Offensive explosion paces Hogs to finally an easy win

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Nick Smith Jr., scored a season-high 26 points, making five 3-pointers, and Ricky Council IV pumped in 21, making three 3-pointers to lead Arkansas to an 87-65 victory over Georgia Tuesday night at Bud Walton Arena.

• Arkansas made a season-high 11 3-pointers (20 attempts)

• Arkansas committed a season-low five turnovers. It was just the third time Arkansas had single-digit turnovers this year, committing nine each versus Creighton and Oklahoma.

Kario Oquendo led Georgia with 20 points. Jabri Abdur-Rahim added 12 points and Justin Hill had 10 points.

Arkansas will play its next two games on the road starting Saturday (Feb. 25) at Alabama. Tipoff is set for 1 pm (CT) and the game will be televised on ESPN2.

Razorbacks dig out of early hole to finally subdue Grambling

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — No. 9 Arkansas (3-1) overcame a five-run deficit and survived a scare against SWAC foe Grambling (1-3), pulling out a 9-7 win on Tuesday afternoon in a rare midweek home opener at Baum-Walker Stadium.

Playing at home for the first time in 282 days, the Razorbacks came out flat. Grambling scored two in the first, one in the third and three more in the fourth, cracking open a 6-1 lead before Arkansas could begin to find its rhythm offensively.

The Hogs showed signs of life in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to leadoff single by Kendall Diggs. Diggs advanced to second on a wild pitch before Jace Bohrofen’s double to right center brought him home, and Bohrofen would later score on Parker Rowland’s groundout as Arkansas started to trim its deficit.

Trailing by four in the fifth, the Razorbacks scored runs on reigning SEC Player of the Week Jared Wegner’s RBI single and Brady Slavens’ RBI double to make it a two-run game.

Tavian Josenberger, who went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, two runs batted in and two walks, kept the pressure on in the sixth with his RBI double to cut the gap to one.

The Hogs would even the ballgame at seven apiece in the bottom of the seventh, when Bohrofen’s sacrifice fly to center brought home Wegner from third. The hard-earned comeback was completed in the eighth with Josenberger’s go-ahead RBI sacrifice fly followed by Stovall’s RBI sacrifice fly, putting Arkansas up, 9-7, for good.

Arkansas totaled four sacrifice flies, their most since recording four against Mississippi Valley State in a 20-0 win on Feb. 24, 2016. Wegner, Bohrofen, Josenberger and Stovall each picked up an RBI sacrifice fly in Tuesday’s victory.

On the mound, right-handers Koty Frank (2.2 IP, 3 SO) and Brady Tygart (2.0 IP, 4 SO) worked together to pitch the final 4.2 innings of the game. The duo silenced Grambling, limiting the Tigers to just two hits while combining for seven strikeouts as Tygart earned his first win of the season.

Their strong performances out of the bullpen were a stark contrast from the work of the Razorbacks’ first three pitchers of the game, who combined to allow seven runs on 11 hits and four walks.

The Hogs, who had not played a midweek home opener since 2003, are now 2-0 in such games under Dave Van Horn. That season, Arkansas hosted Creighton on a Tuesday (Feb. 11, 2003) at what was formerly known as Baum Stadium and defeated the Bluejays, 9-5, in Van Horn’s first game as the Razorback head coach.

Arkansas’ 18-game homestand continues with a three-game set against Eastern Illinois in the first home weekend series of the season. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, on SEC Network+.

In the Polls

Arkansas remained ranked by all six major college baseball polls following the opening week of the season:

Perfect Game – No. 3
USA Today Coaches – No. 6
Collegiate Baseball – No. 7
NCBWA – No. 7
D1Baseball – No. 9
Baseball America – No. 11

Road Warriors

It has been 282 days since Arkansas’ last home game. The last time the Hogs played inside the friendly confines of Baum-Walker Stadium was in a 5-0 loss in seven innings to SEC East foe Vanderbilt on May 15, 2022.

The Razorbacks have played 19 consecutive games away from home since then, traveling to five different states in that span — Alabama, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Nebraska and Texas.

Home Sweet Home

Tuesday’s home opener against Grambling will mark the start of an 18-game homestand, the Hogs’ longest stretch of consecutive games at home since 1982.

That season, Arkansas played 22 straight games at George Cole Field to begin the year and finished the campaign with a 40-15-2 overall record.

1982 also marked head coach Dave Van Horn’s first — and only — season as a Razorback.

A standout infielder, Van Horn earned All-Southwest Conference honors, including Newcomer of the Year accolades, and was selected as the Hogs’ most valuable player that season.

Poppin’ Off

Arkansas outfielder Jared Wegner was named the SEC Player of the Week following a huge weekend in the College Baseball Showdown to begin his Razorback career.

Wegner slashed .545/.643/1.365 (6-for-11) with four extra-base hits, including two home runs, and eight RBI over three games at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

Wegner had at least one hit, reached base at least twice and scored at least one run in all three games, leading the Hogs to wins over Texas and TCU.

In Friday’s season-opening win against Texas, the graduate transfer from Creighton went 1-for-3 with a walk and run scored.

He followed up that performance with a 3-for-4 night against TCU on Saturday, recording a double, a home run and three RBI against the Horned Frogs.

His finish to the weekend was even louder. The Kearney, Neb., native went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a triple, a home run and a weekend-high five RBI in Arkansas’ run-rule win over Oklahoma State on Sunday afternoon.
