Early Recognition For Blaine Knight
Razorback junior right-hander Blaine Knight was named a Louisville Slugger Preseason Third Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball Magazine back in December.

Knight was one of Arkansas’ top arms in 2017, making 16 starts and compiling a 3.28 ERA in 90.2 innings pitched, the second-lowest ERA among Arkansas starting pitchers.

His eight wins were good for tops on the team and were the most by an Arkansas pitcher since Chris Oliver had eight in 2014.

Koch Named Preseason All-American
Razorback junior catcher Grant Koch was named a Preseason Third Team All-American by D1Baseball.com in January.

The Hog backstop was a constant in the lineup last year as he started in nearly every game (63 games), and hit .264 with a career-best 13 home runs and 42 RBIs.

His home run total was the seventh most in the conference, most among catchers, and most by a Razorback catcher in the Dave Van Horn era.

Arkansas Earns Top 10 Preseason Rankings In All National Polls
With the release of the preseason poll from the National College Baseball Writers Association, Arkansas will begin the 2018 season ranked in the top 10 of all the major national polls.

The NCBWA placed the Hogs at No. 6 in this week’s poll, the same placement as the Perfect Game poll, which is also the lowest of the six polls.

Collegiate Baseball Magazine ranked the Razorbacks at No. 3, their highest since they were ranked No. 1 in the preseason in 2013.

The Dark Knight Returns To The Mound
Junior right-hander Blaine Knight will get the call to be the Opening Day starting pitcher Friday against Bucknell.

This is the seventh time in the last eight years that a right-hander will be the Opening Day starter for the Hogs and 12th under Van Horn.

Of the last 15 Opening Day starters, 13 have been drafted. This is the second-straight year that Knight has been tabbed as the Opening Day starter and third-straight opening weekend that he’s been part of the rotation.

High Marks In Preseason SEC Poll
The Razorbacks were picked by the league’s head coaches to win the Western Division and finish second overall.

In the 27th annual preseason SEC poll, the Hogs picked up 12 of the 14 votes to win the division and one vote to take the league overall.

Four Hogs Earn Preseason All-SEC Marks
Arkansas was one of two schools (Florida) to have four or more players earn a spot on either Preseason All-SEC team.

Catcher Grant Koch led all Razorbacks as the lone first-team player, followed by Blaine Knight, Jax Biggers, and Dominic Fletcher, who make up the second team.

Fletcher Returns To Captain Outfield After Banner Freshman Season
After a year where he could be argued as the best hitting freshman in the SEC, centerfielder Dominic Fletcher is back for his sophomore year with the Hogs.

Fletcher was named a freshman All-American by the NCBWA and Baseball America in 2017 after hitting .291 with 64 hits, 12 home runs, and 37 RBIs.

His 12 long balls were the second most by a Razorback freshman in a season in school history trailing only Zack Cox, who hit 13 in 2009.

In last year’s season opener, Fletcher became the first Arkansas freshman to homer in his Razorback debut since Andy Wilkins in 2008.

Against the Field
The Razorbacks own a combined 13-5 record against this weekend’s opponents at the Mary Nutter: Grand Canyon (0-1), Utah (3-3), Weber State (1-0), Loyola Marymount (6-1) and Fordham (3-0). Arkansas and LMU played last year at the MNCC; the Razorbacks won, 15-2, in five innings.

This weekend’s trip to Palm Springs marks a trip home for five Razorbacks. Ashley Diaz (South El Monte), Kayla Green (Temecula), Aly Manzo (Roseville), Hannah McEwen (San Diego) and Autumn Storms (Temecula) all hail from the Golden State.

Who’s Back?
The Razorbacks return three players—A.J. Belans, Autumn Buczek and Ashley Diaz—that started all 55 games in 2017. Overall, Arkansas welcomes back 18 letterwinners and nine starters. Belans was named to the All-SEC Second Team while sophomore Autumn Storms was an All-SEC and All-South Region performer.

Starting Point
In the SEC preseason coaches’ poll, Arkansas was picked to finish 10th in the league; the team had been picked 13th in the previous two seasons. The Razorbacks also start the year receiving votes in the NFCA and USA Softball polls.

Schultz claims Arkansas’ first-ever diving title

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — After staging a monumental comeback in the preliminary round of the one-meter springboard Wednesday afternoon, freshman Brooke Schultz edged into the finals, where the Fayetteville native coasted to an SEC one-meter springboard title with a Texas A&M pool record of 363.45.

Schultz was the third Razorback to qualify for the afternoon finals, but it took an incredible comeback in prelims to clinch her berth.

