Warrick’s walk-off double lifts Razorbacks past Kentucky for series win

FAYETTEVILLE — Katie Warrick delivered a third-pitch double down the left-field line to lift Arkansas to its second conference series win with a 3-2 win over Kentucky.

How it happened

Arkansas (25-11, 6-6) got another solid performance from Autumn Storms in the circle today. Storms recorded her 13th win of the season, forcing 15 groundouts from the Kentucky offense. Storms saw the bases loaded twice and gave up no hits in either situation.

The Razorbacks scored first with an RBI single by Warrick in the first frame. Sophomore Hannah McEwen scored on the hit from third, after reaching first on a base hit to the right side.

Kentucky (22-13, 7-5) tied the game at two runs apiece with a two-RBI single through the right side off the bat of Alex Martens.

Arkansas’ defense held strong in the top of the seventh inning when the Wildcats loaded the bases with two hits and an intentional walk to Abbey Cheek.

Haydi Bugarin fielded a ground ball at second base and made the play at first for the final out of the inning as the Hogs avoided any additional Wildcat runs.

Danielle Gibson reached base in the bottom of the inning and Arkansas called on pinch-runner Carley Haizlip. Haizlip advanced to second and into scoring position with a walk by senior Ashley Diaz.

Warrick’s double that followed was the ninth of her senior season, bringing her career total to 20.

The series

The Razorbacks continue to hold the series history in their hands, taking a 33-26 advantage over the Wildcats.

Arkansas has not taken a weekend series from Kentucky since 2013, when the Hogs defeated the Wildcats in games one and two of the series.

Arkansas also moves to 3-0 all-time when playing Kentucky on March 31.

Notables

• Arkansas is now 22-4 when it scores first and 15-1 when the Hogs score in the first inning.

• Warrick recorded her 19th multi-hit game and 16 multi-RBI game.

• McEwen has now reached base in 34 of 36 contests, recording hits in all but four games.

• Diaz tallied 11 putouts in the win, putting her only 19 from moving into fourth all-time at Arkansas for career putouts.

Up next

Arkansas will start a four-game road stretch on Wednesday when they travel to Missouri State for a non-conference mid-week game with the Bears.

After Wednesday’s contest, the Razorbacks will head south to Gainesville, where they will kick-off a three-game series with Florida starting Friday at 5 p.m.

Gilbert posts lifetime best to close out performances at Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas — Arkansas closed out the Texas Relays as Tre’Bien Gilbert, who ran a lifetime-best to qualify for the final, posted yet another lifetime-best in a seventh-place finish Saturday night.

The 4×800-meter relay of Chase Pareti, Eugene Grayson III, Kevin Wilkinson, and Kieran Taylor brought home bronze in 7:30.83 finishing third-overall.

Next on the track for the Razorbacks was the 4×200-meter relay of Josh Oglesby, Rashad Boyd, Kris Hari, and Carl Elliot III finishing ninth-overall in 1:25.97.

In the final of the men’s 110-meter hurdles, Gilbert ran 13.94 followed closely by teammate Shakiel Chattoo in eighth at 14.04 just two one-hundredths (.02) of a second off his season-best.

Ethan Moehn finished fifth in the Jerry Thompson Invitational Mile running 4:16.77.

Closing out the meet was the 4×400-meter relay of John Winn, Hunter Woodhall, Rhayko Schwartz, and James Milholen combining to run a season-best time of 3:09.94 for sixth-place.

Arkansas returns home to host the John McDonnell Invitational Apr. 12-13 at John McDonnell Field.

Razorbacks finish strong on final day at Texas Relays on Saturday

AUSTIN, Texas — With seven events on the track, Arkansas had a busy afternoon on the final day of the Texas Relays on Saturday.

Arkansas started the day on the track with the finals of the 4×100-meter relay. Kiara Parker, Payton Chadwick, Janeek Brown and Kethlin Campbell qualified Friday afternoon running 44.17, and followed up that performance by lowering their time to 43.62 – the fifth-fastest performance in program history.

In the final of the 100-meter hurdles, Janeek Brown charged out to a lead she held until the final hurdle where she clipped the barrier causing her to lose her balance as she dove torwards the finish line.

Brown took second in a season-best 12.97 while Chadwick followed close behind in third-place at 13.13. Brown’s time is currently the No.2 time in the NCAA trailing only LSU’s Tonea Marshall who bested Brown by a mere one one-hundredth (.01) of a second in Saturday’s final.

Kiara Parker, who qualified for Saturday’s final of the 100-meters with a season-opening 11.21, finished fifth in the final running 11.30 followed by teammate Kethlin Campbell in seventh at 11.56.

The first of two 4×400-meter relays on the day for Arkansas featured Paris Peoples, Sydney Hammit, Sydney Davis, and Shafiqua Maloney running 3:39.06 for fifth-place in the Invitational Section.

The second 4×400-meter relay for the Razorbacks saw Morgan Burks-Magee, Parker, Campbell and Chadwick post a season-best time of 3:33.35 in a second-place finish that is currently No. 4 in the NCAA.

Saturday featured two field events for the Razorbacks as Tori Hoggard, Lexi Jacobus, and Desiree Freier competed in the pole vault university elite section while G’Auna Edwards displayed her talents in the long jump.

