Kim wins twice, Ortiz once, in Palmer Cup match play in France

EVIAN-les-BAINS, France — Arkansas senior-to-be Dylan Kim notched two match play wins helping the United States extend its lead in Palmer Cup action at Evian Resort Golf Club on Saturday.

Kim helped the Americans take a 20.5-15.5 advantage with Team USA needing just 30 points to retain the cup. The International team needs to 30.5 to reclaim the cup.

Morning play began with mixed foursomes and Kim teamed up with Justin Suh to defeat Maddie Szeryk and Andy Zhange, 5&3. Kim and Suh won the first hole and never trailed in the match.

Despite the win by Kim, the International Team closed the gap, winning seven of the 12 morning matches.

Team USA rebounded in the afternoon Four-Ball session where Kim was again victorious. She paired with Emila Migliaccio to defeat Jaravee Boonchant and Pimnipa Panthong, 1-up.

The match was all square through the first three holes before Kim and Migliaccio won the fourth hole of the round. They held the lead through 13 holes when Panthong and Boonchant squared the match with an eagle.

Kim and Migliaccio answered winning No. 15 and hanging on for the victory.

Recently graduated men’s golfer Alvaro Ortiz was also a winner on Saturday.

He and Razorback senior-to-be Maria Fassi dropped their first match in the morning, but Ortiz returned in the afternoon pairing with K.K. Limbhasut to defeat Stephen Franken and S.M. Lee of Team USA 5&4.

The duo opened on the 10th hole of the golf course and overcame a quick hole win by the Americans. Ortiz and Limhasut squared the match on the fourth hole of the round and took the lead on No. 17.

They also won No. 18 moving to 2-up. They put together a streak of three holes in a row winning Nos. 3, 4, and 5 to clinch the match.

Alana Uriell, who graduated in May, dropped both of her matches, first 2-up and the afternoon match by a score of 5&3.

Fassi and Ortiz were defeated in the morning, 5&4, and Fassi dropped her afternoon contest by the same score.

EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France — Arkansas All-Americans Maria Fassi and Alvaro Ortiz picked up a win for the International Team, but Team USA leads after opening round mixed four-ball match play at the Arnold Palmer Cup on Friday.

Fassi and Ortiz were paired in Match 12 on the first day of play at Evian Resort Golf Club. They picked up a 2&1 win over their Team USA counterparts after Fassi eagled the ninth hole breaking an all square tie.

The duo won the 10th hole as well and never trailed on the second half of the golf course.

“A win is always great, and I think it’s just sweeter when you come from behind,” Fassi said. “It was an amazing journey for 17 holes and it was nice to get the point for our team.”

“It’s awesome to share the course with her (Fassi),” Ortiz said. “We’ve been friends for a long time both from Mexico and from Arkansas. It was a very fun day. They (Team USA) got out to a hot start and it was nice to make a comeback and get the point.”

Razorback Dylan Kim paired with Zach Bauchou dropping their match 4&3 to K.K. Linbhasut and Pimnipa Panthong. Team USA trailed from the first green before falling in 15 holes.

Recently graduated Razorback Alana Uriell teamed with Sahith Teegala and they dropped their match 3&2 to Lorenzo Scalise and Jiwon Jeon. The International Team grabbed the lead on the first hole and never trailed in the match.

Team USA is up 8-4 after play was interrupted for two hours due to weather. When play resumed, Chandler Phillips and Lilia Vu started the Team USA charge with a 6&4 victory.

The Internationals would move the score to 5-2 with a 3&2 Jiwon Jeon and Lorenzo Scalise victory and a 4&3 triumph by Thailand’s KK Limbhasut and Pimnipa Panthong.

The two sides would split the next four matches before the USA’s Braden Thornberry clinched the final match with birdie on No. 18 and move the American lead to 8-4.

Two rounds of competition will be held tomorrow with mixed foursomes teeing off at 7:30 am and four-ball at 1:30 pm.

Both rounds will commence off tees No. 1 and 10. Kim and Uriell change playing partners for the Mixed Foursomes matches while Fassi and Ortiz remain paired. Teams again change up for the afternoon Four-Ball pairings.

Robinson’s Williams commits to Hogs on radio show

If you weren’t listening to Richard Davenport’s Recruiting Thursday show Thursday night on ESPN Arkansas, you missed a big-time commitment.

Joe T. Robinson defensive end Zach Williams made his commitment to Arkansas official.

“I think over all these schools I visited, I weighed my pros and cons…I felt like Arkansas was the best option for me even though some were very close,” Williams said on the show. “I felt like there was nothing better than home I guess since I was raised around Arkansas.”

Zach is 6-4, 225, with a 4.57 40-yard time, had over 26 other scholarship offers from schools like Alabama, Texas, Tennessee, Georgia, Oregon, Florida, TCU, Oregon State and Louisville. ESPN rates him a 4-star prospect.

England promoted; Polanski joins Razorbacks’ athletic training staff

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas has named longtime athletic trainer Dave England the interim Director of Athletic Training and Dave Polanski as the head athletic trainer for football.

“Our athletic training program is integral to the health and wellbeing of our student-athletes,” athletics director Hunter Yurachek said. “The promotion of Dave England and the addition of Dave Polanski provides our student-athletes with two outstanding individuals and athletic training professionals who provide great expertise and a breadth of experience to our program.

“Dave England has been at the forefront of care at the University of Arkansas for more than 30 years. His dedication to meeting the athletic training needs of student-athletes has benefitted thousands of Razorbacks in all sports. With his leadership, we will continue to provide our student-athletes with best-in-class care to help them compete and succeed in the SEC and nationally.

