Jones takes blame for missed free throws in loss to Tigers, despite 40 points

Arkansas’ Mason Jones scored 40 on No. 11 Auburn in a 79-76 overtime loss Tuesday night, but shouldered the blame for the loss later, saying ‘no excuse’ missing five free throws.

Hogs not able to take advantage of Jones’ big night in overtime loss to Auburn

FAYETTEVILLE — Mason Jones broke the 30-point plateau for the third straight game and turned in his second 40-point effort of the season, but Arkansas couldn’t take advantage of it against Auburn in a 79-76 overtime loss at Bud Walton Arena.

Jones finished with 40 points (12-of-24 from the field, including 5-of-12 from 3-point range) and five assists.

Jones scored a career-high 41 points in a win over Tulsa earlier this season and has a total of five games with at least 30 points this season.

In a game that featured 11 ties and 12 lead changes, the Razorbacks were down 34-32 at halftime,then scored the first five points of the second half to go up three.

Auburn battled back to take a five-point lead (48-43) with 13:36 left in regulation.

The Hogs responded with a 7-0 run of its own, highlighted by a Jones to Adrio Bailey Alley-oop dunk to put the Hogs up two, 50-48 (11:34).

Arkansas built a pair of 11-point leads over the next five-plus minutes, the last being a 65-54 advantage on a highlight-reel dun by Jalen Harris at the 5:59 mark.

Auburn used an 11-1 run and whittled the lead down to two, 68-66, with two minutes remaining in regulation. Then, J’Von McCormick sank a 3-pointer to put the Tigers up one, 69-68 (1:43). Jones was fouled with 36 seconds left and tied the game at 69-69 with a free throw. Arkansas’ defense forced a shot clock violation.

The Razorbacks had 6.5 seconds left on the clock to win the game, but a 3-pointer by Harris went in-and-out to force overtime.

In overtime, Auburn led 75-70 with 1:42 left. The Hogs’’ defense got a stop and Jones made a great hustle play to get the Hogs to within one, 77-76, on an old-fashion 3-point play with 12 seconds left.

Auburn’s Samir Doughty was immediately fouled and he made both free throws to go up three, 79-76. The Razorbacks got one final look but did not convert.

In addition to Jones’ 40 points, Arkansas was led by Bailey. The senior scored an SEC career-high 11 points and grabbed an SEC career-high seven rebounds.

Desi Sills added 14 points, his most against SEC competition this year and one point off his SEC career high of 15 (last season at Kentucky).

Doughty led the Tigers with 23 points and Anfernee McLemore added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Arkansas hits the road for back-to-back games, facing Missouri Saturday (Feb. 8 at 2:30 pm) and Tennessee (Feb. 11 at 6 pm CT). Both games will be televised on the SEC Network.

First half notes

• Arkansas made its first three 3’s (two by Mason Jones and one by Adrio Bailey). The Hogs led 11-8 at the first media timeout.

• Down five (18-31), Jones and Desi Sills hit back-to-back 3’s before Jones followed with a jumper at the free throw line for an 8-0 run (4-of-4 from the field over 1:52) to put Arkansas up three (21-18) at the second media timeout (10;03). The run extended to 10-0 after the timeout. The run ended when Auburn hit two free throws at 8:45 (23-20).

• Arkansas then went on a 7-0 run, capped by a Sills 3-pointer, to force an Auburn timeout. Arkansas led 30-23 at 6:07.

• Auburn went on an 11-1 run to take a 34-30 lead. However, Jones ended the run with two free throws to make the score 34-32 in Auburn’s favor.

• Jones had 15 first-half points and three assists. Jimmy Whitt Jr. had five rebounds.

• Arkansas out-shot the Tigers 41.4% FG to 37.8% and made 6-of-12 3-pointers, compared to 4-of-16 for Auburn.

• The Razorbacks also had six steals while forcing nine turnovers.

Second half notes

• Arkansas scored the first five points of the second half to go up three, 37-34.

• The Razorbacks used a 7-0 run to take a 50-48 lead, highlighted by an ally-oop dunk from Mason Jones to Adrio Bailey at 11:34.

• Auburn tied the game at 50-50 before Arkansas used a 9-0 run and 59-50 lead (8:18).

• The Tigers went on an 8-0 run to tie the game, 66-66, with 2:53 left. Jones ended the drought with two free throws to give Arkansas a 68-66 lead.

