Ortiz concludes solid week at 2018 Palmer Cup matches

EVIAN-les-BAINS, France — Arkansas graduate Alvaro Ortiz wrapped up match play at the 2018 Palmer Cup at Evian Resort Golf Club on Sunday.

The United States claimed 18 of 24 points in the final round singles matches to pull away for a 38.5-21.5. This year’s edition of Team USA is the first side to win as the visiting team since the 2010 Americans. Neither side had retained the cup since the US in 2011. The United States now leads the all-time series 12-9-1.

Ortiz played his way to three match wins in four events. He opened pairing with fellow Razorback Maria Fassi and the duo won the Mixed Four-Ball match on day one. They were again paired in round two for the Mixed Foursomes but dropped the match.

Ortiz rebounded that same afternoon teamming with KK Limbhasut picking up the 5&4 win in Four-Ball pairings. Ortiz dropped the final match of the tournament on Sunday, 1-up. It was a match that saw Ortiz hold as much as a two hole lead through the first nine holes. His opponent squared the match on the 15th hole and birdied the 16th hole. He would hang on for the one-hole win.

We always knew Razorbacks were best in college sports

Before anyone jumps out of their seat, we’re talking about a story from Zach Barnett at FootballScoop.com ranking the best brands in college football.

And your Arkansas Razorbacks are right there at No. 1.

It’s by conference and it’s not a ranking by sport. Hey, the Kansas Jayhawk is his pick in the Big 12 so you know it has nothing to do with football, right?

In the SEC, it’s the Razorbacks at the top, which is something we’ve known for quite awhile. Here’s what he said about the Razorback:

What you’ve got here is an sonic masterpiece. Arkansas has named itself after an animal no one else dared choose yet is still highly deadly (get yourself in an Oklahoma drill with a feral pig and see how you come out). They chose a compound word that is two rough, action sounds put together — and then picked a nickname to the nickname that is another word altogether. Bravo.

The only thing the UA’s marketing department should do is send an email requesting the next time please use the actual Razorback logo instead of a wordmark.

It is the MOST unique aspect of all.

Social media reacts to Bielema 100x better coach

Is Bret Bielema really 100 times better as a coach than Chad Morris?

A host of a Mississippi sports radio show last week made the comment during a guest spot on the Paul Finebaum Show that Bret Bielema was “100 times better than Chad Morris” and, well, it took off from there.

Paul Finebaum on Twitter

Bret Bielema is a 100x better coach than Chad Morris” – @bobounds

Gamisou on Twitter

@finebaum @bobounds Who is this douche? Bret was lazy and made no effort to go recruit. This coaching staff and CM are working their ass off. Bret was such a great coach wedsnr even Count how many leads he blew in 5 years. Good coaches adjust

Jonathan Weaver on Twitter

@finebaum @bobounds Uhhh. Strongly disagree.

Fake Wally Hall on Twitter

@JonathanKWeaver @finebaum @bobounds Yeah that’s a bit much. Have to go pretty far back in the annals of Arkansas history to find a coach that bookended his tenure with 0 & 1 conference wins. The regression the last 2 years. The blown 4th qtr leads. Total lack of identity as a team.

Brooks Lawrence, MD on Twitter

@finebaum @bobounds If my math is right, when Chad Morris goes 1-39 in SEC compared to 11-29, that would be at most 11 times better. Am I right?

Jason Hunter on Twitter

@bblawrence331 @finebaum @bobounds Yeah if you are only counting the wins and losses but what about the size of the mans heart?

Jimmy Caudill on Twitter

@984Hunter @bblawrence331 @finebaum @bobounds Bert’s heart is clearly much larger.

@jimmycaudill @984Hunter @bblawrence331 @finebaum @bobounds Bert’s heart is working 100X harder for sure

Gamisou on Twitter

@finebaum @bobounds I think he just said this because he’s threatened. Bret was good for his agenda…losing to Miss St and competing with ole miss for scraps. By him saying this he is saying it’s not Bret it’s Arkansas. Nobody is buying that dummy

Kim wins twice, Ortiz once, in Palmer Cup match play in France

EVIAN-les-BAINS, France — Arkansas senior-to-be Dylan Kim notched two match play wins helping the United States extend its lead in Palmer Cup action at Evian Resort Golf Club on Saturday.

