Razorbacks start slow, finish strong to down Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Arkansas (14-5, 2-2 SEC) overcame a slow start to defeat Alabama (15-4, 2-2 SEC), 77-59. Down 12-2 in the beginning of the game, Arkansas turned the tide, outscoring Alabama 47-27 in the second half. The Hogs earned its 10th straight win in Tuscaloosa, as Maryam Dauda broke the single-game school record with 10 blocks and the Hogs outrebounded Alabama, 52-35. Samara Spencer led the way with her first double-double of the season with a season-high 31 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.

Carly Keats helped the Hogs get on the board with a jumper, and then Arkansas came up empty on its next seven shot attempts. During that time, Alabama went on an 11-0 run, while the Hogs were held in a scoring drought for over three minutes. Arkansas called a timeout, down 12-2 with 6:33 left in the first quarter. Karley Johnson dug the Hogs out of the scoreless drought by knocking down one of two free throws, and then forced a travel on the other end of the floor.

Dauda then guided Arkansas out of its drought from the field with a second-chance layup and Spencer delivered an and-1 for the 3-point play. The Hogs trailed 24-12 with less than two minutes left in the quarter, but Arkansas finished the frame on a 6-0 run thanks to layups from Saylor Poffenbarger and Spencer, as well as a jumper from Poffenbarger at the buzzer. Alabama led, 24-20, after one quarter.

Dauda made one of two freebies to start the second half, but then the Hogs fell in a scoring drought for over four minutes. The Tide were in a drought of their own until getting going on a 5-0 scoring run. Keats had an answer with a jumper for Arkansas’ first field goal of the second half. At the media timeout taken at the 4:49 mark, Arkansas trailed, 29-23.

Out of the timeout, Spencer drove to the rack for a second-chance layup and then followed that up with another one to help the Hogs on a 6-0 run to creep within two. Alabama was held in a scoring drought for over four minutes until knocking down a triple, but Jenna Lawrence had an answer with a layup. The Hogs held the Tide to eight points in the second quarter, as Arkansas trailed by two, 32-30, at the half.

Makayla Daniels tied the game with a driving layup, and after Dauda’s fourth block of the day, Daniels charged all the way down the court for an and-1 to help the Hogs take the lead for the first time since the opening minutes of the game. Poffenbarger then logged a layup off a miss, and with the Hogs on a 7-0 run, Alabama took a timeout with 8:24 left in the third quarter and the Hogs up, 37-32. The run for the Hogs continued, as Spencer knocked down a triple and followed that up with a layup, while the Hogs were on a 12-0 run. Alabama scored its first basket of the second half three minutes into the quarter.

Daniels then drilled down a triple, but Alabama responded with a 3-point play. In the next sequence, Spencer came up with a layup, while Alabama answered with another layup. Alabama then knocked down a triple, as Arkansas was held in a scoring drought for nearly three minutes. With 2:50 left in the third quarter, Arkansas led, 47-42. With Alabama on a 7-0 run, Karley Johnson had a response with a layup, which started a 6-0 run, but Alabama answered with a triple. Dauda was then fouled with two seconds left in the quarter, and made the backend of the two freebies. Arkansas went into the fourth quarter up, 54-47.

Alabama came up with a jumper in their opening possession of the fourth quarter and off a steal, the Tide knocked down a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to two. That was the closest Alabama would come to the Hogs for the remainder of the game. Daniels and Spencer then delivered back-to-back layups and Alabama called a timeout with 8:12 left in the game and the Hogs ahead, 58-52.

Out of the break, Daniels knocked down a triple, which continued the Hogs on a 13-0 run, as Poffenbarger made a triple and Keats came up with an and-1. Arkansas led, 67-52, with less than five minutes to play in the game. Spencer then delivered two free throws to extend the run to a 15-0 run, but Alabama got out of the drought with a jumper. The Hogs outscored the Tide, 6-3, in the remaining three minutes of the game, as the Hogs got back in the winning column with a 77-59 victory at Alabama.

