Razorbacks fall to Vandy, but back into share of SEC title

Arkansas will take a share of the SEC title, even if they backed into it after an 8-7 loss at Vanderbilt on Saturday afternoon that ended the regular season with a thurd.

LSU’s loss at Georgia earlier on Saturday guaranteed at least a share of the title, but Razorbacks coach Dave Van Horn was probably trying to win it outright. They’ll take the title, though, not that it particularly means a whole lot outside of the bragging rights in some historical stats.

It leaves the Hogs with a 39-15 overall record (20-10 in the SEC). Now they have the SEC Tournament next week in Hoover, Ala., and the Hogs will be the No. 2 seed in that tournament. We won’t find out about NCAA seedings until next MOnday after the conference tournaments, but there likely will be NCAA games as far as the Hogs play until they go to Omaha, if they win the regional and Super Regional.

Hunter Hollan started on the mound for the Hogs and he wasn’t as sharp, giving up eight hits in 2.2 innings and giving up four earned runs. Will McEntire then came on and didn’t allow any runs, giving up just a solo hit before turning it over deeper in the bullpen, when the trail to the bullpen heated up.

Parker Coil worked .1 of an inning and gave up three earned runs on three hits and struggled mightily before giving way to Gage Wood, who was a little more effective than Saturday night working .2 of an inning and not yielding any runs

The Hogs got things rolling in the second with Caleb Cali drawing a one-out walk, moving to second on Brady Slaven’s single and scoring when Peyton Holt hit a grounder to short that was thrown into right field. Slavens scored on a sacrifice fly by Harold Coll to right field for a 2-0 lead.

Vanderbilt took the lead in the bottom of the second inning scoring quickly and Tony LaNeve added a two-run homer for a 3-2 lead.

The Hogs went down quietly in the third and fourth innings, but the Commodores added another run in the bottom of the fourth.

Finally (at least for fans), they got things rolling in the fifth. Tavian Josenberger led off with a single, stole second and Kendall Digg’s liner up the middle got him home. Then Diggs scored when Cali hit a grounder the Commodores tried to field, but he scored after getting moved over to third on a double off the wall by Jared Wegner. That made it 4-2 and they added another run on a single by Slavens and Holt got him home on another single and a 6-4 lead.

That lead disappeared when the Razorbacks’ pitching circus started again in the seventh inning as the Commodores scored three runs to take the lead back, 7-6. The Hogs used Parker Coil and Gage Wood trying to hang on.

The Hogs leave a couple of baserunners in the eighth after Harold Coll led off getting hit by a pitch and Ben McLaughlin drew walks but they couldn’t advance as the bats couldn’t do anything with Vandy’s pitching. The Commodores couldn’t do anything with the bat against Cody Adcock, who settled things down on the mound for the Hogs.

It ended after Cali’s one-out single was followed by a double-play ground ball from Slavens.

Razorbacks blow six-run lead in 10-8 stunner Friday night at Vandy

Arkansas had a shot to lock down an SEC regular-season title Friday night in Nashville and blew an 8-2 lead in the eighth inning and a 10-8 loss. The Razorbacks were cruising into the eighth and the SEC Network jinxed the whole thing, talking about locking down the title and making Sunday’s game “a wash.”

All of that was before the Hogs’ pitching couldn’t get anybody out and they tried just about everybody available. Dave Van Horn really did everything he could to get a win in that game. Now Saturday’s series final at 2 p.m. on SEC Network+ to decide a lot.

The loss kept the Hogs from getting a 40th overall win (now 39-14 overall, 20-9 in the SEC). As usual, things across the league will come down to the final day of the season before the league tournament.

Brady Tygart started and threw 62 pitches over four innings and gave up just two hits and a couple of earned runs and struck out seven, but didn’t walk anybody. After that it was a free-for-all.

The Razorbacks got started early with the second batter of the game, Jace Bohrofen, laced a home run, which was followed by a walk from Jared Wegner, a single by Kendall Diggs and Caleb Cali hit a double that scored another run. Diggs was thrown out at home trying to score on the play.

Brady Slavens made it 3-0 driving in Cali with a single before the Commodores could figure a way out of the inning.

Vanderbilt finally got on the board with a third-inning massive home run by T.J. McKenzie was followed by two in a row as Enrique Bradfield that cut the lead to 3-2. Both homers cleared the big wall in left field and were the first signs of trouble Tygart has really seen since making his return from elbow surgery a couple of weeks ago.

In the fourth inning, Slavens got a one-out double that was followed by Holt’s double to score him, making it a 4-2 lead.

Holt blasted a three-run homer in the top of the sixth over all the stands in left-center field that scored Diggs and Cali, who had delivered back-to-back singles. That gave the Hogs a little 7-2 lead.

In the eighth inning, Holt (who else lately?) had a pitch glaze his arm, then advanced to second on a wild pitch by Bryce Cunningham and made another headfirst slide into home on a single by John Wood for an 8-2 lead.

Gage Wood came into the game in the eighth and promptly helped contribute to creating his own mess of a bases-loaded situation with one out. First, he knocked a ball down in self-defense and failed to take control of a bunt that was popped up to the side of the pitcher’s mound. He caught a break on a blooper into center where John Bolton and Peyton Holt ran into each other, but Bolton managed to make a catch, but they scored to cut the lead to 8-3.

The Commodores then loaded the bases again with one out and Wood walked in a run hitting a batter and the tying run came to the plate. Van Horn sort of dragged out bringing in Cody Adcock, who promptly walked in another run. Vandy got a single to make things interesting and cut the lead to one, 8-7.

Van Horn moved quickly to bring in Parker Coil and his first pitch was deposited over the center-field wall by Troy LaNeve for a grand-slam homer and a 10-8 lead. The Commodores rang up eight runs in the eighth.

The Hogs got a single in the ninth and Kendall Diggs was robbed of a homer to center by Enrique Bradfield, Jr., but the Commodores made the lead hold up to lock down a bye in the SEC Tournament next week.

Derrian Ford makes his choice for new destination

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Derrian Ford has found a surprising landing spot out of the transfer portal and he’s staying within the state of Arkansas. No, he’s not coming back to the Razorbacks (who knows if that was even an option), but will be going to Arkansas State.

Probably not a lot of folks had that picked on their bingo card for the freshman who played sparingly for the Hogs last season. An announcement that he was transferring wasn’t that surprising, but the destination is to a lot of people.

Ford had offers from Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and ASU among a host of other teams. LSU and Alabama were two that recruited him the hardest. New Red Wolves coach Bryan Hodgson was an assistant with the Crimson Tide during Ford’s recruitment.

Arkansas State finished last season 13-20 overall and 4-14 in league games. Hodgson brings a level of energy to Jonesboro that hasn’t been seen in awhile, if ever.

Ford was a two-time Gatorade Arkansas Player of the Year and led the program to three state championships. He averaged 23.1 points, 6.3 rebounds and three assists per game as a senior.

He played 80 minutes in 21 games and had 15 points and 10 rebounds. He saw the floor for a season-high 16 minutes in the Razorbacks’ loss at Vanderbilt on Jan. 14.

Ford scored a season-best four points in nine minutes in the team’s loss at Missouri on Jan. 18. The 6-3 guard had a three-assist game against San Jose State in December, and had a pair of assists in wins over North Carolina-Asheville and Georgia.

Ford finished with a single point, a single rebound and just one assist in five minutes in Arkansas’ Sweet 16 loss to Connecticut in Las Vegas.