Kim helped the Americans take a 20.5-15.5 advantage with Team USA needing just 30 points to retain the cup. The International team needs to 30.5 to reclaim the cup.

Morning play began with mixed foursomes and Kim teamed up with Justin Suh to defeat Maddie Szeryk and Andy Zhange, 5&3. Kim and Suh won the first hole and never trailed in the match.

Despite the win by Kim, the International Team closed the gap, winning seven of the 12 morning matches.

Team USA rebounded in the afternoon Four-Ball session where Kim was again victorious. She paired with Emila Migliaccio to defeat Jaravee Boonchant and Pimnipa Panthong, 1-up.

The match was all square through the first three holes before Kim and Migliaccio won the fourth hole of the round. They held the lead through 13 holes when Panthong and Boonchant squared the match with an eagle.

Kim and Migliaccio answered winning No. 15 and hanging on for the victory.

Recently graduated men’s golfer Alvaro Ortiz was also a winner on Saturday.

He and Razorback senior-to-be Maria Fassi dropped their first match in the morning, but Ortiz returned in the afternoon pairing with K.K. Limbhasut to defeat Stephen Franken and S.M. Lee of Team USA 5&4.

The duo opened on the 10th hole of the golf course and overcame a quick hole win by the Americans. Ortiz and Limhasut squared the match on the fourth hole of the round and took the lead on No. 17.

They also won No. 18 moving to 2-up. They put together a streak of three holes in a row winning Nos. 3, 4, and 5 to clinch the match.

Alana Uriell, who graduated in May, dropped both of her matches, first 2-up and the afternoon match by a score of 5&3.

Fassi and Ortiz were defeated in the morning, 5&4, and Fassi dropped her afternoon contest by the same score.

Play concludes on Sunday with singles match play action. See below for the complete schedule and tee times.

Fassi, Ortiz win; USA leads Palmer Cup in France

Photos by Razorback Sports Communications
EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France — Arkansas All-Americans Maria Fassi and Alvaro Ortiz picked up a win for the International Team, but Team USA leads after opening round mixed four-ball match play at the Arnold Palmer Cup on Friday.

Fassi and Ortiz were paired in Match 12 on the first day of play at Evian Resort Golf Club. They picked up a 2&1 win over their Team USA counterparts after Fassi eagled the ninth hole breaking an all square tie.

The duo won the 10th hole as well and never trailed on the second half of the golf course.

“A win is always great, and I think it’s just sweeter when you come from behind,” Fassi said. “It was an amazing journey for 17 holes and it was nice to get the point for our team.”

“It’s awesome to share the course with her (Fassi),” Ortiz said. “We’ve been friends for a long time both from Mexico and from Arkansas. It was a very fun day. They (Team USA) got out to a hot start and it was nice to make a comeback and get the point.”

Razorback Dylan Kim paired with Zach Bauchou dropping their match 4&3 to K.K. Linbhasut and Pimnipa Panthong. Team USA trailed from the first green before falling in 15 holes.

Recently graduated Razorback Alana Uriell teamed with Sahith Teegala and they dropped their match 3&2 to Lorenzo Scalise and Jiwon Jeon. The International Team grabbed the lead on the first hole and never trailed in the match.

Team USA is up 8-4 after play was interrupted for two hours due to weather. When play resumed, Chandler Phillips and Lilia Vu started the Team USA charge with a 6&4 victory.

The Internationals would move the score to 5-2 with a 3&2 Jiwon Jeon and Lorenzo Scalise victory and a 4&3 triumph by Thailand’s KK Limbhasut and Pimnipa Panthong.

The two sides would split the next four matches before the USA’s Braden Thornberry clinched the final match with birdie on No. 18 and move the American lead to 8-4.

