Razorbacks can’t stop Ole Miss after trading lead four times in Sunday loss

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas and Ole Miss traded leads four times Sunday afternoon in the rubber match at Baum-Walker Stadium, but it was the Rebels that scored six-straight runs in the sixth and seventh innings to beat the Razorbacks, 10-5, earning the series victory.

The series loss breaks a streak of 18-straight home series losses the Razorbacks have had dating back to April of 2017.

The last home series loss came against Ole Miss (April 27-28), which was the last time the Rebels visited Baum-Walker Stadium.

Arkansas (22-6, 6-3 SEC) had struggles on the pitching staff as they combined for 12 walks in the game. It’s the second time this season the pitchers have walked 12 or more batters in a game, both were losses (14 at No. 9 Texas on March 20).

Ole Miss (20-9, 5-4 SEC) had its leadoff batter reach base in every inning but the first and put the pressure on the Razorback arms early.

Redshirt junior Cody Scroggins worked his way out of a few jams early on for Arkansas, giving up just two runs over four innings, one being a home run.

However, once the bullpen took over, the Rebels were able to put 14 runners on base over the next three innings, scoring eight times and build their lead to five.

Arkansas’ offense responded well early on when it scored twice in the fourth and three times in the fifth to take its only lead of the game at 5-4.

Junior Dominic Fletcher drove in two of the Hogs’ runs with a single in the fourth and a double down the left field line in the fifth. He finished the game 2-for-4 and had five hits in the series, three being doubles.

Fletcher now has 14 doubles this year, which is already two less than he had all of last year. His total also ties for the most in the SEC.

Sophomore Casey Martin provided the only other runs for the Razorbacks in the fifth when he hit his team-leading sixth home run of the year, a two-run blast that tied the game at 4-4.

Martin has two home runs in his last five games and is batting .323 over his last seven games with three multi-hit performances. He went 6-for-13 (.462) in the series against Ole Miss and has a six-game hitting streak.

Along with Martin and Fletcher, Heston Kjerstad, Jack Kenley and Christian Franklin all had two hits in the game. Kjerstad was held hitless in the series until a single in the fourth inning of Sunday’s game.

Kenley has three hits in his last seven at-bats, while Franklin turned in his first multi-hit game since March 19 at No. 9 Texas.

Razorback quotables

“We didn’t give ourselves a chance to win the game. I mean, we walked double digits and hit a couple. We fought back in the game and flipped around the momentum, took the lead 5-4 and come out and walk the leadoff man on four pitches – I think they get a hit, I don’t know what happened after that. Next thing you know they score three. We’re down a couple runs. Give them (Ole Miss) credit, they’ve got a good lineup, but you’ve got to make people earn it, you know. I’d rather them have 20 hits than 14 hits and take away 10 of those walks. I can live with that. It’s not throwing the ball over the plate that really made a difference in the game.” — Coach Dave Van Horn on the 10-5 loss to Ole Miss

“Just talked about paying attention to details. All the little things, like holding runners. Keeping on runners and just throwing the ball over the plate. Make an adjustment. We’re going to make some adjustments, maybe on who travels. If guys can’t throw it over the plate, we’ll give some other guys opportunities. Little things like that.” — Van Horn on his message to the team after the game

“It’s just baseball. You are going to have days when the pitching staff is just not going to be there and we are going to have days where the hitters can’t hit, but today our hitters did a phenomenal job of keeping us in that ballgame, for sure.” — Cody Scroggins on the way things snowball when pitchers are hitting their spots

“Take away some positives from the day, learn from the negatives. That will take you a long way. You learn more from when you lose. Coach (Van Horn) kind of said that and he’s 100 percent right.  So take away positives from the day and learn from the negatives.” — Casey Martin on the players’ message to each other

Warrick’s walk-off double lifts Razorbacks past Kentucky for series win

FAYETTEVILLE — Katie Warrick delivered a third-pitch double down the left-field line to lift Arkansas to its second conference series win with a 3-2 win over Kentucky.

How it happened

Arkansas (25-11, 6-6) got another solid performance from Autumn Storms in the circle today. Storms recorded her 13th win of the season, forcing 15 groundouts from the Kentucky offense. Storms saw the bases loaded twice and gave up no hits in either situation.

The Razorbacks scored first with an RBI single by Warrick in the first frame. Sophomore Hannah McEwen scored on the hit from third, after reaching first on a base hit to the right side.

Kentucky (22-13, 7-5) tied the game at two runs apiece with a two-RBI single through the right side off the bat of Alex Martens.

Arkansas’ defense held strong in the top of the seventh inning when the Wildcats loaded the bases with two hits and an intentional walk to Abbey Cheek.

Haydi Bugarin fielded a ground ball at second base and made the play at first for the final out of the inning as the Hogs avoided any additional Wildcat runs.

Danielle Gibson reached base in the bottom of the inning and Arkansas called on pinch-runner Carley Haizlip. Haizlip advanced to second and into scoring position with a walk by senior Ashley Diaz.

Warrick’s double that followed was the ninth of her senior season, bringing her career total to 20.

The series

The Razorbacks continue to hold the series history in their hands, taking a 33-26 advantage over the Wildcats.

Arkansas has not taken a weekend series from Kentucky since 2013, when the Hogs defeated the Wildcats in games one and two of the series.

Arkansas also moves to 3-0 all-time when playing Kentucky on March 31.

