Six points.
That’s all that separated No. 16 Arkansas from Tennessee when the scores went final at the Gans Creek Classic on Friday in Columbia, Missouri.
The Razorbacks finished with 69 points. The Volunteers posted 75.
Nobody else was in the neighborhood. Wichita State took third with 170.
The difference came right at the front. Ernest Cheruiyot won the 8,000-meter race in 22:32.8. Nick Busienei was right behind him in 22:34.0.
Tennessee didn’t have an answer for that. Its top two runners placed eighth and ninth.
The Vols actually ran a little tighter after that. Their scoring order was 8-9-14-16-28. Arkansas went 1-2-13-17-36.
Two Hogs set pace from start
Cheruiyot and Busienei didn’t wait around. They led the field at every 1-kilometer mark.
Through 4 kilometers, just a tenth of a second split them. Cheruiyot hit 11:05.1 and Busienei was at 11:05.2.
Cheruiyot started to pull away after that. He was 6.3 seconds up at 7 kilometers, but Busienei chopped most of that gap down over the last stretch.
Wichita State’s Nicholas Kipchirchir was the closest outsider. He placed third in 22:40.5.
Cheruiyot’s time now ranks fourth all-time on the Gans Creek course and in the Classic. Busienei’s mark sits fifth on both lists.
Only three runners have gone faster. Washington State’s Solomon Kipchoge owns the meet and course record of 22:24.7 from 2025.
Iowa State’s Joash Ruto ran 22:32.0. Tulane’s Bernard Cheruiyot clocked 22:32.4 at the 2025 Classic.
The rest of scoring five
James Sankei was Arkansas’ third scorer. He placed 13th in 23:00.9.
Allen Bonnesen came in 17th at 23:15.9.
Trey Caldwell rounded out the scoring in 36th with a 23:35.4.
Trenton Sandler placed 53rd in 23:53.9. Gavin Genisio followed in 74th at 24:03.5.
Jackson Free ran 24:13.1. Eli Seavey finished in 24:33.0 and Timothy Chesondin clocked 24:56.4.
The Hogs also had two runners in the Open race. Owan Logorodi placed 10th in 25:21.1 and Dawson Welch crossed in 27:40.3.
A crowded field behind them
Missouri hosted the eighth annual meet. It drew 30 teams.
Colorado School of Mines placed fourth with 175 points. Ole Miss was fifth at 202.
No. 28 Missouri scored 230 as the host. Florida State, Colorado State, Illinois and No. 30 Kansas filled out the top 10 with 253, 265, 269 and 273 points, in that order.
That means two ranked teams finished more than 150 points behind the Razorbacks.
Next up is a trip home. Arkansas will run the Chile Pepper Festival on Saturday, Oct. 3, at Agri Park in Fayetteville.
Home course and hot peppers. Not a bad way to follow up a title.