Two rounds of competition will be held tomorrow with mixed foursomes teeing off at 7:30 am and four-ball at 1:30 pm.

Both rounds will commence off tees No. 1 and 10. Kim and Uriell change playing partners for the Mixed Foursomes matches while Fassi and Ortiz remain paired. Teams again change up for the afternoon Four-Ball pairings.

Robinson’s Williams commits to Hogs on radio show

If you weren’t listening to Richard Davenport’s Recruiting Thursday show Thursday night on ESPN Arkansas, you missed a big-time commitment.

Joe T. Robinson defensive end Zach Williams made his commitment to Arkansas official.

“I think over all these schools I visited, I weighed my pros and cons…I felt like Arkansas was the best option for me even though some were very close,” Williams said on the show. “I felt like there was nothing better than home I guess since I was raised around Arkansas.”

He also announced it on Twitter:

England promoted; Polanski joins Razorbacks’ athletic training staff

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas has named longtime athletic trainer Dave England the interim Director of Athletic Training and Dave Polanski as the head athletic trainer for football.

“Our athletic training program is integral to the health and wellbeing of our student-athletes,” athletics director Hunter Yurachek said. “The promotion of Dave England and the addition of Dave Polanski provides our student-athletes with two outstanding individuals and athletic training professionals who provide great expertise and a breadth of experience to our program.

“Dave England has been at the forefront of care at the University of Arkansas for more than 30 years. His dedication to meeting the athletic training needs of student-athletes has benefitted thousands of Razorbacks in all sports. With his leadership, we will continue to provide our student-athletes with best-in-class care to help them compete and succeed in the SEC and nationally.

“The addition of Dave Polanski, as the head athletic trainer for football, provides Coach Chad Morris and our football student-athletes a tenured and well-respected member of the athletic training community. His outstanding work at Tulsa and UCLA was instrumental in the success of those programs. We are happy to welcome Dave, his wife Krista and their daughters Aileen and Naomi to the Razorback Family.”

England will continue to be the head athletic trainer for the men’s basketball program while taking on additional duties as the interim Director of Athletic Training.

England has been with the Razorbacks since 1984 and has earned numerous awards since returning to his alma mater, including the 2016 Chris Patrick Award which is given annually to the most outstanding athletic trainer in the Southeastern Conference.

He has been recognized multiple times for his work by the National Athletics Trainers Association and the Arkansas Trainers Association.

England was a founding member of the Arkansas Athletic Trainers Association in 1987 and was inducted into the organization’s hall of fame in 1999.

In his role as interim director, England will have administrative oversight of the Razorbacks’ sports medicine program and will continue to enhance the department’s relationships with medical providers, team physicians and other service providers.

In addition to men’s basketball, he will also continue to work with baseball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s golf and the Razorback spirit squads.

Polanski joins the Razorbacks after spending the last 19 years at Tulsa, where he served as the school’s Director of Sports Medicine and Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Health & Performance.

Prior to joining the Golden Hurricane, he worked at UCLA beginning in 1994 as an assistant athletic trainer with the football program and one year handling all medical aspects for the men’s basketball team.

Before going to UCLA, Polanski was the athletic trainer for men’s basketball, women’s lacrosse and men’s soccer at The College of William & Mary. He started his career at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian College.

Polanski earned a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Purdue in 1990 and a master’s in athletic training from Arizona in 1992.

It didn’t take long for media to catch clause in new deal

USA Today columnist Dan Wolken was the first we saw to catch the clause in Jeff Long’s new contract at Kansas that is interesting:

Dan Wolken on Twitter

Look at this from Jeff Long’s contract with Kansas. If Kansas basketball somehow got put on probation for the FBI stuff, Long’s contract would be automatically extended by the length of the probation. WOW.

And it didn’t take long for Kansas folks to point out his daughter attending Missouri. In case you didn’t know it, Kansas-Missouri is one of those sworn-enemy type deals.

