Hogs complete series sweep of Vols with win Sunday

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas made it look routine again Sunday.

It was a lot like every other game in this series.

The Razorbacks started fast and throttled Tennessee, 7-2, to complete a big sweep that Dave Van Horn wanted to finish off after wins Friday and Saturday.

Ben Bybee started and lasted 3.1 before turning it over to Dylan Carter, who had to work out of a few jams, but got his sixth win of the year with 4.2 strong innings just finding a way to get people out.

The Hogs’ defense helped, turning a couple of double plays to end possible threats.

“We had a really good weekend in the field again,” Van Horn said. “We just kinda strung it together on offense. We left some people out there that could have come back to hurt us.”

Vols starting pitcher Chase Dollander led off by walking Razorbacks’ leadoff hitter Tavian Josenberger, who stole second and scored on a single by Peyton Stovall. A sacrifice to center by Brady Slavens scored Stovall and Jace Bohrofen drew a walk and scored on a single by Caleb Cali.

In all, it was a 3-0 start to the game for the Hogs and Bybee, who walked a couple of people in the first, but managed to get of it without giving up any runs.

Bybee loaded the bases in the second inning before not giving up another hit and the Hogs got a quick leadoff infield single from John Bolton. The Hogs loaded the bases when Kendall Diggs was hit by a pitch and Slavens drilled the first pitch down the right-field line all the way to the corner for a triple.

That made it 6-0 for Bybee to hang onto.

He shut down Tennessee in the third but after he hit another batter and gave up a walk in the fourth, Van Horn brought in Carter. The Vols managed to push across a couple of two-out runs before the Hogs got out of the inning with a 6-2 lead.

The Hogs got a solo homer from Josenberger in the sixth that would have brought home two runs if Bolton hadn’t gotten thrown out at second on a steal attempt. Josenberger drilled his seventh homer over the left field wall taking advantage of some gusty winds for a 7-2 lead.

Nobody really threatened in the later innings as Carter got the win, upping his record to 6-0. The Hogs are now 28-7 overall (10-4 in the SEC).

They will step out of conference play for a single game against UCA on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Isaiah Sategna provides biggest highlight in final practice

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Finding highlights in Arkansas’ final spring practice Saturday was a little tough.

Redshirt freshman Isaiah Sategna didn’t have a bad day, though. No stats were kept and

If nothing else, he showed us he can get open and catch passes against the Razorbacks’ backup defenders.

There is absolutely no clue how that will translate once SEC play starts.

Some folks showed up expecting a game-type atmosphere and got maybe an expanded practice format with some plays put in to give the fans a little extra something to cheer.

The redshirt freshman wide receiver from Fayetteville was the fastest athlete in the state for a few years. He stood out for the Bulldogs, but struggled as a freshman with the Hogs.

The light may have come on this spring and Saturday showed it.

“He’s playing with a lot of confidence,” coach Sam Pittman said later.

The stats weren’t exactly eye-popping. Just three catches for 95 yards doesn’t exactly leap out, but with his speed you expect a playmaker.

That’s what it was in this final practice Saturday with a pair of touchdown catches.

Especially his first catch, a 65-yarder from quarterback KJ Jefferson.

Sategna took advantage of a favorable matchup against South Florida transfer linebacker Antonio Grier and flew down the field for a 65-yard touchdown.

“I had seen (Lorando Johnson) tucked in a little bit,” Sategna said. “It looked like he was going to maybe blitz, which was the nickel. I knew that it was going to be 1-on-1 with the MIKE linebacker, which was Grier and stuff, so I had cleared him. I was looking for the ball then saw it coming. I had to make the catch and then go score.”

The next score was a 17-yard touchdown catch in the back left portion of the end zone on a well-thrown pass from Cade Fortin. He added a 13-yard reception two plays prior to round out his stats for the day.

“He’s much bigger if you look at him,” Pittman said. “He’s much thicker than what he was. His confidence is way up. It’s one thing to have confidence in high school and it’s another one to get here and … the game is so fast. Y’all see it out there. The closer you get to the game it’s fast.”

It’s the biggest adjustment every player has to figure out with each progression playing the sport. The ones that figure it out fastest have success earlier.

Maybe it just took him getting over some injuries and figuring it out.

“He’s made great strides this spring,” Jefferson said. “He’s really embraced it. That whole receiver room has really embraced the competition level. They come in each and every day ready to work.”

Saturday’s practice wrapped up spring practice as the team will have a meeting Monday, then more individual and group meetings next week before recruiting starts in earnest next weekend.

The next time the Hogs will be on the practice field will be at preseason camp in August before the season opener Sept. 2 against Western Carolina in Little Rock.