Hogs Game Highlights

• Spencer registered her second career 30-point game, logging a season-high 31 points. She added 14 rebounds, her first 10+ rebounding game of her career for her first double-double of the season, while also logging three assists

• Dauda followed up a great performance against Mississippi State with her best showing in her collegiate career, finishing with a near triple-double with eight points, 12 rebounds and 10 blocks. She also added five assists, two steals and did not commit a foul. Dauda is the first Hog in school history with a double-double in rebounds and blocks

• The 10 blocks by Dauda broke a school record that was previously held by Robyn Irwin, who swatted nine shots vs. SMSU on Dec. 19, 1988. Dauda is now the only Hog with 10+ blocks in a game

• Daniels registered 16 points, all in the second half, with three rebounds in nearly 26 minutes played

• Poffenbarger recorded nine points and 14 rebounds, finishing just one board shy of a double-double and 500 in her career

• Johnson played the most valuable minutes in her career, tallying 20.5 minutes and logging three points and two offensive rebounds

• Keats had seven points, playing 34.5 minutes on the floor

• Arkansas outrebounded Alabama, 52-35, while also pulling down 21 offensive rebounds

• The Hogs dominated in the paint with 40 points compared to Alabama’s 24, while logging 22 points off turnovers vs. Alabama’s nine

• This marked the 10th straight win in Tuscaloosa, which improved the Hogs record vs. Alabama to 27-16 in the all-time series

Next Game

Arkansas will have a bye on Thursday before hitting the road to Baton Rouge, La., to face the reigning NCAA National Champion LSU Tigers on Sunday, Jan. 21. The game is currently scheduled to tipoff at 4 p.m. on ESPN.

Another slow start, poor shooting doom Hogs Against Gators

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Arkansas got off to a slow start but used a 12-3 run to cut its deficit to 10 after a Joseph Pinion fastbreak with 6:56 left in the first half. However, Florida opened the second half with an 11-4 run to push its lead to 20 in a 90-68 Gators victory Saturday afternoon at Exactech Arena.

Florida, which leads the NCAA in rebounding, held a 48-31 advantage on the boards including 15 offensive boards to out-score Arkansas 17-8 on second-chance points.

Jeremiah Davenport scored all 13 of his points in the first half and he added three assists. Joseph Pinion and Layden Blocker each provided a spark at times.

Pinion scored 12 points, making two 3-pointers and going 4-of-4 at the free throw line. Blocker scored his career-high with 14 points, going 6-of-16 at the line with four rebounds.

Florida had five players score double figures with Riley Kugel leading the way with 20 points.

Arkansas returns to Bud Walton Arena for a pair of home games next week. The homestand starts Tuesday versus Texas A&M. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. and the game will be on SEC Network. Then, on Saturday, Arkansas will host South Carolina.

Razorbacks can’t quite get past Mississippi State in close loss

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas (13-5, 1-2 SEC) dropped a close game to Mississippi State (14-4, 1-2 SEC) Thursday night, 66-63, despite being down by as many as 15 in the first half. The Hogs outscored the Bulldogs 26-15 in the third quarter to trail by one, 48-47, going into the fourth quarter. Arkansas came up just short after having a chance to tie the game twice with less than one minute left in the game. Maryam Dauda had a career night with her first double-double behind a career-high 17 points and 13 boards with three blocks.

MSU got on the board first with a second-chance jumper after winning the tip. Arkansas came up empty on its first seven possessions, while MSU jumped out to a 10-0 lead. Searching for the first basket after starting the game 0-for-6 from the field, Arkansas took a timeout 4:20 into the action, down by 10. Out of the timeout, Dauda got the Hogs on the board with back-to-back jumpers.

MSU answered after Dauda’s second jumper, but Makayla Daniels and Carly Keats answered by knocking down triples. The Hogs trailed, 14-10, with 1:47 left in the first. After a Saylor Poffenbarger 3-pointer, the Hogs cut the deficit to one, but MSU responded off a third-chance opportunity. At the end of the first, the Bulldogs led, 16-13. After the Hogs took the timeout 4:20 into the game, Arkansas was able to close out the quarter on a 13-6 run.

The Bulldogs began the second quarter on an 11-0 run, while the Hogs started the frame 0-for-8 from the field. At the media timeout and still searching for its first points in the second quarter, Arkansas trailed, 27-13. Coming off the bench, Jenna Lawrence knocked down a triple, Arkansas’ first points of the frame, but MSU answered with four straight points, while Arkansas went into another scoring drought.