Turnt Wooldridge on Twitter

While Jeff Long was AD at Arkansas, his daughter graduated from Fayetteville HS and chose to attend Mizzou. Now, with a daughter at Mizzou, Jeff takes the AD job at Kansas. Much respect for this close-knit fam whose love language is trolling the hell out of each other.

Brian on Twitter

Congratulations to the university of kansas and their new AD, Jeff Long!

Chris Gervino on Twitter

Perhaps Jeff Long could someday help restore Missouri and Kansas rivalry. His daughter currently attends Mizzou.

Here’s a grab-bag of some of the social media reaction to Long’s hiring with the Jayhawks:

Matt Tait: KU maximizes reach in hiring Jeff Long as new athletic director https://t.co/4EfhtaA2Sh

Rock Chalk Blog on Twitter

Jeff Long was Arkansas’ AD for the last 10 years. He also served on the College Football Playoff selection committee. It’s clear what KU’s objective is: Bill Self runs the basketball program, so let’s get a football-centered AD to get that turned around.

Bruce Feldman on Twitter

I think #KU made a very smart hire in getting Jeff Long as Jayhawks new AD. He’s one of the most respected ppl amongst his peers and I’ve talked to several folks who have worked with him thru the years who say he’s the best guy they’ve worked for.

Gary Bedore on Twitter

Great story by Jesse on Jeff Long and why he makes sense for KU, new chancellor. Read about new AD just minutes after the announcement: https://t.co/PhLtaz1sOk

Doug Samuels on Twitter

Kansas is really stepping up and making Jeff Long the #2 paid AD in the Big 12 https://t.co/dmJaJhXi14

Zach???? on Twitter

Everyone talking about Jeff Long hiring BERT now that he’s AD at Kansas is gonna be surprised as hell when Houston Nutt walks out during the introductory presser.

Gino Franco on Twitter

So Jeff Long is the new AD at Kansas. Little Rock people are already demanding 2 KU Basketball games per season in Little Rock or they will cut off money.

Greg Flugaur on Twitter

Kansas has given themselves a chance to improve their Football Program with the hire of Jeff Long as new Athletic Director. AD Long also has long and strong ties to Ann Arbor, Michigan which will also help Kansas increase their B1G opportunities.

Derek Johnson on Twitter

I’ll just leave this here. Jeff Long and Les Miles are friends. https://t.co/pPHG5KVyK2

Adam Kaye on Twitter

@ShehanJeyarajah Apparently Jeff Long wanted to get as far away from the College Football Playoff as possible. Mission accomplished.

Morgan Moriarty on Twitter

Kansas hired Jeff Long as its new AD, and naturally, the Jayhawks are officially on *Brian Fantana voice* BERT WATCH, folks! https://t.co/jOCc1p0ytA

Mike Lavieri on Twitter

If this list doesn’t change, Jeff Long’s $1.5 million/year will make him the fourth-highest paid AD in the country. https://t.co/6diHUJ05ha FWIW, Zenger was No. 44 last year. #kufball #kubball

@cridings1 @HawgHoops Jeff long got ran off beecause first and foremost he wouldn’t fire Bert (who had the worst record of any coach to last 5 years at Arkansas) He also shifted money that was donated for the baseball team into the coffers of the football team.

As the new Kansas athletic director, Jeff Long is tasked with turning around the most downtrodden football program in the Power Five. https://t.co/4GEozyAV5O

Long hired as new athletics director for Jayhawks

Former Arkansas athletics director has a new gig, hired at Kansas as the athletics that will give him a nice raise.

Long signed a five-year contract worth $1.5 million annually with Kansas Athletics Inc. paying $1.3 million of the total and the university paying the remaining $200,000, according to a story at ESPN.com.

Long replaces Sheahon Zenger, who was fired in May after coming to Kansas in 2011 due to a lack of progress, according to the story.

Long was the athletics direct at Arkansas from 2008 until last year when the school fired him, with the school’s chancellor saying he had “lost the support of many of our fans, alumni, key supporters, and members of the university leadership.”

He was the first chairman of the CFP selection committee in 2014 and 2015 and remained on the committee through last year.
