Razorbacks land Georgia safety Jameer Cantrell over four SEC rivals

Jameer Cantrell made his college decision known on Friday night, picking Arkansas over a group of SEC programs that wanted him badly.

The safety from Buford, Ga., chose the Razorbacks over Florida, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest. He’s now part of the Hogs’ growing 2027 recruiting class.

Cantrell didn’t make this pick on a whim. He’d built a relationship with Arkansas coach Deron Wilson that started long before Wilson ever set foot in Fayetteville.

“I mean, Coach Deron, he’s been recruiting me since he was at Florida. When he left Florida, he took me in at the new staff at Arkansas, and we’ve been talking ever since then,” Cantrell told 247Sports. “I’ll say about two to three weeks ago I kind of knew out that it was going to be them. I really like our bond with me and Coach Deron. I mean, we really get along great, and the way they brought me in.”

That bond mattered more than anything else once decision time came around.

A visit that sealed the deal

Cantrell took his official visit to Arkansas the weekend of June 12. He’d planned on checking out Wake Forest too, with a trip set for this weekend.

But after spending time in Fayetteville, he didn’t feel like he needed to see anywhere else.

He’d actually told the Arkansas coaching staff earlier in June that he planned on becoming a Razorback. The official visit just made it official in his own mind.

“They were very excited. They were really happy to get me up there and to commit to playing football with them,” Cantrell told 247Sports. “I mean, I like what they’re building. I mean, they brought in a whole new team, new staff. They’re really starting over. I really see the potential that they have coming in.”

That mention of a fresh coaching staff says a lot about where Cantrell sees this program headed. He’s buying into a rebuild, not just a roster spot.

Cantrell’s recruiting profile

Cantrell stands between 5-foot-10 and 5-foot-11 depending on the source and weighs around 175 to 180 pounds.

He’s rated a three-star prospect, landing as the No. 84 safety nationally and the No. 99 overall player in Georgia in the 247Sports composite for the 2027 class.

Buford has turned into something of a pipeline for Arkansas. Cantrell becomes the second player from the school to commit to the Hogs in as many cycles, following offensive lineman Ben Mubenga in the 2026 class.

His commitment pushes Arkansas to either 19 or 20 pledges in the 2027 cycle, depending on the tracker, and the Razorbacks now sit around No. 32 in the 247Sports team recruiting rankings with a composite score of 198.77.

The Hogs keep stacking pieces on the back end of their defense, and Cantrell gives the staff another long-term option at safety as the class rounds into shape heading into the dead period.