Razorbacks clinch series Saturday, doing for sweep over Tennessee

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.  — No. 5 Arkansas (28-7, 10-4 SEC) continued its dominance of No. 16 Tennessee (23-12, 5-9 SEC), clinching another series win against the Volunteers with a 6-3 win on Saturday night at Baum-Walker Stadium.

The Razorbacks, who have not dropped a regular-season weekend series against the Volunteers since 2005, have not lost a series to Tennessee in Fayetteville since 1996.

Under coach Dave Van Horn, Arkansas is now 29-14 overall against the Volunteers, including a commanding 14-5 record at home. Now they go for a sweep.

“We need to do everything we can to try to win that thing,” Van Horn said after the win. “We’ll just have to figure it out.”

Arkansas starter Will McEntire went toe-to-toe with Tennessee ace Chase Dollander and came out victorious. The Hogs’ veteran right-hander notched his third quality start of the season, twirling six innings of two-run ball with five strikeouts.

McEntire, who improved to 5-1 on the year with the win, allowed a leadoff home run to begin the ballgame but settled down after that, enabling the Razorback offense to quickly strike back.

“The conversations in the dugout were ‘Is he going to be able to start hitting some spots?’ Because if not, they’re going to score,” Van Horn said. “One of those guys got on on a walk. You know, if they hit you, they hit you. They’ve got guys that can hit. The wind’s blowing out and it should’ve been a hitters’ day, a hitters’ night.

“Then he just kind of flipped it.”

Tavian Josenberger’s 11-pitch walk to lead off the bottom of the first inning set the table for Jace Bohrofen’s fourth home run in as many games.

The Arkansas captain turned on a 3-1 pitch and jacked a two-run shot to right center to put Arkansas ahead, 2-1. His no-doubter extended the Razorbacks’ nation-leading home run streak to 31 consecutive games.

Bohrofen finished the game 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, raising his team-leading season slash line to .413/.541/.771 on the year. The Oklahoma City, Okla., native has swatted 10 homers and driven in 32 runs this season.

The Hogs’ maintained their one-run lead until the fifth when Ben McLaughlin singled home Caleb Cali from second. Tennessee clawed back with a solo homer in the top half of the sixth, but Arkansas dropped the hammer in the seventh.

A three-run inning put the Razorbacks firmly in control of the game. John Bolton, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame, came around to score on an error on an attempted pickoff at third before Kendall Diggs’ RBI single brought home Peyton Stovall, extending Arkansas’ advantage to 5-2.

Cali’s two-out RBI single through the right side later in the inning helped the Razorbacks tack on one more, providing Arkansas closer Gage Wood with a four-run cushion.

Wood, who entered in relief of McEntire to start the seventh, locked down the final three innings of Saturday night’s 6-3 win. The true freshman allowed one run and struck out a career-high six to secure his team-leading third save.

Arkansas looks to complete its second sweep against Tennessee in Fayetteville in as many tries in tomorrow’s series finale at Baum-Walker Stadium.

First pitch in game three between the Razorbacks, who swept the last weekend series in Fayetteville in 2019, and Volunteers is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday on SEC Network+.

Hogs take first game of series with Tennessee on 5-2 win

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Things didn’t start well for Arkansas on Friday night.

In a game built up by the fans because they want to create something between Tennessee coach Tony Vitello and Razorbacks coach Dave Van Horn that fizzled out early.

The Hogs got over the slow start and rolled to a 5-2 win over the Vols behind Hunter Hollan’s start that was typically rocky in the beginning, then settled out for a steady six innings. Hagen Smith finished things in what is becoming a fairly deadly opening-night combination.

That could turn out to be huge in this weekend series.

Hollan gave up five hits in the game, but the only damage was done in the first inning.

The Vols weren’t wasting any time at the plate and Jared Dickey cranked the fourth pitch of the game from Hunter Hollan off Kendall Diggs’ glove and over the wall and things were off and running. That was followed by a single that turned into a run for that early 2-0 lead.

It lasted until the third inning when Parker Rowland led off with a hit, John Bolton reached on a fielder’s choice and Tavian Josenberger drilled a three-run homer to right field.

That made it 3-2 and the Hogs added another run in the fourth when Brady Slavens reached on an error and scored a couple of batters later after they loaded the bases and the Vols turned a double play for a 4-2 lead.

Jace Bohrofen hit his ninth homer in the fifth for a 5-2 edge.

Hagen Smith came on in the seventh inning and struck out six of the first seven batters he faced before letting two people on, then striking out the potential tying run to end the game with a 5-2 win to kick off the series.

The Hogs and Vols will meet against Saturday night at 6 p.m. with pitchers to be announced. The game will be on SEC Network+.
