

The Razorbacks’ offense was sluggish with a three-and-out.

This is the live blog and we’ll have updates throughout Arkansas-Ole Miss tonight at Razorback Stadium.

First Quarter

1Q 8:28: Razorbacks get offense moving for a seven-play, 69-yard drive, with quarterback KJ Jefferson making plays, including a couple of passes to tight end Trey Knox and a 23-yard sprint to the 8. He hit Matt Landers on a quick slant for an 8-yard scoring pass and an early lead. Hogs 7, Rebels 0.

1Q 3:44: This is more like what the Hogs’ offense was supposed to be. After Ole Miss has a touchdown called back for a holding penalty, Jefferson hits Landers in the end zone with a 23-yard scoring pass. Hogs 14, Rebels 0.

Second Quarter

2Q 2:00: Ole Miss finally gets some offense with Jaxson Dart throwing for 53 yards to Malik Heath. The Rebels stalled, though, and had to settle for a 45-yard field goal from Jonathan Cruz, but this doesn’t appear to look like the end of the scoring on the night. Hogs 14, Rebels 3.

2Q 14:03: This time it’s Ketron Jackson on the receiving end of a Jefferson touchdown pass, 20 yards to open a big lead. Hogs 21, Rebels 3.

2Q 4:38: Ole Miss piling up more holding penalties (six for 57 yards in first half) and Cruz kicks a 32-yard field goal after the second touchdown of the night was called back on a holding penalty. Hogs 28, Rebels 6.

2Q 2:20: This one is turning into a breakaway as the Hogs’ offense has put up 326 yards, including 198 on the ground (Raheim Sanders has 146 of that total). Sanders scores on a 20-yard run over the left side and this may be a hill too big for the Rebels to dig themsleves out of. Hogs 28, Rebels 6.

2Q :05: Going for the kill shot just before halftime may have blown this one wide open. The Hogs go 48 yards in six plays with Sanders getting the last eight and it looks like the running game may start putting this one away. Hogs 35, Rebels 6.

Second Half

3Q 14:16: Hogs blow things open completely in the first minute of the second half with a 68-yard scoring run by Raheim Sanders, who has just had a ridiculous 221 yards with nearly a half left. Hogs 42, Rebels 6.

Fourth Quarter

4Q 14:02: Ole Miss finally gets a touchdown but it took them nearly 46 minutes. Quinshon Judkins got in from a yard out but by now all the Hogs have to do is don’t give up a bunch of cheap quick scores after the Rebels blew a two-point conversion. Hogs 42, Rebels 12.

4Q 8:02: Nobody has played defense in this game. The Rebels get a 48-yard scoring run by Zach Evans and you might want to sit down for this: Ole Miss has 590 yards of offense while the Hogs have 512 … but they have a 22-point lead. Hogs 42, Rebels 20.

4Q 2:55: Ole Miss adds a so-what touchdown on a 13-yard pass from Jaxson Dart to Malik Heath. Hogs 42, Rebels 27.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — So much for a nice, comfortable end to fall.

When Arkansas and Ole Miss kick things off Saturday night, the temperature will be cold. Sorry, chilly or any other fancy descriptions done’s cut it.

It will be cold for both teams.

About the only good news is there won’t be any wet stuff falling so the heaters on the sidelines will help.

As far as the game goes, the Razorbacks should have quarterback KJ Jefferson back and that may or may not invigorate the offense, but fans will be holding their breath every time he gets hit.

The Hogs need to win and get all the bowl drama behind them. A win also gives them a shot of finishing just one less win away from last season.

With a road trip to Missouri next week for another game where it will be cold, nothing is a guaranteed win and two wins will get the Hogs to somewhere other than Birmingham for a bowl game.

Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. on the SEC Network.

• The Hogs and Rebels will meet under the lights at Razorback Stadium in the penultimate game of the 2022 regular season.

Arkansas, looking to reach the six-win mark for the second year in a row and become bowl eligible for the third straight season, hosts No. 14 Ole Miss at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, on SEC Network.

• With a win against Ole Miss, Sam Pittman would become the fourth Arkansas coach to earn bowl eligibility in each of their first three seasons, joining Lou Holtz (1977-79), Ken Hatfield (1984-86) and Houston Nutt (1998-00).

• The temperature at kickoff for Saturday’s home finale is projected to be 30 degrees. It would be coldest game played in Fayetteville since Nov. 2, 1991, when the temperature at kickoff between Arkansas and Baylor was 29 degrees.