Notables

• Arkansas is now 22-4 when it scores first and 15-1 when the Hogs score in the first inning.

• Warrick recorded her 19th multi-hit game and 16 multi-RBI game.

• McEwen has now reached base in 34 of 36 contests, recording hits in all but four games.

• Diaz tallied 11 putouts in the win, putting her only 19 from moving into fourth all-time at Arkansas for career putouts.

Razorbacks finish strong on final day at Texas Relays on Saturday

AUSTIN, Texas — With seven events on the track, Arkansas had a busy afternoon on the final day of the Texas Relays on Saturday.

Arkansas started the day on the track with the finals of the 4×100-meter relay. Kiara Parker, Payton Chadwick, Janeek Brown and Kethlin Campbell qualified Friday afternoon running 44.17, and followed up that performance by lowering their time to 43.62 – the fifth-fastest performance in program history.

In the final of the 100-meter hurdles, Janeek Brown charged out to a lead she held until the final hurdle where she clipped the barrier causing her to lose her balance as she dove torwards the finish line.

Brown took second in a season-best 12.97 while Chadwick followed close behind in third-place at 13.13. Brown’s time is currently the No.2 time in the NCAA trailing only LSU’s Tonea Marshall who bested Brown by a mere one one-hundredth (.01) of a second in Saturday’s final.

Kiara Parker, who qualified for Saturday’s final of the 100-meters with a season-opening 11.21, finished fifth in the final running 11.30 followed by teammate Kethlin Campbell in seventh at 11.56.

Razorbacks can’t get key hits as Rebels even series with 4-3 win Saturday

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas couldn’t string enough hits together Saturday afternoon as Ole Miss rallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat the Razorbacks, 4-3, and force a deciding game three Sunday at Baum-Walker Stadium.

Arkansas (22-5, 6-2 SEC) scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning off home runs by Jack Kenley and Christian Franklin, but only had one other hit in the final five innings.

At the time of Franklin’s solo home run, the Razorbacks had the 3-1 lead, but saw it dwindle as the Rebels (19-9, 4-4 SEC) scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings to tie it at 3-3.

In the top of the ninth, Ole Miss took the final lead of the game when Grae Kessinger doubled home pinch runner Carl Gindl to give the Rebels the 4-3 lead.

Arkansas went three-up and three-down in the bottom of the ninth as Ole Miss closer Parker Caracci picked up his seventh save of the season.

Sophomore Casey Martin went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, his second three-hit game of the year. Two of his three hits were doubles, setting a career high and extended his hit streak to five games.

Kenley, Franklin and Jacob Nesbit each had one hit in the game as well. Kenley’s home run was his fifth of the year, tying for the team lead, while Franklin’s was his fourth.

Freshman right-hander Connor Noland had a nice bounce-back start after not making it through two innings last week at Alabama. Noland gave up only two earned runs in 4.2 innings on Saturday against Ole Miss, scattering seven hits and striking out three.

Saturday’s loss drops Arkansas to 4-2 in one-run games this year and 3-1 in games that it has scored three or less runs. It also breaks a streak of seven-straight home wins dating back to March 10 against Louisiana Tech.

Razorback quotables

“It was just one of those games we never could get anything going, offensively. We couldn’t string together two hits. It was one hit here, one hit there, maybe a walk and a wind-blown home run. A couple of outs, we hit another wind-blown home run. Other than that, not much offense. We had a couple of chances early to score a run or two. I think we had a runner at third, less than two, we didn’t get him in. Had a first and second, nobody out, middle of the order out, we didn’t get anybody in. We had a couple of shots and we just didn’t do it. Give them credit. They pitched better than we did. But at the same time, we had an opportunity to stay in the game and win the game and we just didn’t do it on the offensive side.” — Coach Dave Van Horn on the 4-3 loss to Ole Miss

“I thought he threw the ball pretty good. He worked out of a couple jams and had a breaking ball really working well. He started spotting the fastball in on some of the righties and made a mistake. (Tyler) Keenan was going to be his last hitter if he got him out or not and he left a changeup first pitch. It was supposed to be down and away and it was kind of up and in. He clubbed it out of the park. But, he gave us a chance to win the game. When he came out of the game, we were winning. He gave us everything we wanted, so I’m proud of him for kind of bouncing back after a couple of weekends where he didn’t throw real well and he made a big move forward this week.” — Van Horn on Connor Noland

“A lot of times it comes down to Sunday. Probably about seven, eight times out of 10 weekends you’ve got to figure out how to win on Sunday to win a series. It’s always a big game on Sunday, no matter what the situation is, but when it’s 1-1 it’s obviously big for both teams.” — Van Horn on playing a rubber match on Sunday against Ole Miss

“I guess there’s no excuses as good as we’ve been hitting. It’s a little frustrating, but then again, that’s baseball. That’s just how it goes. That’s a good team we just played. They made good pitches and we didn’t make swings. That’s on us. We’ll come back tomorrow. We’ll figure it out and we’ll hit like we have been.” — Casey Martin on the offense’s struggles on Saturday

“Coach (Van Horn) preaches on Sundays, they (teams) win championships. We kind of preached on that a little bit. Even though today didn’t go as we planned, we’ll come out tomorrow and we’ll get the dugout in it, we’ll get the hitters in it and pitching will be there like always. I think we’ll show up and do what we always do just like last Sunday. You got to bring it on Sundays, that’s just part of the game.” — Martin on what it will take to win Sunday’s rubber match
