Could Dan Enos getting another 4-star KJ work out as well as last?

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — New Arkansas offensive coordinator Dan Enos has secured his first big quarterback commitment.

And it’s another four-star from another state named KJ.

Maybe he saw the last one worked out pretty well with current top quarterback KJ Jefferson.

This time it’s a four-star signal-caller out of Montgomery, Ala., named KJ Jackson that looks similar, but it will be ineresting to compare the early development of this one under Enos.

It took awhile before Jefferson caught up. Of course, the coaching staff when he was a freshman probably left a lot to be desired at the SEC level, considering they were shown the door before he finished that freshman year.

He made the announcement at 5:30 on Easter afternoon.

“When picking a college I really wanted somewhere that felt like home,” Jackson told 247Sports. “Coach Pitt and coach (Dan) Enos both made it the priority to make me feel at home. Also, being able to play under a coach like Coach Enos with 13 quarterbacks in the NFL is an opportunity that is hard to pass up.”

Jackson is the No. 391 player in the country on the 247Sports.com composite ranking, the 24th best quarterback in country and 23rd in Alabama.

He’ll join some other quarterbacks already on campus with Jacolby Criswell having 2-3 years left with the Hogs and Malachi Singleton an incoming freshman already on campus.

There will probably be more and the numbers show you won’t make it through a season in the SEC for 12 games plus a bowl game without injuries. There are exceptions to that premise, but they are few and far apart.

Eric Musselman lands Houston guard Tramon Mark out of portal

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas coach Eric Musselman is stockpiling guards.

Apparently the Razorbacks picked up a big commitment from Houston guard Tramon Mark, who is also going through the NBA Draft process, but is expected to stay for at least another year.

The 6-5, 195-pound wing guard from Dickinson, Texas (we’ll save you the trouble of looking that up, it’s a town I-45 runs smack through going from Houston to Galveston), started every game for Kelvin Sampson’s team that was a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament last year.

Mark averaged 10.1 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 2022-23 while shooting 39% from the field, 32.8% beyond the three-point line and 78.4% at the free throw line as a redshirt sophomore.

The No. 5 player in the CBS Sports transfer portal rankings chose Musselman and the Hogs over Florida, Kansas State and Texas A&M.

He is the second commitment this week after Washington guard Kenyon Menifield committed last Tuesday.

With now three of the highly-ranked freshman class coming back (Derrian Ford, Barry Dunning and Joseph Pinion), it’s clear Musselman is recruiting current players.

Nick Smith Jr., and Ricky Council IV are declared firmly for the NBA Draft while Davonte Davis is dipping his toe in the water to check the feedback he gets, but could return.

There has been absolutely no word from freshman point guard Anthony Black (although he was in attendance at the softball game Saturday) and that was even put on social media from Eric Musselman.

No guesses there or on freshman forward Jordan Walsh, who has been all over the place with his social media and interviews after the Hogs were eliminated by eventual national champion UConn in the Sweet 16.

McEntire’s start, Wood’s finish with timely hits gives Hogs a series win

Arkansas got what coach Dave Van Horn really wanted no matter how it looked Saturday afternoon in Oxford, Miss.

He wasn’t really wanting to ride a bus for 5.5 hours back to Fayetteville, Ark.

“Just glad we got a couple of wins and we get out of here,” Van Horn said after a 6-4 win over Ole Miss. “We just fought ’em.”

It was that kind of a day. Even though the Rebels are defending national champions, they have struggled after getting through non-conference play with a 16-3 record.

The loss Saturday dropped the Rebels to 2-10 in the SEC while the Razorbacks are now 25-6 overall and 8-4 in the league after winning two-of-three.

It’s the only bus trip of the year for the Hogs for a variety of reasons that aren’t just about saving some money. Getting in and out of Oxford isn’t the easiest thing in the world for anything outside of a small jet.

“This is a tough place to play,” he said after beating the Rebels in back-to-back road series for the first time since 2008 and 2010. “It will make the ride home a lot better.”

The Hogs kept getting a lead, then Ole Miss would figure out a way to tie it up. Arkansas took a 1-0 lead in the third on a homer by Caleb Cali, then the Rebels chipped back with a run in the fourth to tie the game against Hogs’ starter Will McEntire.

Less than a week ago, Van Horn didn’t even know if he would be available after a flu diagnosis Sunday that forced him to go with Hagen Smith and a committee in a 7-4 loss. McEntire got the start in the last game Saturday.

“He fought as long as he could,” Van Horn said later. “It was good we kept scoring.”

After the Hogs scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Caleb Cali, who was 2-for-3 at the plate, scored one of them on a wild pitch and Peyton Stovall singled in John Bolton.

And, of course, the Rebels tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

The Hogs pushed two more runs across in the top of the seventh inning and Gage Wood, who worked the final three innings, held the Rebels to a single run to close out the series.

Arkansas will host Little Rock for games on Tuesday night and Wednesday evening before a weekend series with Tennessee, who is struggling this season.

Razorbacks split doubleheader to open series with Ole Miss on road

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — As often happens in the SEC, the Arkansas-Ole Miss series will come down to the third game.

With bad weather on Thursday forcing a doubleheader on Thursday, the Razorbacks missed a chance in the second game of the twin bill.

Will McEntire should be available Saturday to get another day of improving after a bout with the flu last week. Normally, he would have started the second game of the doubleheader.

Hunter Hollan started the first game and lasted six innings, giving up just three hits and no runs. He was relieved in the seventh by Dylan Carter, who gave up two runs on two hits, but kept things from getting out of hand.

Austin Ledbetter finished up and gave up a hit, but finished out an 11-2 win.

The two teams will play the final in the series Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. on the SEC Network. You can also listen to Phil Elson on the radio call on ESPN Arkansas 95.3 in the River Valley, 96.3 in Hot Springs and 104.3 in Harrison-Mountain Home.

Game 2

Somewhere between the first and second games, the Hogs lost their bats and the second game, 7-4.

After scoring 11 runs in the first game, the Razorbacks could only get three runs and two of them came on an RBI single by Brady Slavens for his fifth RBI in the doubleheader.

The Hogs added another run to tie the game 2-2 in the fifth inning with a double by Kendall Diggs that scored Jared Wegner, who had a walk earlier in the inning.

In this one, Ole Miss had the big inning.

The Rebels scored five runs in the sixth to open a 7-2 lead that stood up until the Hogs got a pair of runs in the ninth inning for the final margin.

Slavens hit a two-run homer in the ninth to total seven RBI in the opening day of the series.

Game 1

The Hogs got the big inning again … and early in an 11-2 blowout that really wasn’t as close as the final score sounds.

For the Rebels it was that bad.

As they have done at times, the Razorbacks jumped on Ole Miss starter XXX Dougherty early and by the time he left in the fifth inning, the game was out of hand.

Caleb Cali blasted a two-run homer in the second inning and the Hogs put together a huge fifth inning on a grand slam by Brady Slavens that chased Dougherty after Jace Bohrofen delivered a single run.

That homer made it 8-0 as Hogs’ starter Hunter Hollan worked six solid innings without giving up a run, allowing just three hits, striking out four and walking three.

With the offense that was good enough.

The Rebels pushed two runs across in the eighth inning before the Hogs added an insurance run on a triple from Kendall Diggs that scored a run and a double by Slavens brought him home.

Slavens was 3-for-4 at the plate with five RBI. Tavian Josenberger and Diggs were 2-for-4.
