Hogs get big hits, hold off Gamecocks twice for 13-8 win

VIDEO FROM ESPN SEC NETWORK
HOOVER, Ala. — No. 4 seed Arkansas jumped out to an early lead and held on to defeat No. 5 seed South Carolina 13-8 in the second round of the SEC baseball tournament.

Arkansas sophomore Dominic Fletcher provided an early spark for the Razorbacks, launching a three-run homer in the first inning.

RBI singles from Eric Cole and Luke Bonfield and a sacrifice fly by SEC Freshman of the Year Heston Kjerstad added three more runs for the Hogs in the second.

South Carolina junior Jacob Olson hit a single and advanced to second on a throwing error to lead off the third. Olson moved to third on a wild pitch and crossed the plate for the Gamecocks’ first run when Matt Williams reached on a throwing error.

The Razorbacks’ offense stayed hot in the third, tacking on two more runs on Jack Kenley’s RBI single and Carson Shaddy’s sacrifice fly.

Arkansas freshman Casey Martin extended the Razorbacks’ lead to 10-1 in the fourth by blasting a two-run shot. On Martin’s next trip to the plate in the sixth, he homered again to become only the second Arkansas player to hit multiple home runs in an SEC tournament game.

The Gamecocks were not going away quietly, posting five runs in the sixth inning, including four from a grand slam by LT Tolbert. Auburn’s Edouard Julien hit a grand slam in Game 6, making it the first time in SEC tournament history that two grand slams were hit on the same day.

With the bases loaded and facing two outs in the seventh, Fletcher got his second hit of the game to drive in two runs and increase the Hogs’ advantage to 13-6.

The Gamecocks’ final two runs came in the top of the ninth when senior Madison Stokes hit an RBI double and Tolbert delivered an RBI single.

Arkansas starter Kacey Murphy (7-4) earned the win.

UP NEXT: Arkansas advanced to the winners bracket and will face top-seeded Florida in Thursday’s fourth game on SEC Network. South Carolina plays in an elimination game against No. 8 seed LSU.

Excited to be a part of San Jacinto College baseball next year! Looking forward to another trip the the World Series???? pic.twitter.com/JExBobMC1c

Rutledge has not pitched for Arkansas since walking two batters and throwing three wild pitches without recording an out during an April 29 game against Alabama.

He did not travel with the Razorbacks to LSU or Georgia earlier this month or to the SEC Tournament.

“I haven’t seen him pitch good, so I can’t throw him out there,” Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn said May 7 when asked about Rutledge.

Rutledge started well, but struggled as the year went along. His ERA in SEC games was 27.00 and he recorded just two outs in three appearances.

UPDATE: ESPN reports Henry’s ACL tear confirmed

According to an update report, ESPN.com’s Eric D. Wiliams has reported that former Razorback Hunter Henry will miss the 2018 season for Los Angeles:

Chargers GM Tom Telesco confirmed that TE Hunter Henry will miss the 2018 season with an ACL right knee injury. Telesco said Henry is taking the news hard, but he’s strong mentally and the team will support him. Telesco said Henry suffered the injury while running a routine out route during practice that he has run hundreds of times, finishing the route 40 yards down the field running at half speed. The Chargers have not yet scheduled surgery for Henry. Asked if he’s reached out to Antonio Gates’ representation about the possibility of his return, Telesco had this to say: “I don’t get into things that we have done, that we could do or that we will do,” he said. “I wouldn’t do that with anybody as far as transactions are concerned. Like I said, we’ll look at all of the options that are out there and see where the road takes us.”

Now the question remains about the Chargers getting Gates back on the team.

Deifel on preparation for Sooners, connections to OU

Arkansas coach Courtney Deifel met with the media Wednesday to talk about the team’s appearance in the Super Regional at Oklahoma this weekend.

Hogs headed to NCAA West prelims in California

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — After weeks of training in the fall, an entire indoor season and a majority of the outdoor season completed, Arkansas heads into its penultimate collegiate competition, the NCAA West Preliminary Round (West Prelims) in Sacramento, California, May 24-26.

The regional competition, which spans over three days, will feature the 48 most talented student-athletes (per event) in the West. Student-athletes earn their trips to Eugene, Oregon, perpetual hosts of the NCAA Outdoor Championships by finishing among the top-12 in each event.

Arkansas travels to the west coast with 22 total NCAA qualifiers, 21 of which who have to earn their tickets to Eugene, Oregon by advancing out of the West Prelims.

The lone Razorback who has already secured entry to the NCAA Championships is Taliyah Brooks in the heptathlon.

“Right now I think we’re very healthy,” said coach Lance Harter.

“I think it’s a situation where we need to make sure that everyone keeps themselves ready to go and be able to handle the challenge at hand. The [NCAA] is divided in half (East-West),  so there’s a lot of great competition out there fighting for those 12 qualifying spots to Eugene, Oregon, it’s quite a challenge in every event,” Harter continued.
