Ryan Silverfield not fully pleased despite Arkansas season-opening win

A win is a win, but Saturday’s 31-14 season opener over North Alabama probably didn’t sit well with anyone at Razorback Stadium.

Fans, players and even the coaching staff had reasons to leave the stadium not satisfied after the Razorbacks piled up eight flags and gave the ball away three times against a team from a lower level of competition.

That group includes Ryan Silverfield, who got his first win in charge of the Razorbacks but didn’t look thrilled about how it came together. At halftime he looked surprised by what he’d just watched.

Silverfield wasn’t shy about it afterward, either. Speaking with reporters after the game, he made it clear the sloppy stretches bothered him, even with a win in hand.

None of that means Silverfield isn’t happy to be 1-0.

Nobody expects a coach to knock a victory in his Arkansas debut, and he won’t. But the frustration was obvious in the moment, and it started well before the final whistle.

Arkansas leaned on ball control to get the job done.

The offense moved the chains on more than half its third-down tries and kept North Alabama’s defense on the field for most of the afternoon, which helped limit the Lions to just 153 total yards.

Quarterback KJ Jackson had his moments too, throwing for 267 yards and three scores on 24 completions, but a pair of turnovers on his end kept the offense from pulling away sooner.

A halftime interview said it all

Arkansas led just 14-0 at the break, a margin that felt thin given how much time the Hogs spent on offense.

Silverfield’s midfield TV interview at halftime gave everyone watching a preview of his mood.

He called the first-half offense “terrible,” a blunt assessment for a team that had just outgained North Alabama by triple digits in yardage but still made it look difficult.

The first quarter explained a lot of that stuff putting him in a bad mood. The halftime locker room was probably interesting but we probably won’t get to see much of that.

Arkansas’ opening drive nearly ended in a turnover on third and eight, and the second drive died at midfield on a dropped fourth-down pass. The Razorback defense bailed the offense out early, forcing a three-and-out on North Alabama’s first series without star rusher Quincy Rhodes Jr. even seeing the field.

Arkansas eventually got on the board with a 20-yard touchdown catch from Ismael Cisse, coming with 36 seconds left in the opening quarter.

It was a nice moment, and a historic one too, since Arkansas hadn’t held a team without positive yardage through one quarter since a 2014 game against LSU.

Still, the offense’s early struggles were the story Silverfield couldn’t shake. Mainly because his focal obsession of protecting the ball and not making unforced errors apparently hadn’t made it to the season.

More mistakes than a coach wants to see

The second quarter didn’t fully calm things down.

Arkansas pushed the lead to 14-0 on a touchdown pass to tight end Matt Adcock, aided by a gutsy fourth-down conversion from Jelani Watkins. Linebacker Ben Bogle had a strong debut with four tackles and a pass breakup.

The closing minutes of the half were rough.

Jackson lost the ball on a strip-sack, and even though the defense forced a fumble right back for Arkansas, Jackson threw a costly interception before the break.

That sequence is a big reason Silverfield wasn’t smiling walking off the field at halftime and it was expounded on his post-game press conference.

Arkansas answered in the third quarter to push the lead to 21-0.

Jackson sold a handoff fake to Sutton Smith before finding Jaden Platt in the back of the end zone, and the tight end came down with a diving grab for the score.

The defense chipped in too, with each of Khmori House and Charlie Collins bringing down the North Alabama quarterback for a sack on the day.

North Alabama chipped away late in the third quarter, scoring on a Destin Wade touchdown run after Arkansas penalties helped set up good field position. That made it 21-7 heading into the fourth.

What the numbers said about the sloppiness

Braylen Russell scored on a short run early in the fourth quarter to make it 28-7.

Wade answered again for North Alabama after a long completion down the field set up his second rushing touchdown, trimming the gap to 28-14.

Arkansas finally put it away with a long, clock-eating drive that ended in a 33-yard field goal from Max Gilbert, sealing the 31-14 final.

By the end, Arkansas had outgained North Alabama by a wide margin and cleared 400 yards for the game on offense alone. But the box score backed up Silverfield’s frustration anyway.

Eight Arkansas penalties, three turnovers and a stretch where the offense couldn’t find any rhythm added up to a game that should’ve been more comfortable than it was.

North Alabama wasn’t much cleaner, picking up nine flags on the day too, a sign of just how messy the afternoon got for both sidelines.

Receiver Chris Marshall caught seven passes and picked up 79 yards through the air, and Sutton Smith carried a heavy workload with 19 total touches that also added up to 79 yards from scrimmage.

Those contributions kept the offense moving even when it wasn’t clicking the way Silverfield wanted.

Arkansas leaves its opener 1-0, and that’s the part that matters most in the standings.

But between the halftime interview with Silverfield’s reaction and his comments to reporters afterward, it’s clear he expects a cleaner effort moving forward.

He just probably won’t be celebrating much over winning the opener the way they did.
