Souza lifts Razorbacks to series’ sweep over Ole Miss
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — This was Nolan Souza’s game in the finale for Arkansas against Ole Miss. When he hit the second home run of the day in the seventh inning, that became clear with a 416-foot shot into the teeth of a strong wind blowing directly in holding flies up all day. The 7-4 win Saturday was just another part of a “Hawaiian Connection” as he and Wehiwa Aloy tag-teamed the Rebels into an SEC sweep, their third of the season.
Souza was 3-for-5 on the day with 5 RBI and those two massive homers. Just to help out, Aloy was 2-for-4 at the plate and scored a run.
“You guys and the ‘Hawaiian Connection,'” Van Horn said, chuckling.
He knows, though, they have been a big part of a dramatic run that is historic to start the season. A lot of it has been at home and now they are going on the road in the SEC next weekend.
Don’t bring any of that to Van Horn. He just chuckles when you recite stats and remind him what’s happened. He’s not going to be rude, but it is what it is right now.
“It’s great,” Van Horn said, laughing. ” I don’t know what else to tell you.”
Souza’s second homer gave the Hogs a 6-3 lead. After that, it was a parade of Rebels to the mound and a case of throwing the ball around the infield turning into a big problem. Mainly because the ball was in play at that moment and a wild throw into center field set things up to bring catcher Hudson White home for a 7-3 lead.
The third inning is one Van Horn will want to get back for a while. Most of it was brought about as it appeared Ole Miss starter Mason Nichols was doing his best to avoid throwing over the plate. The Hogs’ Kendall Driggs led off with a single to right and Ross Lovich grounded out, then a parade of free passes started.
Three walks around a double by Peyton Stovall somehow never got a run across the plate, even with the bases loaded and one out. Souza finally broke the standoff with a 404-foot homer to right-center field into the teeth of a fairly stiff breeze coming out of the the south. That gave Arkansas a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
The Rebels took the lead in the top of the fifth on a towering pop-up by Andrew Fischer that hung in the wind and came down about six feet from where Jared Sprague-Lott and Aloy were planning. The ball bounced off the heel of Aloy’s glove and allowed a run to score.
Ole Miss added another run and chased Brady Tygart after he struck out seven and walked three on 82 pitches. Jake Faherty came on with runners on the corners and got out without things getting worse.
Arkansas took control immediately. Singes by Diggs, Aloy and Souza took the lead back, 3-2, in the bottom of the fifth as both teams started to get into the mound staffs. The Rebels tied things up the following inning after Judd Utermark lead off with a double and scored on a by Trenton Lyons single off reliever Parker Coil.
The Hogs did have to face the tying run at the plate when Will McEntire finished off the game on a called check swing. The Razorbacks, now 27-3 on the season and 11-1 in the SEC, will host San Jose State in a pair of midweek games. The first one will be at 6 p,m, on Tuesday and 3 p.m. on Wednesday. Both games will air on ESPN+.

Wood, bullpen carry Razorbacks to series-clinching win over Rebels
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — At some point the word dominance is going to come into play with these Arkansas Razorbacks, but don’t draw Dave Van Horn there, yet. He got to see a different approach Friday night in an 8-3 win over the Ole Miss Rebels to clinch the series.
The Hogs are making it a habit on these series, but with starter Mason Molina being off a little bit, the bullpen and hitting carried the day in this one. The Razorbacks have won their first seven weekend series of the season and expanded their home winning streak to 20 games. That’s a program record.
“That game was all about a great job by our bullpen and some timely hitting,” Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn said. “A couple of two-out rallies, some two-out hits. Just kind of added to a lead there. Just a super good job by the bullpen. What else can I say? Our starter gave us 4 1/3 and the bullpen did the rest.”
Ole Miss got an early lead, but the Hogs don’t let that bother them. It’s happened a few times this year, but this team doesn’t hit panic buttons, just other pitchers. After the Rebels got a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Arkansas responded with a four-run rally in the bottom of the first.
Kendall Diggs got it going with an RBI walk by Kendall Diggs and a two-run single from Jared Sprague-Lott to run the total to 3-1. Ryder Helfrick drove in Diggs from third on an RBI ground-out and his third RBI of the year. They also had a 4-1 lead and it really was enough.
A two-run home by Wehiwa Aloy with two outs in the bottom of the sixth ran the lead to 8-3. It was his team-leading eighth homer of the year and raised his RBI total to 32 going 1-of-3 at the plate with a homer, walk and three RBI. He’s also got an on-base streak of 19.
Mason Molina did not have his best stuff on the mound but managed to get through 4.1 innings in his eighth start of the season. He allowed three runs, three hits and three walks with five punch outs on 83 pitches (49 strikes) in a no decision.
The bullpen supplied 4.2 innings of relief work from Koty Frank, Christian Foutch and Gage Wood. The trio did not surrender a run while allowing three hits and two walks with six strikeouts.
Ruscin & Zach on why it was never gonna be Beard anyway
We cover all the half truths, misdirection, subterfuge and nonsense of another great Razorback coaching search.
Apparently, Ole Miss coach not as interested in Hogs as thought
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — When Eric Musselman bolted out of town Thursday for California, all eyes almost immediately turned to Ole Miss coach Chris Beard. A lot of speculation and social media chatter “knew” he had an interest in coaching the Arkansas Razorbacks.
If he had the first call to wrap up what a lot of people — including a lot of the media in Oxford — assumed he was already making plans to be in Fayetteville soon, maybe even Friday. Well, that apparently isn’t going to happen now.

Now things will start to get interesting in the hutn for the next coach. If anything a lot of Razorback fans don’t seem to want to remember athletics director Hunter Yurachek doesn’t always do things the way most people assume on these coaching searches.
We get to start rounding up the usual names on the lists everybody tends to come up with right now. This list is in no particular order or ranking, but these are the names getting out there a lot right now:
• Jerome Tang, Kansas State: His biggest claim to fan from folks mentioning him is he was an assistant coach when Baylor won a national championship a few years ago. Even though his head coaching experience is not as big, it has a lot of the main similarities with former Razorbacks coach Mike Anderson. We saw how that played out.
• Will Wade, McNeese State: With a buyout just over $1 million and NIL basically rendering what got him in hot water at LSU now legal, a lot of the sentiment is he’s worth whatever small amount of complaining comes from it. The question is what can they do going forward and can he accomplish with Arkansas what he did at LSU? Just a question to throw out there.
• Chris Jans, Mississippi State: Exactly how that name has popped up on some of these lists is a little surprising. He’s a sitting coach in the SEC, has a buyout to match and has only won one NCAA Tournament game in six attempts. Not sure that’s a track record justifying a buyout that big.
• Bucky McMillen, Samford: There’s a wildcard pick you probably didn’t expect to hear. You will in the future because he’s getting noticed by a lot of people. Fans probably won’t be too happy to hear that name, thinking they can do better, but apparently they can’t quickly. Whether that’s because of affordability or anything else is not known.
But the one name most thought was almost a guaranteed deal won’t be coming anytime soon. He made that clear himself on social media Friday afternoon.