“The addition of Dave Polanski, as the head athletic trainer for football, provides Coach Chad Morris and our football student-athletes a tenured and well-respected member of the athletic training community. His outstanding work at Tulsa and UCLA was instrumental in the success of those programs. We are happy to welcome Dave, his wife Krista and their daughters Aileen and Naomi to the Razorback Family.”

England will continue to be the head athletic trainer for the men’s basketball program while taking on additional duties as the interim Director of Athletic Training.

England has been with the Razorbacks since 1984 and has earned numerous awards since returning to his alma mater, including the 2016 Chris Patrick Award which is given annually to the most outstanding athletic trainer in the Southeastern Conference.

He has been recognized multiple times for his work by the National Athletics Trainers Association and the Arkansas Trainers Association.

England was a founding member of the Arkansas Athletic Trainers Association in 1987 and was inducted into the organization’s hall of fame in 1999.

In his role as interim director, England will have administrative oversight of the Razorbacks’ sports medicine program and will continue to enhance the department’s relationships with medical providers, team physicians and other service providers.

In addition to men’s basketball, he will also continue to work with baseball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s golf and the Razorback spirit squads.

Polanski joins the Razorbacks after spending the last 19 years at Tulsa, where he served as the school’s Director of Sports Medicine and Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Health & Performance.

Prior to joining the Golden Hurricane, he worked at UCLA beginning in 1994 as an assistant athletic trainer with the football program and one year handling all medical aspects for the men’s basketball team.

Before going to UCLA, Polanski was the athletic trainer for men’s basketball, women’s lacrosse and men’s soccer at The College of William & Mary. He started his career at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian College.

Polanski earned a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Purdue in 1990 and a master’s in athletic training from Arizona in 1992.

Long hired as new athletics director for Jayhawks

Former Arkansas athletics director has a new gig, hired at Kansas as the athletics that will give him a nice raise.

Long signed a five-year contract worth $1.5 million annually with Kansas Athletics Inc. paying $1.3 million of the total and the university paying the remaining $200,000, according to a story at ESPN.com.

Long replaces Sheahon Zenger, who was fired in May after coming to Kansas in 2011 due to a lack of progress, according to the story.

Long was the athletics direct at Arkansas from 2008 until last year when the school fired him, with the school’s chancellor saying he had “lost the support of many of our fans, alumni, key supporters, and members of the university leadership.”

He was the first chairman of the CFP selection committee in 2014 and 2015 and remained on the committee through last year.

Williams, 6-4, 324 pounds, picked the Razorbacks over offers from Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Minnesota, Houston and others.

He was coached at Lufkin by Malvern native Todd Quick.

FAYETTEVILLE — Former Razorback All-American and Denver Broncos’ All-Pro safety Steve Atwater will be among nine honorees inducted into the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony will be Monday, Sept. 10, 2018, in a luncheon at the Brown-Lupton University Union on the TCU campus in Fort Worth, Texas.

Hosted by the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, the event will honor Atwater as well as other legends from schools previously affiliated with the Southwest Conference.

“Steve Atwater has long been a Razorback football legend and soon he will be a member of the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame,” UA athletics director Hunter Yurachek said. “He helped lead Arkansas to a conference championship and four bowl games before going on to an outstanding NFL career.

“We look forward to celebrating with Steve and his family in September as he is honored as one of the best to ever compete in the Southwest Conference.”

Atwater is a member of the University of Arkansas Sports Hall of Honor as well as the school’s All-Century and All-Decade teams.

He was named to three All-America teams as a senior in 1988 (Associated Press and Sporting News second team, Football News third team).

Atwater was a three-time All-Southwest Conference performer (1986, 1988 first team, 1987 second team). The St. Louis native still holds the school record of 14 career interceptions. He also recorded 229 career tackles and 28 pass deflections in his Razorback career.

He had 70 tackles, nine passes broken up and four interceptions in 1988, helping Arkansas to a 10-2 record, a Cotton Bowl appearance and the Southwest Conference championship.

The Hogs were a combined 38-11 in his four years with appearances in the Cotton, Liberty, Orange and Holiday bowls, and finished ranked 12th, 15th and 12th following his freshman, sophomore and senior seasons, respectively.

The 20th pick in the first round of the NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos in 1989, he played 11 years in the NFL, finishing with 818 tackles and 24 interceptions, and helping the Broncos win Super Bowl titles in 1997 and 1998.

He was selected to the Pro Bowl eight times, second most in franchise history. Atwater started all 155 games while he was with Denver, with 14 post-season starts including in Super Bowl XXXII where he posted one of the best performances ever by a safety in a Super Bowl. He ended his career with the New York Jets.

In addition to Atwater, the 2018 class includes All-SWC Baylor basketball player, Tommy Bowman, All American basketball player from the University of Houston, Larry Micheaux, former women’s track & field coach from Rice, Victor Lopez, SMU basketball standout, Denny Holman, University of Texas All-American baseball player, Brooks Kieschnick, Texas A&M football and track legend, Curtis Dickey, former TCU star basketball player, Kurt Thomas and All-SWC quarterback from Texas Tech, Joe Barnes.

It’s only a report, but Arkansas may be hosting Indiana in a game at Bud Walton Arena on Nov. 18, according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.

The two programs have met just twice in basketball and neither team featured particularly legendary coaches — 1949-50 and in the 2008 NCAA Tournament.

The Razorbacks are 1-1 against the Hoosiers, who will have new coach in Archie Miller, who had a successful run at Dayton with 139 wins and four NCAA Tournament appearances.
