Wichita State knocks off Razorbacks in pitchers’ duel
WICHITA, Kan. — Senior Tori Cooper tallied her second multi-hit effort of the season but Arkansas stranded eight runners on base Tuesday afternoon in a 1-0 loss at Wichita State.
Freshman Mary Haff was the tough-luck losing pitcher, surrendering a solo home run in the second inning as the game’s only score.
The Razorbacks will carry a 16-2 record in the weekend’s SEC opener at No. 11 Georgia.
Arkansas and Wichita State were scheduled to play a doubleheader but the head coaches agreed to cancel game two due to windy conditions—gusts exceeding 40 miles per hours—and dropping temperatures.

FINAL: Wichita State 1, Arkansas 0 | Box Score
The Razorbacks loaded the bases in the top of the first inning, drawing a pair of walks sandwiched between an infield single off the bat of freshman Hannah McEwen. However, Wichita State starter Bailey Lange retired the next three and got out of the jam with a pop up to short.
After Haff retired the top of the Shockers’ lineup in order, Cooper led off the second with the first of her two hits on the day. Arkansas had two on when a groundout off the pitcher allowed both runners to move into scoring position. Lange responded with a pair of strikeouts to keep the Razorbacks off the scoreboard.
Haff struck out the first two hitters she faced in the home half of the second but Wichita State broke through in the next at-bat with a solo home run to right center.
Arkansas got a one-out single from junior Ashley Diaz in the third but put together another bases-loaded threat in the top of the fourth.
With the bases full of Razorbacks, McEwen was robbed of a would-be hit with a quick-reaction catch at third and flip to second for the frame-ending double play.
Sophomore Autumn Storms came in to relieve Haff in the fourth and kept Wichita State off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game but Lange retired the final 10 hitters she faced to hand Arkansas its’ first shutout loss of the season.

Arkansas coach Mike Anderson met with the media just prior to the team’s departure Tuesday for St. Louis and the SEC Tournament.
Barford, Macon, Gafford earn All-SEC honors
FAYETTEVILLE — For the ninth time since joining the SEC, Arkansas placed three players on the postseason SEC teams as voted on by the league head coaches.
Senior guard Jaylen Barford earned first team All-SEC honors, senior guard Daryl Macon was named second team All-SEC and freshman forward Daniel Gafford was selected to the SEC All-Freshman team.
Just last week, Macon and Barford became the sixth and seventh players in program history to eclipse the 1,000 career points mark in just two years.
Both guards surpassed the milestone on Arkansas’ Senior Night and have amassed 1,014 points to sit tied for 40th in school history on the all-time scoring list.
Barford proved to be one of the most prolific scores in the country as a senior, ranking third in the league in scoring average at 17.9 points per game.
He recorded 12 games of 20-plus points and joins Macon as the only players in the league to rank in the top 10 in three-point field goal percentage (2nd), scoring average (3rd) and field goal percentage (6th).
Barford has turned into a sharpshooter from long range, hitting three-plus three-pointers 15 times this season after doing so just twice last year.
He scored a career-high 28 points in two different games, both coming against SEC teams that finished in the top three of the league standings.
Macon earns second team All-SEC honors after being named SEC Player of the Week three times during his senior season. He became the first player in program history to earn the honor three times in a season and four times in a career.
Macon has 17 games of 20-plus points in his career and joined Corliss Williamson as the only Razorbacks to record seven straight 20-point games since Arkansas joined the SEC.
He currently leads the league in free throw percentage and three-point field goal percentage and is one of the most clutch shooters in the league, making 30-of-31 free throw attempts in the final minute and overtime of games this season.
A three-time SEC Freshman of the Week honoree, Daniel Gafford has been a force for Arkansas in the paint all season.
He joined former Razorbacks and current #ProHogs Bobby Portis and Patrick Beverley as the only Razorbacks to be earn the weekly conference honor three times in a season.
In SEC play this year, Gafford averaged 12.7 points and 6.2 rebounds per contest, finishing in double figures 13 times.
He currently ranks sixth in the country among freshmen in field goal percentage thanks to 68 dunks on the year, the most by any player at Arkansas during the Mike Anderson era.
Gafford has more slams than six teams in the SEC and has matched his dunk total with 68 blocks on the other end of the court.
The big man has recorded three-plus blocks in a game 12 times this season, including five or more in four different contests.
The SEC Tournament
As the No. 6 seed in this week’s SEC Tournament, Arkansas has earned a bye and will open play Thursday at approximately 8:30 p.m. at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.
The Razorbacks will take on the winner of No. 11 seed South Carolina versus No. 14 seed Ole Miss.
Arkansas, Western Kentucky set games in football, basketball
FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas and Conference USA member Western Kentucky have scheduled a future football game and a home-and-home men’s basketball series.
In football, the Hogs will host the Hilltoppers on Nov. 9, 2019, while the men’s basketball team will host Western Kentucky during the 2018-19 season at a date to be announced later, followed by a trip to Bowling Green, Kentucky, during the 2019-20 campaign.
In football, Arkansas and Western Kentucky will meet for the first time in program history, while the men’s basketball programs have a history that dates back to the 1930’s.
On the hardwood, the Razorbacks have a 4-2 lead in the all-time series, including four straight wins in Central Arkansas from 1936-1945.
The addition of the Western Kentucky game completes the 2019 non-conference football schedule for the Razorbacks.