Hoggard finished as the top collegian in the competition clearing 4.50m (14-9) – currently the second-best clearance in the NCAA this season.

Jacobus and Freier finished seventh and eighth, respectively, with identical clearances of 4.25m (13-11.25).

G’Auna Edwards finished sixth in section “A” of the university/college division long jump leaping out to a mark of 6.33m (20-9.25) – the No.3 mark in program history.

Arkansas returns home to host the John McDonnell Invitational on April 12-13 at John McDonnell Field.

Razorbacks can’t get key hits as Rebels even series with 4-3 win Saturday

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas couldn’t string enough hits together Saturday afternoon as Ole Miss rallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat the Razorbacks, 4-3, and force a deciding game three Sunday at Baum-Walker Stadium.

Arkansas (22-5, 6-2 SEC) scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning off home runs by Jack Kenley and Christian Franklin, but only had one other hit in the final five innings.

At the time of Franklin’s solo home run, the Razorbacks had the 3-1 lead, but saw it dwindle as the Rebels (19-9, 4-4 SEC) scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings to tie it at 3-3.

In the top of the ninth, Ole Miss took the final lead of the game when Grae Kessinger doubled home pinch runner Carl Gindl to give the Rebels the 4-3 lead.

Arkansas went three-up and three-down in the bottom of the ninth as Ole Miss closer Parker Caracci picked up his seventh save of the season.

Sophomore Casey Martin went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, his second three-hit game of the year. Two of his three hits were doubles, setting a career high and extended his hit streak to five games.

Kenley, Franklin and Jacob Nesbit each had one hit in the game as well. Kenley’s home run was his fifth of the year, tying for the team lead, while Franklin’s was his fourth.

Freshman right-hander Connor Noland had a nice bounce-back start after not making it through two innings last week at Alabama. Noland gave up only two earned runs in 4.2 innings on Saturday against Ole Miss, scattering seven hits and striking out three.

Saturday’s loss drops Arkansas to 4-2 in one-run games this year and 3-1 in games that it has scored three or less runs. It also breaks a streak of seven-straight home wins dating back to March 10 against Louisiana Tech.

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas split its doubleheader on Saturday against Mississippi State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

The Razorbacks fell to the eighth-ranked Bulldogs, 5-2, before sweeping the Golden Lions, 7-0.

Mississippi State took the doubles point to go up 1-0 in the first match of the day off of consecutive victories on courts three and one. Eighth-ranked Nuno Borges and his partner Strahinja Rakic defeated Oscar Mesquida and Adam Sanjurjo in a tightly contested match 6-4 to secure the point.

Mississippi State would jump out to a 2-0 lead with a win on the third court before Josh Howard-Tripp took Arkansas’ first court of the day on the second court, beating Niclas Braun 6-3, 6-3 to cut the lead to 2-1.

After a win on court four, the Bulldogs would clinch the match on court one as No. 2 Nuno Borges took the first set 6-3, before taking the second set 7-6(3), despite No. 52 Oscar Mesquida forcing a tiebreaker in the second set.

In the final court, Jose Dominguez Alonso would win on five 6-4, 6-4 over Florian Broska for a 5-2 final score against the Bulldogs.

In the day’s second match, Arkansas cruised passed the Golden Lions of UAPB with a 7-0 sweep.

Competing only five athletes, UAPB forfeited the third court in doubles and the sixth court in singles. The doubles point was secured on the second court as Pedro Alonso and Josh Bortnick garnered a 6-1 victory over Simon Lewis and Kameron Myers.

Owning a 2-0 victory in singles, Enrique Paya defeated Kameron Myers 6-0, 6-0 to put Arkansas within one point of clinching the match.

Adam Sanjurjo would clinch the match on court two with a 6-0, 6-1 win as the Hogs would win the final three courts for a 7-0 final.

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas dropped game two of its series to Kentucky on Saturday, 16-2, after four errors and some hot hitting by the Wildcats.

Arkansas now stands at 24-10 overall, 5-6 in conference play.

No. 13 Arkansas and No. 18 Kentucky will fight for the series Sunday at 1p.m.

How it happened

• A passed ball and Razorback error put the Hogs behind early, trailing 3-0 after the first frame.

• Starting pitcher Mary Haff was relieved with two outs in the first inning after a collision at home plate during a scoring play. Junior Lauren Graves entered and struck out the final Wildcat, swinging.

• Seven Wildcat runs crossed in the second off seven Kentucky hits and three more errors by the Arkansas defense. Five of those runs were scored with two outs on the board.

• The Hogs scored their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the second, off the bat of senior Ashley Diaz, whose single up the middle brought in Nicole Duncan and Keely Edwards.

• The Razorbacks gave up no additional errors, but Kentucky’s offense stayed hot, with six runs over the third and fourth innings. The fifth inning was the only inning UK did not score a run.

Notables

• UK’s 16 runs is the most runs allowed in a single game by Arkansas since April 16, 2016 when the Hogs gave up 23 runs to #3 Auburn in game two of the series.

• Three Razorbacks saw time in the circle today: Haff, Graves, and senior Katie Warrick. Combined, the trio dished out three strikeouts and three walks.

• Today’s run-rule defeat was the second of the season, after the Razorbacks dropped game two of the series to Ole Miss (12-0).
