Yurachek: Hogs have procedures for event like Damar Hamlin injury

0

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Like much of the country, Arkansas athletics director saw the horrific injury on Monday Night Football.

“I knew right away something was wrong,” he said Tuesday afternoon via phone. “You also knew it wasn’t good.”

The injury occurred when Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin made a tackle in their game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

At first, everything appeared routine.

Until Hamlin suddenly collapsed. The reaction from the players, who see injuries all the time, was almost immediate and near-panic. That told everyone something was seriously wrong.

As of Monday night, Hamlin was still alive and in critical condition in a Cincinnati hospital, according to reports. Mostly because of the quick reaction of the NFL’s plan for such an event, although it fortunately never had to be experienced in real time.

The Razorbacks have the defibrillator units located at all of their home venues. Emergency staff are in the facilities and on standby during all events.

“We have a lot,” Yurachek said. “Don’t know the exact number, but could get that from our facilities people. Walk past them a lot in our venues.”

Fortunately, everything has just been practiced for such an event at a Hogs’ event. But Hamlin’s injury will have everybody checking into things.

“Our medical people and trainers will be reviewing our procedures for sure,” Yurachek said.
The SEC will also be looking at it closely with new medical advisor Catherine O’Neal, who is a associate professor of Clinical Medicine at the LSU Health Sciences Center.

Every team in the league will be watching the situation and analyzing it closely.

“Everyone will make sure all of us sharpen our procedures,” Yurachek said. “The NFL will send us a lot of information about what they had planned worked and what could have worked better.”

That will help everyone be better prepared.

For something no one really wants to put into live action.

WATCH: Hogs’ Eric Musselman previews Missouri SEC opener

Razorbacks will face ranked Missouri team Wednesday night, which is first time both in the rankings to start league play.

Poffenbarger, Barnum lift Hogs to first win at Kentucky in two decades

LEXINGTON, Ky. — No. 24-23 Arkansas women’s basketball team bounced back from a three-game losing streak with a 71-50 win over Kentucky on New Year’s Day.

Arkansas’ win was the first time the Razorbacks leave Lexington victorious since 2003 in a series where Kentucky had won nine out of the previous 10 games.

The Hogs were paced by a well-balanced offensive attack with a season-high 22 assists. Saylor Poffenbarger and Erynn Barnum had 17 points apiece, while Barnum also added eight boards, a career-high seven assists and three blocks.

In the opening minutes of the game, once the Hogs got on the board, Kentucky responded on the other end to tie the game. After Kentucky went up by two, Poffenbarger converted a basket and a foul to help the Razorbacks go up 9-8 just after the media timeout.

Kentucky was held off the scoreboard for the remaining 5:33 of the half and Arkansas capitalized by going on a 10-0 run, capped off by a Rylee Langerman 3-pointer, who also made several key defensive plays. Arkansas held a 16-8 lead after the first quarter, highlighted by forcing 10 Wildcat turnovers in the first 10 minutes.

Barnum scored the Razorbacks’ first six points out of the break, all off layups to force Kentucky to take a timeout, as Arkansas led 22-8 with 7:03 left in the second quarter.

After Kentucky took its timeout, the Wildcats came out strong in the paint with back-to-back baskets, but Barnum kept rolling with another layup. Arkansas was up by as many as 20, 32-12, following a deep Samara Spencer 3-pointer, but Kentucky got going on a 7-2 run to close the half with the Razorbacks ahead, 34-19.

Kentucky kept their momentum rolling from late in the first half by scoring the first four points out of the break.

The Razorbacks would respond with 3-pointers on the next two possessions courtesy of Carr and Makayla Daniels. Those two triples sparked a 12-2 run, as the Razorbacks extended their lead, 46-25, with 4:41 remaining in the third quarter.

Initiated by another Daniels’ triple, Arkansas closed out the quarter on a 7-3 run to lead, 53-28, after 30 minutes.

The Wildcats put the foot on the gas, opening the fourth quarter on an 8-2 run. At the media timeout, the Razorbacks were still ahead, 59-37.

Kentucky found their way to the line 14 times in the fourth quarter, making 11 of those free throws. Arkansas was outscored by Kentucky 22-18 in the fourth quarter, but the Razorbacks still elevated to a big 71-50 win in Lexington for the first time since 2003.

Hogs Highlights
