Razorbacks beat Missouri in SEC home opener

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas scored all three of their runs in the second and freshman Mary Haff registered her ninth complete-game performance of the season in Friday’s 3-1 win over Missouri.

Senior Autumn Buczek delivered the big blow with a two-out, two-run triple.

With the win, Arkansas picked up its first conference win of the season and improves to 24-5 overall.

The team’s SEC home opener was played in front of 1,248 fans at Bogle Park, marking the sixth-largest home attendance in program history.

The Razorbacks are now 15-0 on their home field this season.

Game two of this weekend’s series against Missouri is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.

Arkansas is in the midst of a 13-game home stand that will conclude next weekend when the team hosts Mississippi State at Bogle Park.

Missouri (18-16, 1-6 SEC) stranded three runners on base in its first two trips to the plate but were kept off the scoreboard.

The Razorbacks took advantage of a lead-off walk to Aly Manzo to start the bottom of the second inning and had runners on first and second after a base hit by Loren Krzysko.

Haydi Bugarin opened the scoring with an RBI single through the left side that allowed pinch runner Keely Edwards to score from second base.

A Missouri error extended the inning and Buczek came through with her eighth-career triple that plated a pair of unearned runs for the Razorbacks.

With the three-base hit, Buczek moves into a tie for fifth with Chloe Oprzedek (2011-14) on the program’s all-time list.

The visitors got one of those runs back in the top of the third with a two-out RBI single to left just over the glove of Buczek at shortstop.

From that point, however, Haff retired 12 of the last 13 hitters she faced. The lone Missouri base runner in that stretch was a walk to lead off the sixth but was erased on a ‘strike ‘em out, throw ‘em out’ double play.

From her catcher’s position, freshman Kayla Green has now thrown out an SEC-leading 10 base runners attempting to steal.

Still working with the two-run lead, Haff worked a perfect seventh inning to secure her 14th win of the season and give the Razorbacks their third-consecutive win over Missouri. Friday’s game marked Haff’s 10th outing with at least seven strikeouts.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Arkansas dropped its second match of the week on Friday, opening the conference weekend with a 5-2 loss to South Carolina.

For the sixth-straight match, the Razorbacks (9-10, 2-5 SEC) set themselves back, dropping the doubles point to give the Gamecocks the early 1-0 lead.

Arkansas held the early advantage as Oscar Mesquida and Adam Sanjurjo led Gabriel Friedrich and Thomas Mayronne 3-2 on court one, while brothers Pedro and Jose Alonso led Paul Jubb and Wood Benton 3-2 on court three.

Mesquida and Sanjurjo would go on to claim the top doubles spot 6-3, but not before South Carolina grabbed the second court, as Yancy Dennis and Harrison O’Keefe defeated Jose Salazar and Alex Reco 6-3.

It would come down to court three, where the Alonso’s would fall 7-6 (7-0) to give the doubles point to USC.

In singles, the Gamecocks would take three straight courts in two sets to go up 4-0 and claim the win.

Mesquida fell first to Jubb 6-1, 6-3, while Reco dropped second to O’Keefe 6-1, 6-2.

USC would clinch the match on court three, as Arkansas freshman Josh Howard-Tripp lost Dennis 6-0, 6-4.

After the clinch, Arkansas would take two of the final three courts, as Pedro Alonso defeated Thomas Mayronne 6-1, 6-3 and No. 65 Salazar defeated No. 46 Friedrich 4-6, 7-6, 10-5 to give Salazar his team-high fifth ranked win of the season.

Between the two wins, Jose Alonso would fall to Benton at the No. 6 spot 6-4, 6-1.

The Razorbacks close out the road trip with a match in Gainesville, Florida, on Sunday, as Arkansas takes on the No. 9 Florida Gators at 11 a.m. CT.

Arkansas falls to No. 11 Ole Miss at home Friday

FAYETTEVILLE — No. 11 Ole Miss defeated No. 46 Arkansas 4-1 on Friday night at George M. Billingsley Tennis Center.

The Rebels (12-5, 3-4 Southeastern Conference) won the doubles point and earned three singles victories for the team win.

In singles, Ole Miss stretched its lead to 3-0 with victories at the top two spots before sophomore Natsuho Arakawa beat No. 82 Tea Jandric 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 for the Razorbacks’ (5-10, 1-5 SEC) solo win.

The Rebels clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-4 win from Anna Vrbenska at No. 5.

At the clinch, Razorbacks Martina Zerulo led 6-1, 6-5 at No. 6 and Mia Jurasic was up 3-2 in the third set at No. 3.

The Razorbacks will return to action at 1 p.m. CT Sunday to host No. 24 Mississippi State.

Sullins places third as outdoor season officially underway

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas junior Erich Sullins officially opened the 2018 men’s track and field outdoor season with a third-place finish in the hammer throw at the Arkansas Spring Invitational at John McDonnell Field on Friday.

Sullins, the program and meet record-holder, improved with each attempt in the second flight and finished with a throw of 58.12m/190-08 feet to advance to the finals.

The top nine competitors advanced to the finals with three additional throws. Sullivan improved on his final throw with a 58.49m/191-10 feet effort but was unable to move up in the standings.

Sullins opened the day throwing 54.89m/180-1 feet in his first attempt in the prelims. He improved with a throw of 57.03m/187-1 feet followed by 58.12m/190-08 feet.

Tickets for the Arkansas Spring Invitational are $5 for adults with free admission for fans 17 years and younger.

Tickets are sold at the northwest entrance (corner of Razorback Rd and Meadow St) of John McDonnell Field.

Saturday’s field events start at 11:30 a.m. with running events beginning at 3 p.m.

Indoor All-Americans Kenzo Cotton, Obi Igbokwe, Gabe Moore, Kemar Mowatt and Jamarco Stephen are all scheduled to compete Saturday.

