Arkansas football hits the road for the first time this season, and it’s landing in a place the program has never visited.
The Razorbacks meet No. 20 Utah on Saturday night in a matchup between two teams looking to build early momentum.
Kickoff happens inside Rice-Eccles Stadium, with television coverage starting at 9:15 p.m. on ESPN.
This trip comes right after a solid debut for new coach Ryan Silverfield, who led the Hogs to a win over North Alabama on Sept. 5 at Razorback Stadium.
Now the Hogs get their first true test on the road under the new staff.
Saturday’s game also carries a bit of history.
The 9:25 p.m. kickoff ties the latest starting time in Arkansas history, matching the Razorbacks’ trip to USC back on Sept. 17, 2005.
A roster built on new faces
Arkansas enters this season with a completely different look.
The Razorbacks feature 81 newcomers this fall, including 36 new offensive players, 40 new defensive players and five new specialists. Just 40 players return from a year ago, split between 22 offensive players, 15 defensive players and three specialists.
That kind of turnover puts a lot of pressure on new pieces to step up fast, and a couple of them already have.
DB Khmori House, a transfer from North Carolina, showed why he earned All-ACC honors last season.
He led the Tar Heels in tackles a year ago, then opened his Arkansas career with three tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack against North Alabama.
WR Chris Marshall made an instant impact too.
The Boise State transfer caught seven passes for 79 yards in the opener, the most receptions by any SEC receiver during week one and good enough for 22nd among all FBS receivers.
Marshall, a Missouri City, Texas native, is expected to be Arkansas’ top target after posting 30 catches for 574 yards and two touchdowns with the Broncos last season.
Numbers that stand out
Arkansas controlled the clock against North Alabama, holding the ball for 41 minutes and 25 seconds.
That’s the most time of possession for the Hogs since a 2017 win over New Mexico State.
Silverfield has gone 31-12 in his career when winning the time of possession battle.
The Razorbacks also kept a long-running streak alive. Arkansas has now scored in 59 straight games, the sixth-longest streak in program history.
The Hogs haven’t been shut out since a 2021 loss to Georgia.
QB KJ Jackson turned in a strong debut under center.
He completed 24 of 35 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns, becoming the ninth Arkansas quarterback since 1995 to throw three or more touchdowns in a season opener.
He’s also the first left-handed quarterback to start a season opener for Arkansas since Barry Lunney Jr. in 1995.
A defense making its own history
The Razorbacks’ defense had a moment worth noting too. Arkansas didn’t allow a single yard in the first quarter against North Alabama, the first time that’s happened since 2014.
The kicking game keeps rolling as well, with 231 straight extra points made dating back to December 2020, the longest active streak in the country by date.
Utah won’t be an easy follow-up.
Ten of Arkansas’ 12 regular-season opponents were ranked or received votes in the preseason poll, including Georgia, Texas, Texas A&M, LSU, Tennessee and Utah itself.
A win Saturday would give Arkansas its first road victory over a ranked non-conference opponent since beating TCU in double overtime back in 2016.
That’s the kind of milestone the Hogs hope keeps building as this new era takes shape in Salt Lake City.
