Kjerstad’s homer lifts Hogs to win in pitching duel
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — A scoreless outing by starting pitcher Kacey Murphy and a fifth inning home run by Heston Kjerstad helped third-ranked Arkansas defeat Arizona, 1-0, Wednesday night in San Diego.
Murphy, making his first appearance of the 2018 season, faced down a tough Arizona lineup to throw six scoreless innings with just one hit allowed, one walk, and six strikeouts on 73 pitches.
It continues a string of strong outings by the junior dating back to last season where he started on two consecutive days in the NCAA Fayetteville Regional, as well as throwing a complete seven innings in the SEC Tournament semifinals.
As for Kjerstad, the freshman carried over his success from opening weekend, hitting the solo home run on a night when offenses were stymied by both pitching staffs.
Kjerstad finished the game 1-for-3 as his hit was one of just six combined on the night between both teams.
Kjerstad’s homer continued his hitting streak to open the year, making it four-straight games with at least one base hit. He also continues to lead the team with a .583 average and only has one strikeout in 12 at-bats.
The 1-0 win for the Hogs was a rare feat as it was the first of its kind since April 22, 2016 in a 10-inning win over Kentucky.
It was also the 599th win for Dave Van Horn as Arkansas’ head coach. With one more victory, he will join an exclusive club as one of just three current head coaches in the SEC with 600 or more wins at their current school (Tim Corbin – Vanderbilt; Mike Bianco – Ole Miss).
Moments That Mattered
Murphy and Arizona starter Randy Labaut matched each other pitch for pitch in the early goings as both hurlers had three or more strikeouts after the first three innings.
Combined, both teams only managed one base runner over the first three frames, which came from Arizona in the second on a one out walk.
Arkansas used clean defense throughout the game, including using a double play in the second inning to quell the first baserunner, followed by a heads up play by Carson Shaddy in the fourth after an Arizona baserunning error.
On that play, Arizona centerfielder Cal Stevenson took a wide turn at third base after an Alfonso Rivas single and was caught off the bag by Shaddy, who then flipped the ball to Hunter Wilson covering to help the Razorbacks escape the fourth unscathed.
That play was followed by the Kjerstad homer in the next inning to break the scoreless draw.
Kjerstad sent the first pitch he saw in the fifth over the left-centerfield wall, one of just three hits allowed over seven innings by Labaut. Kjerstad is the eighth different Razorback to hit a home run this season.
Arkansas almost put a heavy pad on its lead in the ninth as Jared Gates nearly hit a two-out grand slam, but like many of the hard hit balls on Wednesday night, it died just feet from the outfield wall.
Murphy pitched through the sixth inning before giving way to the Arkansas bullpen. Redshirt sophomore Cody Scroggins started the seventh inning and struck out the first two batters he faced before loading the bases on a single and two-straight walks.
Sophomore Matt Cronin was called after Scroggins to try and get the final out and hold Arkansas’ one-run lead.
He was able to do that after getting pinch hitter Seve Romo to ground back to the mound, leaving the bases loaded full of Wildcats. Cronin went on to finish the game and earn his first save of the year as he retired eight of Arizona’s final nine batters.
Razorback Quotables
“I didn’t expect a 1-0 ballgame. I figured it would be well pitched. They’re (Arizona) such a fundamental team that if they don’t make mistakes, they’re going to be hard to beat. Lucky for us, we pitched extremely well and we made the plays we needed to make. Our pitching staff did a great job and got out of a couple jams. We got one big swing and scored a run early. We put together a few good innings, but couldn’t get the big hit. I thought we got one in the ninth on the swing from (Jared) Gates. It would have been four runs, but the ball just stopped. I guess they call that the ‘marine layer.’ It’s a good win for us and now we’ll get a good workout in tomorrow and get ready for this weekend.” — Coach Dave Van Horn on the win over Arizona
“He’s got some pop, obviously, and he’s got opposite field power. That’s something that’s hard to teach. It’s a gift. He’s a special player and a special kid. He’s been good for us since the day he got to school, so I’m excited about him and his future.” — Van Horn on Heston Kjerstad’s home run
“I knew that lefty (Labaut) had been pounding the zone the whole game, so I was just looking for something up I could drive. This is a good win for us and it shows our pitching staff did an outstanding job. To give up two hits to their whole lineup was impressive. They kept us in the game in the whole time.” — Heston Kjerstad on his fifth inning home run