KJ Jefferson (Ted McClenning / HitThatLine.com)

• Quarterback KJ Jefferson does his damage through the air and on the ground. Jefferson has completed 148-of-222 passes (66.7%) for 1,981 yards and 17 touchdowns with just three interception while rushing for 425 yards and six scores in eight games. Despite missing two contests, Jefferson, who has eight career games with both a passing and rushing touchdown, is one of two SEC quarterbacks with 15 passing touchdowns and at least five rushing scores this season.

Raheim Sanders (Ted McClenning / HitThatLine.com)

• Running back Raheim ‘Rocket’ Sanders is the Hogs’ leading rusher through 10 games, totaling 1,147 yards on 185 carries (6.2 avg.) with seven scores on the ground. Sanders, who ranks second in the SEC in both rushing yards (1,147) and rushing yards per game (114.7), only needed eight games this season to reach the 1,000-yard rushing mark, matching RB Madre Hill’s program record of eight games set in 1995.

Jadon Haselwood (Ted McClenning / HitThatLine.com)

• Wide receiver Jadon Haselwood leads Arkansas with a team-high49 catches for 592 yards (12.1 avg.) and three touchdowns through nine games. A transfer from Oklahoma, Haselwood has caught three or more passes in each of his first 10 games as a Hog and has tallied at least one reception in 26 consecutive games played dating back to the 2019 season.

Drew Sanders (Ted McClenning / HitThatLine.com)

• Linebacker Drew Sanders has emerged as one of the top defensive playmakers in college football this season, racking up 86 total tackles with a team-leading 12.0 tackles for loss and a team-high 8.5 sacks through 10 games. His 8.5 sacks are the most by a Razorback defender since DE Chris Smith totaled 8.5 sacks in 2013, which is tied for eighth most in a season in school history. Sanders leads the SEC in sacks, sitting a half-sack ahead of Alabama LB Will Anderson Jr. (8.0).

ANDY’S PICKS: Lot of Assuming Hogs Fixed Things

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — For some reason, many Arkansas fans have convinced themselves the cold weather for tonight’s game hurts Ole Miss more.

That’s ridiculous.

Whatever weather hits here usually follows in Oxford 24-48 hours later. I know. I lived there for a number of years.

This game is going to come down to the mental aspect of who wants to come out of a warm locker room at halftime.

You can start justifying a lot of things when it’s freezing cold and big people are hitting you very hard. Who knows how hard the ground will feel, but it won’t be forgiving.

As for motivation, the Razorbacks are trying to qualify for a bowl … any bowl at this point is better than the other option. The loss to Liberty removed a lot of leverage to be picky about which one.

The Rebels are still playing for a New Year’s 6 game for the second straight year.

This time they have developed a running game to go along with a hard-hitting, stingy defense that has created problems for every team they’ve played this year and they took Alabama down to the wire.

Historically, goofy things happen to Ole Miss in Fayetteville and pretty much that was when Houston Nutt coached the Rebels, so no explanations there.

It’s a night game and going to be cold. Everybody has said all of the correct things this week, but because of that miserable cold, don’t think anything in the past has anything to do with tonight’s game.

The Hogs are going to have to stop the Rebels’ running game and be able to develop some sort of consistency on offense.

This is about the hardest game on the schedule to pick.

Hogs 24, Rebels 20

SEC Picks for Week 12

Two weeks left in the picks race, and Andy seems to be Master of his Domain … or so he says.

Austin Peay at (8) Alabama: As usual, this is a game for the Crimson Tide to get ready for the Iron Bowl next week, which somehow usually figures out a way to be completely dramatic. Alabama by 31.

East Tennessee State at Mississippi State: For the Bulldogs, it’s another win to stack for a better bowl game. East Tennesse is just waiting for the check to arrive. This one can be whatever Mike Leach wants to make it. Mississippi State by 42.

UMass at Texas A&M: While Pete Morgan flipped a coin for this game I’m not going to use that much energy. The only caveat to that is if the Aggies figure out a way to lose this one, the flames will get bigger than Jimbo Fisher, who will still keep his job. Texas A&M by 20.

Florida at Vanderbilt: Vandy somehow beat a Kentucky team that thought they could just show up and take home a win, which somehow didn’t happen. It won’t be pretty, but the Gators should handle this one. Florida by 9.

(1) Georgia at Kentucky: The last thing the Wildcats need to wee right now is the top-ranked team in the country coming to town after falling down completely against Vanderbilt. None of that will really matter. Georgia is playing for back-to-back national titles. Georgia by 24.

(5) Tennessee at South Carolina: The Gamecocks have gotten better all year but they aren’t ready for this offensive onslaught headed into town. It won’t really be close. Tennessee by 31.

New Mexico State at Missouri: You would think teams like this they way they want to improve playing SEC teams might actually do that it might happen with the Aggies, but it hasn’t in several decades. Missouri by 21.

