Three Razorbacks on Senior Bowl watch list
MOBILE, Ala. — Three Arkansas football players were named to the 2018 Reese’s Senior Bowl Watch List, announced by the bowl Thursday.
Quarterback Austin Allen, center Frank Ragnow and linebacker Dwayne Eugene, Jr., were each selected.
Allen is entering his second year as the primary signal caller and coming off a junior campaign that saw him lead the Southeastern Conference with 3,430 passing yards, including a league-best 2,291 in conference play.
He totaled 25 touchdown passes last season to rank second in the conference. Of those, 19 touchdowns came inside the red zone, which led the SEC and tied for 10th in the FBS.
The Fayetteville product tallied nine multi-touchdown pass games and became the first quarterback in school history and one of just four in the SEC since 2000 to throw multiple touchdown passes in each of the first seven games of a season.
A preseason All-American, Frank Ragnow enters his senior campaign after being named the nation’s best offensive lineman, best run blocker and first-team All-America by Pro Football Focus (PFF) last season.
Ragnow has made 26 straight starts heading into the year with 14 at right guard and 12 at center.
The Victoria, Minnesota, native was part of an offensive line that blocked for 428.4 yards of total offense per game and helped the offense log both 200 yards passing and rushing in the same game five times.
Ragnow blocked for nine 100-plus yard rushing games, including seven from Rawleigh Williams III and two from Devwah Whaley, and four 300-plus yard passing games from Allen.
After starting each of the last six games of the regular season, Eugene logged 32 tackles in his six starts and ranked second among Arkansas linebackers with 44 stops.
He tallied four five-plus tackle games, including one double-digit tackle effort against LSU. He also recorded his lone sack of the season against the Tigers.
The Marrero, Louisiana, native recorded one tackle for loss, two fumble recoveries, one interception and two quarterback hurries during his junior campaign.
Last season, Arkansas saw two of its own play in the Senior Bowl in punter Toby Baker and tight end Jeremy Sprinkle. It marked the 11th consecutive season that the Razorbacks were represented in the game.
The 69th Annual Reese’s Senior Bowl will take place on Jan. 27, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. CT at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama.

SEC no longer at the top of the college football heap
To paraphrase Will McAvoy on the HBO series “The Newsroom:” Is the SEC the best football conference in America?
No.
But it can be again.
Yes, there are still plenty of ranked teams, particularly from the always grueling SEC west in this week’s first AP college football poll of the season. Unlike in years past though, there is only one team ranked in the top 10, Number one Alabama.
The ACC is my pick for best conference right now in college football. The ACC has great teams. The SEC has one great team and a bunch of good teams.
The ACC has defending national champion Clemson, powerhouse Florida State, a Louisville program that, not surprisingly, is rolling pretty good under Mr. Petrino and more.
Miami will rise under Mark Richt, Larry Fedora will still be very good at North Carolina and NC State may turn some heads this season nationally.
The best collection of coaching talent is now in the ACC. Swinney, Fisher, Petrino, Richt all belong on the shelf right under Saban and Meyer.
There are not any SEC coaches that belong on that shelf unless you want to make a flimsy argument for Gus Malzahn.
Furthermore, who is the SEC second best coach behind Saban? Dan Mullen? He is about the only quality candidate that is not close to or sitting on the hot seat.
The SEC went with defense when hiring the latest crop of coaches because everyone wants to copy what Alabama has done.
That cannot be done.
Most places cannot recruit enough to dominate on defense have plenty of elite talent on offense too.
Clemson has done it.
Ohio State too.
Not many else.
These things usually don’t change over night so do not surprise yourself when we look up in September or October and see three ACC teams ranked in the top 10 and one SEC team.
Maybe even none.