• Saturday’s 32-4 win over Bucknell was the largest run output by an Arkansas team since 2010 (32 vs. Saint Louis) and was one run shy of the school record for runs in a game (33 vs. Missouri Southern, 1984).
• As a team, Arkansas hit eight home runs last weekend, the most in the SEC and second-most in the nation.
• Seven different Razorbacks hit a home run in last week’s opening series. Only Carson Shaddy hit more than one as he went deep in games one and two.
• Freshman Heston Kjerstad had a stellar opening weekend, starting in left field all three games and hitting an SEC-leading .667 with multi-hit performances on Friday and Saturday.
• Shaddy’s four-RBI performance on Opening Day was the most by a Razorback since Blake Parker plated four against Dallas Baptist in 2005.
Kacey Murphy Set To Make First Start of 2018
Razorback junior left-hander Kacey Murphy will get the nod for the start against Arizona Wednesday night.
Murphy was a key hurler for the Hogs in 2017 as he made 10 starts in 19 appearances to compile a career-best 3.65 ERA over 49.1 innings. His 68 strikeouts were third-best on the team and he was one of only two Hog pitchers to throw a complete game during the season.
That complete game came in the SEC Tournament semifinals where he shut down the top-seeded Florida Gators in seven innings, allowing just two hits and striking out eight.
Soooieville Sluggers Year Two?
In 2017, Arkansas crushed an SEC-best 83 home runs, the most home runs by a Razorback team since 2010.
The Hogs picked up where they left off during opening weekend last week, hitting eight homers, including six in Saturday’s 32-4 victory over Bucknell.
Arkansas currently leads all SEC teams in home runs and is tops in the nation after week one.
Shaddy Goes All Out To Earn SEC Player Of The Week
Carson Shaddy was the Razorbacks’ most efficient hitter during the season’s first weekend as he totaled an SEC-leading nine RBIs in 12 plate appearances.
He was only 4-for-7 (.571) at the plate, but drew four walks to build up a .750 on-base percentage, which is third best in the league.
On Opening Day, Shaddy started 2018 off with a bang, clubbing four RBIs as part of a 1-for-2 day with a home run. The four RBIs were the most for a Razorback on Opening Day since Blake Parker drove in four in 2005 against Dallas Baptist.
He finished the weekend with a .571/.750/1.571 slash line, which are all top-10 totals in the SEC.
His slugging percentage is good for second in the conference and he was one of eight players in the league to hit two homers in the first three games.
Hogs Plate 49 Runs On Bucknell
Arkansas cruised to a sweep over Bucknell on opening weekend. While the three wins were impressive enough, it was the amount of runs that was astounding.
Forty-nine Razorback runs crossed the plate combined over the three games including 32 in Saturday’s game two. The 49 runs is the most in the first three games of a season since 1997.
The sweep is the team’s fifth-straight dating back to 2014, while the 32 runs on Saturday was just one less than the school record for runs scored in a single-game (1984).

Hogs go cold in second half, fall to Kentucky, 87-72
FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas could not hold on to its early lead Tuesday night, as the the Razorbacks fell to the Kentucky Wildcats, 87-72, in Bud Walton Arena.
The Razorbacks came out swinging.
Arkansas used an 11-0 run right out of the gate to go up early on the Wildcats. The Razorbacks hit their first two 3-point attempts to take a 6-0 lead, before needing a little help on the offensive glass from senior forward Dustin Thomas.
Thomas tied his career high in offensive boards just in the first three minutes of the game with four, as the Razorbacks would score five early second chance points off of his rebounds.
Kentucky clawed back in it to eventually take the lead, but Arkansas tied it at half, 43-43, thanks for senior guard Daryl Macon, who hit a last second three.
Macon led the Razorbacks at the break with 14 points, going 4-of-7 from deep.
With 13 minutes and 16 seconds left in the game, Arkansas led 61-56 after a pull-up 3 in transition by Anton Beard.
The Wildcats would go on a 25-5 run over the next eight-plus minutes to take their largest lead of the night at 81-66. A big reason for that run was Arkansas’ inability to create anything on the offensive end.
The Razorbacks went seven minutes and 43 seconds without a basket. Arkansas missed 10 of its last 12 shots of the game, including a streak of seven straight.
Kentucky went on to win 87-72, as the Razorbacks fall to 19-9 overall this season, 8-7 in SEC play.

Beard scored 13 for Arkansas and had a team-high five assists.