UAB at (6) LSU: The last game in Tiger Stadium for this year won’t be a close one at all. LSU by 28.

PETE’S PICKS: Razorbacks will win cold one in Fayetteville

Life is not all roses. It is not a box of chocolate. You do not always get what you want.

Expressions, right?

I have come to the realization this week that each person has to accept they are not perfect, nor are those around them. There are pros and cons to every tale. To every person. To every aspect in life.

So while there is no perfect one thing we can see or experience in this life, oftentimes two things come together which are perfect for each other or together.

Right now, I am not talking about the Arkansas defense and special teams.

Something is wrong in Fayetteville, folks, and it is up to Sam Pittman to figure out and correct whatever it is. The Arkansas Razorbacks football team is not blending well on the field.

There is no consistency past the defensive line, and our punting game has become suspect (in my opinion). Furthermore, every team in the SEC has exploited it since we lost to Texas A&M.

Ole Miss comes to town Saturday, and they are extremely well coached, and Lane Kiffin will have his team ready to play including (but not limited to) the quarterback and the receivers dissecting the Arkansas secondary.

I do not know what to say, honestly. I sit here at my desk, I enjoy my view, and I wonder what the future holds; however, I cannot seem to have much hope and confidence our defense can stop anyone with a number beside their team name this year.

We did play better against LSU. Hopefully that game built a swag which can only be carried onto Frank Broyles Field when we host the Rebels.

I could go on and on about how our offensive line needs to open up passing lanes and perform better on the run blocking scheme. I might also ramble on about how our defensive pressure up front on Saturday had better get into the Ole Miss backfield as quickly as possible to harass sophomore quarterback Jaxson Dart.

I could do all that, yet I think you can read about that in other HTL pieces by men who know a lot more about the game than I do. So why bother? I am just here so I do not get fined… or accused of plagiarism.

We should simply spend the next several sentences making fun of Lane Kiffin. I am certain you all can attempt my attempt to be mature yet falling short when the chips are on the line.

Speaking of gambling, someone give Kiffin directions to Siloam Springs tomorrow afternoon.

It is time to pick the score, right?

Arkansas 34-27

Random Thoughts

• If you are going to Razorback Stadium on Saturday night, you had better bring extra clothes, heavy blankets, and a whistle. You are going to look like our last memory of Jack Dawson by the third quarter.

• Arkansas can and will win this game.

• I wonder what Ole Miss’s mascot will be this week. (Editor’s Note: Their nickname is Rebels and the mascot is a black bear dressed up in Rebels’ gear because the previous Col. Reb figure running around scared the daylights out of little kids).

Saturday night will bring new meaning to the dub “Fayettechill.”

TRIVIA QUESTION: Where does Lane Kiffin buy his sun visors?

The over/under on the announcers making bad Jaxson Dart puns is currently set at 3.5.

Two weeks later, does anyone still think KJ got in on the two-point conversion?

TRIVIA ANSWER: Really? You had to look? We all know those are given to him at no cost. You are such a rebel.

Bowl eligibility and placement hang in the balance over the next two games. What are your expectations and where is your level of sheer disappointment?

I heard it said by my friend Kane that this is technically Sam Pittman’s sophomore year. Do you agree?

Be certain to listen to the game Saturday at 6:30 p.m. on HitThatLine.com and on the air at ESPN Arkansas 99.5 in Fayetteville, 95.3 in the River Valley, 96.3 in Hot Springs, and 104.3 in Harrison-Mountain Home.

SEC Picks for Week 12

Two weeks left in the picks race, and Andy seems to be Master of his Domain … or so he says.

Austin Peay at (8) Alabama: Fans in Tuscaloosa will be able to breathe easier this week as they tune up for Auburn. Bama by 40.

ETSU at Mississippi State: I think my fiancé buys stuff off the ETSU app all the time. The Bulldogs are buying a win. Mississippi State by 30.

UMass at Texas A&M: I am flipping a coin on this one… Seriously. Aggies by who knows?

Florida at Vanderbilt: How about those Commodores?! After upsetting a flailing Kentucky team, the boys of Vandy will look more like themselves as they host Florida this week. Gators by 13.

(1) Georgia at Kentucky: The Wildcats are on a landslide, and their schedule will only get tougher as they welcome the number one team in the nation into Lexington. Mark Stoops’s resume is looking less impressive to prospective programs. Bulldogs by 24.

(5) Tennessee at South Carolina: Tennessee fans are annoying. Yes, that is the only take on this game. Vols by 20.