• Auburn’s J’Von McCormick made a 3-pointer with 1:43 left to go up one 69-68.

• Jones made a free throw with 36 seconds left to tie the game, 69-69.

• Auburn ran the clock down and Adrio Bailey and Reggie Chaney “went vertical” and forced a shot clock violation.

• Arkansas had 6.5 seconds but could not convert to force overtime.

Game notes

• Arkansas’ starting lineup was Jimmy Whitt (G) – Desi Sills (G) –Mason Jones (G) – Reggie Chaney (F) – Adrio Bailey (F) for the first time this season. It was the fifth different starting lineup this season.

• Auburn won the tip for the 11th time in 22 games this season. Arkansas is 7-4 in such games.

• Auburn’s Samir Doughty scored the first points of the game, a jumper on the right block at 18:34. Mason Jones scored Arkansas’ first points, a 3-pointer from the left wing at 17:19. It was his 10th time to score the team’s first points of the game this season.

• Mason Jones now has seven career 30-point games, six this season. He has two, 40-ponit games this season. He is the first Razorback since Dean Tolson accomplished the feat in 1973-74.

• Arkansas now has eight games where a Razorback has scored at least 30 points. The last time Arkansas had a many as eight 30-point games in a season was having 10 in 1972-73 (all by Martin Terry).

• Arkansas had 14 steals. It was the second-most for the Razorbacks this season and the most since having 15 at Georgia Tech (Nov. 25).

• Arkansas only committed 10 turnovers for the game after having seven in the first half.

• Arkansas forced 18 turnovers. Arkansas has forced at least 15 turnovers in seven of its nine SEC games.

• In SEC games only, Arkansas entered the game in committing the fewest turnovers, forcing the most turnovers and assist-to-turnover ratio.

• Arkansas leads the NCAA in 3-point field goal percentage and held Auburn to 25.8% (6-of-31).

Musselman: ‘We just lost to No. 11 team in country’ after falling in overtime

Joe has knee surgery after MRI on Monday, will be out indefinitely for Razorbacks

Arkansas coach Eric Musselman announced before Tuesday night’s game with Auburn that sophomore guard Isaiah Joe will be out indefinitely after have his knee arthroscopically scraped.

“As I mentioned in the press conference Monday, Isaiah did have an MRI on his knee,” Musselman said in a press release. “The results came back late Monday and it was determined Isaiah would undergo surgery Tuesday. He will not be at the Auburn game tonight so he can recover and begin rehabilitation.”

The procedure, termed “arthroscopic debridement surgery” in the press release from the Razorbacks, is a procedure to scrape away scar tissue or similar issues, according to medical professionals.

Joe ranks fourth in the NCAA in 3-pointers made per game (3.60) and 12th nationally in total 3’s made (72).

Joe additionally leads the SEC in both categories while ranking second in the league in 3-point field goal percentage (.340).

The sophomore has made 185 3-pointers in just 54 career games and already ranks seventh on the school’s all-time list.

No. 21 Hogs set to open spring season at Sea Best Intercollegiate in Florida

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Arkansas’ men’s golf team is in 12th place with a 36-hole total of 582 (294-288) in the team’s opening event of the spring season, the Sea Best Intercollegiate played at TPC Sawgrass Dye’s Valley Course.

Tyson Reeder led the Razorbacks, shooting a 2-over-par 142 through two rounds Monday and standing in a tie for 25th.

In the morning session, the senior posted an even-par round of 70 thanks to three birdies and three bogeys. He followed that with a 2-over round of 72 in the afternoon.

Julian Perico is tied for 45th (145). He, like Reeder, carded three birdies in the morning session and fired a 74. In round two, Perico shot a 1-over-par 71 getting two birdies and an eagle on the 354-yard, par-4 third hole, one of six eagles turned in one day one.

Mason Overstreet is tied for 52nd with a 36-hole score of 147 (75-72). Luis Garza is one stroke behind Overstreet and tied for 57th with a two-round total of 147 (75-73).

William Buhl is tied for 70th (76-77=153). William McDonald, playing as an individual, is in 72nd with a score of 154 (79-75).

Texas A&M, ranked 12th nationally, leads the 14-team field with a 7-under-par, 36-hole score of 553, followed by 37 Florida (554), 13 North Carolina (560), 35 Liberty (562), 48 Campbell (566) and 31 North Florida (568).

