Hogs manage split with Texas A&M in first SEC series loss of season

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — No. 2 Arkansas (34-7, 13-5 SEC) split Friday’s series-concluding doubleheader against Texas A&M (23-16, 8-10 SEC) at Baum-Walker Stadium, winning the first game of the day, 11-5, before dropping the nightcap, 9-2, to suffer its first SEC home weekend series loss since the 2022 campaign.

The loss in Friday’s finale snapped the Razorbacks’ streak of 12 consecutive SEC home weekend series wins. Arkansas won all five of its SEC weekend series at Baum-Walker Stadium in both 2023 and 2024, and won each of its first two SEC home weekend series to begin the 2025 campaign before dropping this weekend’s three-game set against Texas A&M.

Arkansas concludes its six-game homestand with a double midweek series against in-state opponent Little Rock on Tuesday and Wednesday.

First pitch in the series opener between the Hogs and Trojans is 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on SEC Network+.

Game 1: Arkansas 11, Texas A&M 5

Ben Bybee (3.0 IP, 1 R, 4 SO) and Gabe Gaeckle (5.2 IP, 1 R, 8 SO) combined for 8.2 innings of two-run ball with 12 strikeouts in relief Gage Wood, who allowed three runs on three hits and a walk over 0.1 innings of work on the mound in his first outing since Feb. 23, to lead Arkansas to an 11-5 win against Texas A&M in game one of Friday’s twin bill.

Led by three-hit games from Wehiwa Aloy (3-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) and Kuhio Aloy (3-for-4, RBI), the Razorbacks evened the series at one game apiece with an 11-run outburst against the Aggies.

Justin Thomas Jr. clobbered a pair of home runs, his first career multi-homer game, and finished with a team-leading three RBI, as did Brent Iredale (1-for-3, 2B, 3 RBI).

Wehiwa Aloy’s solo blast in the third was his fourth home run in as many games as well as his team-leading 15th of the season.

The Razorback shortstop eclipsed his single-season career high of 14 homers, which he accomplished in both his 2023 and 2024 campaigns as a freshman at Sacramento State (14) and as a sophomore at Arkansas (14), respectively.

Gaeckle, meanwhile, made his first relief appearance of the season and earned the win to improve to 3-1. The right-hander matched his career highs in both innings pitched (5.2) and strikeouts (8) in his stellar outing on the mound.

Game 2: Texas A&M 9, Arkansas 2

Texas A&M blitzed Arkansas in the rubber match with a pair of three-run innings late in the ballgame to pull out a 9-2 win in the nightcap of Friday’s doubleheader and secure the weekend series win.

Jace LaViolette homered twice and finished with a game-high four runs scored and three RBI to power the Aggies past the Razorbacks in the series finale.

Landon Beidelschies, starting on short rest, turned in four innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts to put the Hogs in good position to secure its 13th consecutive SEC home weekend series win.

The Razorback bullpen, however, would falter for seemingly the first time all season, allowing eight runs after the left-hander departed from the ballgame.

Despite multi-hit efforts from Charles Davalan (2-for-5), Wehiwa Aloy (2-for-5, 2B), Brent Iredale (2-for-4) and Ryder Helfrick (2-for-3, 2B), the Hogs could not capitalize on their opportunities.

Arkansas left 10 runners on and went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position to seal its fate, snapping its streak of 12 consecutive SEC home weekend series wins.

Aloy’s strong showing on offense, defense, not enough for Hogs against Aggies

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Wehiwa Aloy continued to amaze with his play on both sides of the baseball, swatting his team-leading 14th home run of the season and displaying his dazzling defense at shortstop, but No. 2 Arkansas (33-6, 12-4 SEC) dropped the series opener against Texas A&M (22-15, 7-9 SEC), 7-4, Thursday night at Baum-Walker Stadium.

In anticipation of inclement weather over the weekend, the Razorbacks and Aggies will conclude their series with two games Friday.

First pitch in tomorrow’s twin bill is set for 2 p.m. on SEC Network+, while Friday’s second game, which will also stream on SEC Network+, is slated to begin approximately an hour after the completion of the first game.

Aloy finished 2-for-4 with a homer, his third in as many games, and two RBI in Thursday night’s series-opening loss. His multi-hit performance was his team-leading 21st of the season and raised his slash line to .372/.458/.720 on the year.

The Razorback shortstop made a remarkable jump throw from deep in the hole to end the top of the second inning before stepping up to the plate in the bottom of the third and clobbering a 401-foot game-tying two-run home run.

Texas A&M tagged Arkansas starting pitcher Zach Root, who took the loss to fall to 5-2 on the year, for six runs (five earned) on seven hits and three walks with six strikeouts in four innings.

The Aggies scored four runs over the first and second inning before breaking a 4-4 tie with two runs in the top half of the fifth to pull away from the Razorbacks.

In relief of Root, Dylan Carter (4.0 IP, 4 SO) and Christian Foutch (1.0 IP, 1 R, 2 SO) combined for five innings of one-run ball.

Despite their efforts, the Razorbacks had no answer for Aggie reliever Weston Moss, who spun five shutout frames.

Moss took over for Texas A&M starter Ryan Prager, who allowed four runs on six hits and one free pass, and silenced the Arkansas offense over the game’s final six innings.

The Hogs put runners on first and second in both the seventh and ninth but failed to capitalize and, ultimately, suffered a 7-4 series-opening loss at the hands of the Aggies.

Offensively, Charles Davalan (2-for-4, 2B) and Justin Thomas Jr. (2-for-3) also collected multi-hit performances Thursday night.

Kuhio Aloy, meanwhile, tallied an RBI double in the first inning and raised his season slash line to .384/.471/.692.