After scoring a 22.10 in her first dive of the prelims, Schultz found herself in last to begin the event.

Schultz would average 52.68 points on her final five dives to turn in a prelim score of 285.50, placing seventh.

In the finals, Schultz paced the field the entire six dives, but her second and fourth dive of 72.00 and 70.50, created separation from the pack, allowing her to become the first SEC diving champion in school history.

It is Arkansas’ fifth individual SEC title in school history, as Yi-Ting Siow took home the 200-yard breaststroke title in 2010 and 2011, while Nicola Atkinson won the 1500-meter freestyle and the 200-meter butterfly in 1992.

Of the eight divers who qualified for finals, Arkansas was the only school to claim multiple spots, as three of its five athletes clinched their place, including two freshmen.

Freshmen Maha Amer led the way in the prelims for Arkansas, scoring a then-career-best 308.40 to qualify third.

Amer would top her career best that she set earlier in the day, scoring a 322.35 to finish fourth overall in her championship debut. Senior Nicole Gillis scored a 286.05 to place sixth in prelims.

Gillis and Amer went back and forth in the finals, but Gillis would pull ahead on the final dive with a score of 323.85 to earn a third-place showing, becoming the second Razorback to earn a podium finish in the event.

In the first swimming event of the championships, senior Sydney Angell, junior Madison Strathman, senior Olivia Weekley and junior Kiera Michailoff-Russell combined to finish 11th in the 200 medley relay in a season-best 1:40.05.

The time ranks fifth on Arkansas’ all-time performer’s list.

In the final event of day one, the quartet of freshman Ayumi Macias and seniors Chelsea Tatlow, Jessie Garrison and Chloe Hannam was disqualified in the 800 free relay.

Action from College Station will start back on Thursday at 10 a.m. with the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley and the 50 freestyle prelims.

7. LSU – 116

Eighth-ranked Hogs start road stretch in St. Louis

FAYETTEVILLE — Eighth-ranked Arkansas hits the road for the fourth time this season for the Mardi Gras Invitational quad meet this Friday in St. Louis, Missouri.

“We’re just trying to get better every weekend,” said coach Mark Cook. “It’s just a matter of staying consistent and staying healthy. It’s going to be a different competition being on the podium, but it simulates SEC competition.”

The Razorbacks are pitted against No. 21 George Washington and will have rematches against No. 4 LSU and No. 20 Missouri.

It will be Arkansas’ first regular season quad meet since 2015 when the Razorbacks placed third at the Metroplex Challenge in 2015.

How They Compare (Season Averages)
Vault: LSU- 49.292, GWU- 49.071, Arkansas- 48.996, Missouri- 48.995
Bars: LSU- 49.350, Arkansas- 49.058, Missouri- 48.915, GWU- 48.763
Beam: Arkansas- 49.200, LSU- 49.200, Missouri- 48.765, GWU- 48.713
Floor: LSU- 49.425, Arkansas- 49.129, GWU- 49.008, Missouri- 48.915
Total: LSU- 197.267, Arkansas- 196.383, Missouri- 195.590, GWU- 195.554

The matchup is Arkansas’ first non-conference meet of the season, after competing in six straight conference meets to being the season.

The Razorbacks were the only school in the conference to compete against only Southeastern Conference foes heading into this weekend.

Since Arkansas’ season opener at LSU, the Razorbacks have posted five straight scores over 196, its third longest stretch in school history, and come into the meet tying its highest ranking of the season at No. 8.

In last Friday’s meet against Auburn, the Razorbacks set a new season high, and its second highest score in history, on the bars with a 49.450.

The score was led with four 9.900’s, including one from freshman Sarah Shaffer. Shaffer is the only freshman in the SEC to record multiple 9.900’s in each of the last two weeks with four of her last six events competed tallying scores of 9.900.

“This team is really good on that event,” said Cook. “I was happy to see them dialed, but we’re strong on all four events and we just have to stay balanced.

Despite being shorthanded on vault, sophomore Hailey Garner stepped in and secured a solid score for the Razorbacks on the event, after not competing in it for over two years. The sophomore posted a 9.700 on vault, as well as a 9.900 on bars and a 9.800 on floor.

“That’s the kid I saw when I recruited her several years ago,” said Cook. “I told her at the meet ‘this is where you should be, you should be an all-arounder in this program’. She really shined, and for her she just needs to make those improvements on a consistent basis. She’s doing a great job right now.”

The meet is scheduled to being at 6:30 p.m. Friday, and will be streamed live on FloGymnastics (Subscription required).