During the indoor season, Cotton secured his first individual SEC crown by winning the program’s first-ever title at 60 meters.

Mowatt, the school-record holder in the 400-meter hurdles, will open his outdoor season with a run through the 110-meter hurdles.

This weekend’s 15-team field will include conference mate Missouri and Big 12 foes No. 10 Kansas and Oklahoma State.

The Arkansas Spring Invitational is the first of four outdoor home meets for the Razorbacks who are also set to host the John McDonnell Invitational (April 13-14), National Relay Championships (April 27-28) and Arkansas Twilight (May 4).

Razorbacks ready for SEC Championship in St. Louis

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas travels to St. Louis, Missouri on Saturday for the Southeastern Conference Championships.

The Razorbacks are the fifth seed, and will compete in the first session of tomorrow’s championships, beginning at 2 p.m.

“We’ve been really, really, strong on three events,” said assistant coach Jaime Armbrust. “We’re working on some depth on vault, but the other three events have picked up the slack. We have some really strong competitors. They go in and compete hard and with the mindset to compete to win.”

As the fifth seed, Arkansas is the highest seed in its session and will compete in Olympic order at the championships for the first time in program history.

The Razorbacks will go up against Georgia, Auburn and Missouri in its session, before the final session begins at 6 p.m.

The Razorbacks are one week removed from its record performance from the Arkansas Tri meet against Denver and Iowa State where they posted a 197.300.

It’s the second time in three meets that Arkansas has set a new team high record, after tallying a 197.275 against Arizona March 2.

“We’re going in and want to focus on our team and ourselves,” said Armbrust. “We don’t want to let the distractions get to us. We competed on podium earlier this season and it helped us get use to that environment and get use to being on that podium, that will really help us get ready for SEC’s. We’re going to come out here and attack this meet Saturday.”

After finishing last in the conference last season, the Razorbacks are the most improved team in the league heading into the postseason.

Behind strong performances from its young talent, and just three seniors, the Razorbacks improved the team’s RQS (Regional Qualifying Score) by 0.99 points from this point last season, while improving the team’s season average by 1.948 points.

No other team in the conference improved their RQS by more than 0.33 points or their season average by 0.142 points.

Tomorrow’s first session is set to begin at 2 p.m. and will be televised on the SEC Network.

The network will use a quad box to highlight all events at once during the Championships.

Each event will be individual streamed live on the SEC Network+ and the WatchESPN App.

FAYETTEVILLE — On the heels of a national indoor runner-up finish, Arkansas transitions to its outdoor campaign with this weekend’s Arkansas Spring Invitational at John McDonnell Field.

The women’s hammer throw will be held Friday at approximately 6 p.m. with all other events scheduled for Saturday.

Tickets for the Arkansas Spring Invitational are $5 for adults with free admission for fans 17 years and younger.

Tickets are sold at the northwest entrance (corner of Razorback Rd and Meadow St) of John McDonnell Field.

Saturday’s field events start at 11:30 a.m. with running events beginning at 3 p.m.

National indoor champion (pentathlon) Taliyah Brooks is set to compete Saturday at 200 meters and in the long jump where she owns the program record of 6.50m/21-4 from last year’s NCAA meet in Eugene.

The Razorbacks will also feature 2018 indoor All-Americans Jada Baylark, Janeek Brown and Morgan Burks Magee.

Baylark owns the No. 5 time in school history at 100 meters (11.38) while Brown and Burks Magee will be making their collegiate outdoor debuts.

Arkansas enters the outdoor season ranked fourth in the Terry Crawford Program of the Year standings.

The Razorbacks have five-consecutive finishes inside the top three of the standings including runner-up efforts in 2014-15 and 2015-16.

In another post-indoor awards watch, junior Lexi Jacobus landed on The Bowerman Watch List following her NCAA title in the pole vault.

Another Top 5 SEC series starts Friday against Gators

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Arkansas looks to continue their strong start to the conference season as it travels to face No. 2 Florida for a three-game series this weekend in Gainesville.

Game one is set for a 5:30 p.m. start on Friday at Alfred A. McKethan Stadium and will be televised on SEC Network+.

Games two and three between the Hogs and Gators will be in front of a national audience as ESPN2 will carry Saturday’s game and the SEC Network will carry Sunday’s game. Both of the final two games of the series will start at 11 a.m.

This weekend’s series is Arkansas’ second straight against a top-five opponent and first against the Gators since 2016.

Arkansas did face Florida once in last year’s SEC Tournament semifinals, beating the eventual national champion in run-rule fashion, 16-0 in seven innings, for its fourth SEC Tournament final berth in school history.

• Arkansas heads into its series with No. 2 Florida as one of two SEC programs that are undefeated in conference play (Vanderbilt) going into week two.

• Over the last six games, Arkansas has hit 17 home runs, 13 of which came at the expense of No. 4 Kentucky last week. The Hogs currently lead the SEC and are second in the nation with 41 home runs.

• The Hogs are well ahead of last year’s home run pace where they hit an SEC-best 83 home runs, its third-most in school history. The 41 home runs hit this year is 12 ahead of the 2017 pace after 21 games.

• Freshman Casey Martin had his team-best 13-game hitting streak snapped on Wednesday at Charlotte. During that streak, he was hitting .367 with 11 RBIs, four home runs, 14 runs scored.

• The three-game sweep over No. 4 Kentucky last week was its first over the Wildcats since 2004.

• Arkansas scored 39 runs on Kentucky, its most in a three-game conference series since 1997.

• Junior Blaine Knight currently has the third-lowest ERA (1.30) of any SEC pitcher going into Friday’s game against the Gators. Four of his five outings have been five innings or more.