(14) Ole Miss at Arkansas – GAME OF THE WEEK: Why GOTW honors? Why not? It is the most intriguing SEC contest this week. All hail Fayettenam in 20-degree weather. Hogs by 8.

New Mexico State at Missouri: New Mexico State seems to play more SEC games than Mississippi State does. Tigers by 24.

UAB at (6) LSU: Yawn.  Well, half-yawn. This will be a good game going into the second half. LSU pulls away. Tigers by 28.

Soller Opposites

Eric is still well on the plus side of .500. That is good enough for me to take some solid advice. Kiffin himself would be honored at the gambling prowess.

Colorado +31 at Washington

Curiosity over the linkage between the decline of the Buffs football program and legalization of marijuana aside, this line is too high.

Washington’s full-course upset of Oregon last week has the eyes of the Huskies focused on an apple dessert next week as they take on Washington State.

Colorado has little to bring to the feast but will pick up a cheap, convenience store running game on their way to Seattle. As gracious hosts, the Huskies will placate their guests and allow them to run for a while.

Eating up the clock, there will not be enough time or motivation to push the spread over 30.

Take Colorado +31 and a bottle of Pepto.

Back to Ole Miss at Arkansas; check in during the game for all the highlights and updates from Saturday’s contest.

Patience is a virtue. Great things come to those who wait. Things happen when you least expect them. To my favorite expression, thanks for all you have done for me.

Mike Neighbors, Razorbacks cruise to big win over Kent State

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas led for all but two minutes in Thursday’s game against Kent State cruising to an 80-59 victory.

That win marks Mike Neighbors’ 100th win at Arkansas to help the Razorbacks start the season 4-0 for the first time since 2019. Samara Spencer (22) and Erynn Barnum (20) both dropped 20-point games in the victory.

Kent State took an early lead, 6-3, three minutes into the game, but Spencer tied things up at six following a 3-pointer.

Samara Spencer (Andy Hodges / HitThatLine.com)

After another Kent layup, Arkansas scored six straight points to lead 11-8 at the media timeout. Arkansas extended its lead to seven, but that was short-lived, as Kent State went on a 7-2 run to cut it within two with 1:24 left in the first.

Rylee Langerman then hit a 3-pointer and Makayla Daniels followed with a layup, as Arkansas led 24-17 after the first quarter.

Arkansas started the second quarter on a 13-2 run, which put the Razorbacks ahead 37-19 four minutes into the frame.

Chrissy Carr helped get that run started with a jumper and her second 3-pointer of the game, while Spencer delivered layups on back-to-back possessions.

The Razorbacks outscored the Golden Flashes 22-12 in the second quarter, as Arkansas took a 46-29 advantage going into the half.

Chrissy Carr (Andy Hodges / HitThatLine.com)

Following a Spencer layup to kick off the second half, Kent scored five straight layups and cut the lead to 14 with 6:12 left in the third, which would be the closest the Golden Flashes would get the rest of the game.

Barnum made layups on back-to-back possessions and the Razorbacks shot 5-for-6 from the charity stripe in the remainder of the quarter to take a 64-46 edge going into the final quarter.

Arkansas kept on putting their foot on the gas, as Spencer and Daniels drained 3-pointers back-to-back and Barnum kept on going to work in the paint. After another Daniels triple,

Arkansas went ahead by 27, their largest lead of the night, 75-48. Arkansas outscored Kent 16-13 in the fourth quarter, and the Razorbacks won by a convincing 21 points, 80-59.

Game Highlights

• Spencer paced the Razorbacks with her fourth career 20-point game. She delivered a solid stat line of 22 points, seven defensive rebounds and a career-high seven assists.

• Barnum’s first 20-point game of her career came on Monday, but she delivered her second consecutive 20-point game tonight. She ended with 20 points, six rebounds and a block.

• Carr showed fans glimpses of all she is capable of with 12 points off 4-of-7 shooting and four rebounds.

• Saylor Poffenbarger led the team in efficiency for the third straight game at +29. She pulled down six rebounds and blocked three shots.

Makayla Daniels (Andy Hodges / HitThatLine.com)

• Daniels delivered nine rebounds, five assists and four steals. She surpassed Sarah Pfeifer on the all-time scoring list and is now at No. 28 with 1,060 career points.

• Eleven players saw action on Thursday night.

• Arkansas shot a season-best 45.5 percent from the field and drained nine 3-pointers.

• The Razorbacks registered 19 assists, which is also a season high.

• Neighbors achieved 100 wins on the Hill, becoming the fourth Arkansas coach to meet the century mark.

Next Game

Arkansas will wrap up its stint of three games in seven days on Sunday at Little Rock. Tipoff is set at 1 p.m. at the Jack Stephens Center. Coverage of the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
