McKeon named SEC’s offensive player of the week by league

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Razorback junior midfielder Kayla McKeon was tabbed as the SEC Offensive Player of the Week today by the league office for her performance in Arkansas’ win over Baylor last week for the team’s third win of the season.

“What a deserving award,” Arkansas coach Colby Hale said. “These awards are always a byproduct of team results. She not only scored the winning goal, but did so many little things to help in the result.”

With Arkansas looking for its second result over a Power-5 opponent this year, the Baylor Bears came to Fayetteville as the Razorbacks’ second home opponent for 2018. The Bears are coming off an Elite 8 appearance from a year ago.

With more than 2,200 Razorback fans in attendance the Razorbacks and Bears matched each other goal-for-goal with Arkansas pulling out the 3-2 victory thanks to a game-winning goal by McKeon in the 58th minute.

After a shot attempt was deflected in the middle of the box, the Razorbacks were able to reset their offense with Parker Goins finding McKeon along the back post. McKeon finished with the header and joins Marissa Kinsey as the team’s leading goal scorers for the year.

Including her score in the 1-0 victory over Duquesne in the season opener, both of McKeon’s goals this season have been game winners.

The Texas native has started in 19-consecutive matches dating back to Sept. 21, 2017 and has tallied eight points (3 gals, 2 assists) during that span.

Now with 15 goals in her career, including six game winners, which are the most of any active Razorback, she has 37 career points to go along with seven career assists.

Arkansas will return to Razorback Field for its next two matches starting with Florida Atlantic on Friday at 7 p.m.
