Hogs hold off Huskies as Dungee’s 37 points paces 90-87 win

For the second time this season Arkansas has knocked off a team ranked in the top five in the country, holding off UConn, 90-87, at Bud Walton Arena.

The Razorbacks improved to 12-6 overall with the win. It was the first loss for the Huskies this year.

The 2020-21 season is the first in program history to see the Razorbacks knock off two teams in the top five in the same season, as Arkansas also beat then-No. 4 Baylor at home, 83-78, back on Dec. 6.

UConn, the gold standard in women’s college basketball, has 11 national championships as a program.

Tonight marked their first loss this season, and only their ninth loss as a program since the 2014-15 season.

Arkansas guard Chelsea Dungee was simply unbelievable in the win, going for a season-high 37 points in the biggest game of her career.

The redshirt senior could not be stopped all game long, putting in 13 of her 21 shots on the night, including four of her five three-point attempts.

Dungee saved her best for last, putting in 22 of those points after halftime. Redshirt senior guard Amber Ramirez played another phenomenal game, meeting the moment with 22 points of her own, shooting 50 percent from the field (8-16) and 50 percent from deep (5-10).

Turning point

Both teams lit up the scoreboard in the first half, each shooting over 50 percent from the field.

A 7-0 Arkansas push toward the end of the second quarter helped Arkansas to manage just a two-point deficit at halftime against the Huskies after UConn hit a shot just before the halftime buzzer.

Arkansas, who leads the SEC in three scoring categories this year, had no problem putting the ball in the basket against one of the best teams in the nation in the second half.

The third quarter was owned by the Razorbacks, as the Hogs outscored UConn 31-19 in the frame, including a 9-0 run out of the gate, aided by six three-pointers on seven attempts.

After extending the lead to nine points by the end of the third, the fourth quarter saw both juggernaut offenses at work, as each team tried to grab the lead.

Husky guard Paige Bueckers was simply phenomenal in the fourth quarter, keeping UConn in it with 15 points in the final frame alone.

Despite falling in close games earlier in the season, Arkansas did not falter late, making clutch shots down the stretch to hold the advantage until the final buzzer.

Hogs highlights

• Dungee is the only Razorback to ever score 37+ more than once in a career. She has now done so three times — 41 against Auburn (2-7-19); 38 against Mizzou (1-12-10); and 37 against UConn (1-28-21).

• She also extended her double-digit scoring streak to 21 games, and her 20+ scoring streak to eight.

• Sophomore guard Makayla Daniels contributed 11 points while also guarding Christyn Williams in her homecoming.

• Senior forward Taylah Thomas was a game-high +17 against UConn. She scored four points and pulled down seven rebounds.

•¶ Ramirez’s five threes in the game was one-shy of her season-high.

Hogs facing challenging schedule this year, Murphy says on The Morning Rush

Last year’s three wins in the SEC could equal a 6-6 record for Arkansas this year with non-conference games included, but it won’t be easy.

Davis kick-starts Hogs, Notae scores points, Vanover blocks Ole Miss

Freshman Davonte Davis came off the bench for Arkansas against Ole Miss, then JD Notae provided the points and Connor Vanover blocked any comeback.

The result of all that was a 74-59 win by the Razorbacks in a complete team effort.

And it all started happening in the first half when Davis checked in with 15:52 left in the first half and the Hogs trailing, 9-5.

“He’s such a great energy guy for us,” Eric Musselman said later. “He comes in, he gets loose balls, tracks down rebounds that are out of his area. He did a really good job from a defensive standpoint.”

Davis also did a pretty good job on offense, too. He got 14 points, six rebounds and had two steals but maybe more important it seemed he had as many just disruptions that created unforced errors by Ole Miss.

Whether that’s even a stat anywhere or not I have no idea, but the Rebels’ offense couldn’t do much when Davis was on the floor. It often appeared he was everywhere at once.

It really showed up as the Hogs held the Rebels to 1-of-16 on three-pointers, an area Musselman has been frustrated with since the start of the season.

“Devo was phenomenal with that,” he said about Davis’ guarding the arc. “It was the first time defensively since that we kind of looked like last year’s team from the perimeter.

“Desi (Sills) did a good job running guys off. (Jalen) Tate did a great job running guys off the three-point line.”

Notae also started putting up points, too, after getting a green light from Musselman.

“Coach said if I’m open, shoot the ball,” he said later.

Notae did that, putting up 19 points (including 3-of-6 on three-pointers) and he also got five rebounds.

With Davis and others shutting down Ole Miss’ outside game, Vanover pretty much blocked any chance of going inside. He had five blocks, according to the stat sheet.

“I think I had more than that,” Vanover said later. “There were a couple of tips they didn’t count.”

Now the focus will be on the SEC-Big 12 Challenge matchup over in Stillwater against Oklahoma State on Saturday. Musselman was anxious to put the win over the Rebels in the rear-view mirror and look ahead to the weekend.

“Good ballgame for us, good win in conference and now we just have to get ready for the last non-conference game,” he said.

He’s on social media and it’s a solid bet he knew what the Lunatic Fringe was saying after bad road losses to Alabama and LSU a couple of weeks.

As I suspected, those were two very good teams and things would turn around.

Musselman made some adjustments and now the Hogs have a three-game SEC winning streak.

Oklahoma State is square in the middle of the pack in the Big 12.

And Musselman wants to keep the momentum going.