Against Auburn

• This will be the 54th meeting between Arkansas and Auburn. The Razorbacks own a 34-19 advantage in the series, including a 34-18 cushion in games since Arkansas joined the SEC.

• Arkansas has won 10 of the last 13 in the series, although the teams have each won three of the last six. The last time Auburn came to Bud Walton Arena, the Tigers were ranked 14th but fell 91-82 as Jaylen Barford (20-10) and Daniel Gafford (21-10) each had double-doubles.

Last year at Auburn

• Bryce Brown scored 18 points and contributed five 3-pointers to Auburn’s long-range barrage in a 79-56 win over Arkansas.

• The Tigers made 5-of-their-first-6 from 3-point range and took a 22-1 lead to start the game. On the other end, Arkansas missed its first eight shots from the field until the 12:57 mark. Auburn ultimately built a 30-point lead and took a 45-20 lead into the locker room at halftime.

• Arkansas shuffled the lineup and showed some fight in the second half, out-scoring the Tigers 36-34, and committing just four turnovers while going 12-of-18 at the free throw line. Desi Sills led the change with nine points in the half.

• Overall, Auburn made 17-of-33 3-pointers while the Razorbacks were just 4-of-26.

• Brown made 5-of-8 3’s to lead four Auburn scorers in double figures. Anfernee McLemore scored 13 points while Chuma Okeke had 11 points and five assists. Jared Harper scored 10.

• Arkansas’ Isaiah Joe scored 14 points and Daniel Gafford had 10.

Jones is SEC scoring leader

• Mason Jones scored an SEC career-high 34 points — and added a career-high 12 rebounds — versus South Carolina to push him to the top of the SEC scoring list. He added 30 at Alabama to push his average to 19.8.

• Among the NCAA’s top-six, RPI-rated conferences (Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac 12, SEC and ACC), Jones ranks fourth nationally in scoring behind Marquette’s Markus Howard (27.9), Luke Garza of Iowa (23) and Myles Powell at Seton Hall (21.4).

• Arkansas has never had a player lead the SEC in scoring at season’s end.

•  Jones is the only player in the SEC to lead his team in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals. In fact, he is the only player in the SEC to rank among the top 20 in scoring (1st) and rebounds (15th) while ranking among the top 11 in steals (5th) and assists (11th).

Jones earns third SEC player of the week honor

• Mason Jones had a pair of 30-point games and was rewarded for a third time by being named the SEC men’s basketball co-player of the week, the league announced Monday. Jones shared the honor with Mississippi State’s Reggie Perry.

• For the week, Jones averaged 32 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals against South Carolina and Alabama.

• Jones is the only three-time player of the week honoree this season.

Nothing but NET

• Arkansas is 1-of-4 SEC teams and 1-of-10 teams nationally who have played two or fewer games against teams ranked above 200 in the NET. The other SEC teams include Mississippi State, Alabama and Florida.

Others nationally including West Virginia, California, Duke, Georgia Tech, Minnesota and Oregon. West Virginia has played only one game versus a team with a 200-plus NET ranking.

Taking care of the ball in SEC play

• Since SEC play began, Arkansas has taken care of the ball and shared the ball better than the non-conference season. In league play, the Hogs have 88 assists, a league-high 59 steals, a league-low 77 turnovers and a league-high 120 turnovers forced.

• In SEC play, Arkansas leads the league in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.1).

• In SEC play, Arkansas is the only team to average single-digit turnovers (9.6/gm) while forcing the most turnovers (15.0/gm).

• In SEC play, Arkansas leads the league in turnover margin (+5.4). The next closest is Florida at +1.4.

Joe named finalist for this year’s ‘Jerry West’ award to top shooting guard

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas sophomore Isaiah Joe was named one of 10 finalists for the 2020 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced today.

In March, the list will be narrowed to five finalists and presented to Mr. West and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee.

The winner of the 2020 Jerry West Award will be presented at The College Basketball Awards presented by Wendy’s in Los Angeles, Calif., on Friday, April 10, 2020, along with the other four members of the Men’s Starting Five (Bob Cousy Point Guard Award, Julius Erving Small Forward Award, Karl Malone Power Forward Award and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center Award).

New to this year’s program is the Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies.

Starting on Friday, February 7, fans will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite players by logging on to www.hoophallawards.com. The top 5 player selections on the fan vote will get an additional vote towards making the next round.

Among active NCAA Division I players, Joe ranks third by making 3.43 3-pointers per game for his career.