MSU then took a timeout with 2:23 left in the first half, as Arkansas trailed, 31-16. Lawrence then delivered a big block and the Hogs answered with a Poffenbarger triple. The Bulldogs got their first triple after starting the game 0-for-8, and then Lawrence knocked down her second 3-pointer of the game to cut the deficit to 12 with less than one minute in the half. The Hogs were able to end the quarter on a 9-6 run, trailing 34-22 at the half.

Poffenbarger knocked down her third triple of the game to open the second half and to cut the deficit to nine, but MSU went on a 4-0 run. Dauda then came up with an and-1 off a second-chance opportunity, as Arkansas trailed, 38-28. Dauda then knocked down two free throws, but MSU responded with a triple. Keats then knocked down a triple after Poffenbarger came up with a big offensive board, which led to a Samara Spencer layup as a part of a 5-0 run.

MSU then called timeout, as the Hogs trailed, 45-39, with 3:45 left in the third quarter. The run continued out of the timeout, as Keats knocked down her third triple of the game and Spencer drained one of her own. On an 11-0 run, Arkansas tied the game at 45 with 2:10 left in the third quarter at the media timeout. Arkansas committed three turnovers in less than two minutes out of the break, and the Bulldogs got out of their three-minute drought with layups, both off steals.

Spencer then delivered a layup to cut the deficit back to two. Daniels then made one of two free throws, as the Hogs trailed, 49-48, after the third quarter. The Hogs outscored the Bulldogs, 26-15 in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs struck first in the fourth quarter with a layup, but Dauda had a response with a layup to earn her first career double-double. MSU knocked down two free throws, but Spencer took it to the lane for a layup to tally double digits in scoring. MSU had an answer with an and-1, converting the three-point play. At the media timeout taken at 4:37, the game was tied at 55.

Out of the break, MSU logged a basket, but the Hogs tied it up with a Dauda layup. Spencer then knocked down two free throws to help the Hogs take its first lead of the game with 3:30 left in the game. MSU came up with a layup, but Dauda had a response with a layup. The Bulldogs converted a three-point play to retake the lead, 62-61, with 2:31 left in the game. MSU came up with a second-chance layup, and after Arkansas called a timeout, MSU led 64-61 with 56 seconds left in the contest.

The Bulldogs were unable to come up with a score to extend their cushion, but rather fouled, which sent Dauda to the line. She knocked down two free throws, as Arkansas trailed, 64-63, with 18.7 seconds left in the game. The Hogs fouled, and MSU knocked down the first shot, but missed the second.

Poffenbarger got the rebound and Arkansas called a timeout, down, 65-63, with 15.6 seconds left in the game. Spencer drove to the layup but was blocked, and the ball touched her leg, which turned the ball over to MSU. The Hogs fouled for one last chance, as MSU made one of two free throws to defeat the Hogs, 66-63.

Hogs Highlights

• Dauda logged her first career double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds, tallying seven of her rebounds in the first half. She also logged two assists and three blocks in nearly 38 minutes on the court

• Spencer logged 13 points, all in the second half. She also registered four boards and six assists

• Poffenbarger played all 40 minutes for the second time this season, recording nine points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks

• Also, Poffenbarger is ninth in school history for total rebounds in a single season with 230

• Keats logged her third straight double-digit scoring game, fourth this season, behind 12 points in 37 minutes

• Daniels achieved another milestone in her career, getting her 500th career rebound in the first quarter. She finished with six points and six rebounds, while now becoming the only Hog to have logged 1,600 points, 500 rebounds, 300 assists and 200 steals in their career

• Lawrence provided a big spark off the bench with six points, logging two 3-pointers for the first time of her career, along with two rebounds and one block. She was also the only Hog with positive +/- with +8

• Arkansas had 12 second chance points compared to MSU’s 10

The Hogs will head to Tuscaloosa this weekend to face Alabama for the first of two times during the regular season. Arkansas and the Crimson Tide will play at Coleman Coliseum on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. on SEC Network.
