The Morning Rush is LIVE. Yesterday, Anthony Black declared for the NBA Draft. Thoughts?
Razorbacks’ hot start fades fast in big loss to Little Rock
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — No. 5 Arkansas (26-7) extended its streak of consecutive games with a home run to 29 in an 11-4 loss to Little Rock (18-12) on Wednesday afternoon at Baum-Walker Stadium.
Jace Bohrofen, who homered for the second consecutive game, and Brady Slavens each hit round-trippers in Wednesday’s setback against the Trojans.
The Razorbacks, now 15-2 all-time against in-state opponents, has homered in 29 consecutive games this season, the longest active home run streak among all SEC programs.
The Hogs’ pair of homers both came in the bottom of the second inning, helping Arkansas jump out to a quick 3-0 lead. Bohrofen’s solo blast was his eighth of the season, while Slavens’ two-run dinger was his fourth of the year.
Bohrofen collected a team-leading two hits and two RBI in the contest, raising his season slash line to .422/.551/.745. Slavens, meanwhile, also had a two-hit, two-RBI day at the plate and is now slashing .291/.350/.491 on the year.
Despite the early fireworks, Arkansas’ hot start would not last long as Little Rock punched back with three runs in the top half of the third to even the game at three apiece.
Hogs starter Ben Bybee went three innings on the mound, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and a pair of walks while striking out a career-high six batters.
With the game tied at three, the Trojans broke through for three runs in the top of the sixth before tacking on four more in the seventh and one more in the eighth. Little Rock hammered the Hogs’ bullpen for eight runs (five earned) on 10 hits and five walks to take control of the ballgame.
Little Rock pitcher Jacob Weatherley emerged from the bullpen and threw 4 2/3 innings of one-run ball on 107 pitches in relief to preserve the Trojans’ win. The right-hander struck out six while allowing two hits and issuing five walks.
Arkansas continues its five-game week at home against SEC Eastern Division foe No. 16 Tennessee this weekend.
First pitch of the three-game series between the Hogs and Volunteers from inside Baum-Walker Stadium is set for 7 p.m. Friday on the SEC Network with Dave Neal (play-by-play) and Kyle Peterson (analyst) on the call.

Anthony Black headed for NBA, now dominoes can begin falling
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The announcement by Anthony Black he’s headed to the NBA Draft probably shouldn’t be surprising.
There had been a glimmer of hope with some social media postings and wandering thoughts that were never really going to be much more than “what-if.”
Deep down, though, it’s doubtful many folks thought the 6-7 freshman point guard would return to Arkansas.

Now we will see what Razorbacks coach Eric Musselman does putting this roster together.
Black is projected to go in the lottery of the first 14 picks, where there is a lottery of teams having chances to determine the preferred early order of picks.
If Nick Smith Jr., who declared his eligibility for the draft, is taken in that first round it would be the first time in school history they’ve had two players taken that high.
It might be even more important now with just two rounds of the draft.
Right after the announcement, Razorbacks basketball took to social media to thank Black for the big year.

The Duncanville (Texas) native was one of three McDonald’s All-American signees on this year’s team.
H led the SEC in minutes played and finished the regular season third on the team and third among qualifying SEC freshmen in scoring at 12.8 points per game on 45.3 percent shooting from the field and a 30.1 percent clip from beyond the arc. Black led the Hogs in total assists (141) and steals (74) while stuffing the stat sheet across the board with 5.1 rebounds per game and 22 blocked shots from the point guard position.
According to HogStats, he is the only player in Arkansas basketball men’s basketball history to reach 450 points, 180 rebounds and 140 assists in a season. He set Arkansas freshman records in steals (74), steals per game (2.06), minutes (1,253), free throw attempts (190) and starts (36).
It’s going to be a big hole to fill.
The news came at roughly the same time as an anticipated announcement that Temple guard Khalif Battle committed to the Hogs.

Now we get to see how the rest of this shakes out after Devo Davis and Ricky Council IV also declared for the draft. Leaving through the transfer portal are Makhel Mitchell.
The volume-scorer had a four-game stretch in November where he scored more than 22 points in each contest. In late-January and early-February, he did himself one better with a five-game run of 20-plus point performances.
Battle dropped a season-high 27 points on two separate occasions against VCU and at SMU. He went for 24 points on 6-of-12 shooting with four three-pointers against Houston on Feb. 5. In total, Battle scored over 20 points in 13 games on the season.
For Razorback fans clamoring for more perimeter shooting, Battle made multiple three-pointers in 24 of 27 games for the Owls last season. He connected on four or more triples eight times, including a season-high six threes on 11 attempts against Richmond on Nov. 22. Volume and accuracy are both present in his game.

Hogs have 21-5 win over Little Rock in run-rule game
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — No. 5 Arkansas (26-6) throttled Little Rock (17-12), 21-5, in seven innings on Tuesday night at Baum-Walker Stadium to secure its eighth midweek win of the year and improve to 15-1 all-time against in-state foes.
The Razorbacks’ 21 runs mark the most they have scored in a game this season. Arkansas drew 15 walks, also a season high, and extended its streak of consecutive games with a home run to 28 in Tuesday night’s thrashing of the Trojans.
Arkansas scored nine in the bottom half of the first inning to take control of the ballgame, providing its pitching staff with plenty of run support. Jace Bohrofen, who finished the game 2-for-2 with three runs scored and a team-leading four RBI, collected two of his runs batted in on a single and a sacrifice fly during the Hogs’ explosive first inning.
Bohrofen came up to the plate again in the bottom of the third and socked a two-run homer to left, adding two more RBI to his total while extending the Razorbacks’ lead to 13-2. Later in the inning, Harold Coll swatted a two-run homer of his own to center, growing the Hogs’ advantage to 13.
The Razorback offense was far from finished, however, tacking on five more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Coll and Kendall Diggs, who entered the game as a pinch hitter and finished 2-for-2 with an RBI, each recorded run-scoring singles as Arkansas opened up an insurmountable lead.
Five Razorback batters, including Bohrofen, Coll and Diggs, posted multi-hit games in the lopsided win. Caleb Cali (2-for-3) and Peyton Holt (2-for-4) also tallied multiple base knocks on Tuesday night.
Seven Arkansas batters, meanwhile, logged multi-RBI games, led by Bohrofen’s four-RBI effort. Coll and Hunter Grimes each had three RBI in the win, while Cali, Holt, Tavian Josenberger and Hudson Polk drove in two runs apiece.
On the mound, Cody Adcock started for the Hogs and spun four innings of two-run ball to improve to 3-1 on the year. The right-hander struck out one while allowing five hits and issuing three walks before giving way to the bullpen.
True freshman left-hander Sean Fitzpatrick was impressive in relief for the Razorbacks, twirling two scoreless innings with three strikeouts to preserve the 21-5 run-rule win.
Arkansas and Little Rock conclude their two-game midweek series tomorrow afternoon at Baum-Walker Stadium. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, on SEC Network+ as the Hogs look to improve to 22-2 at home on the year.
