Arkansas football isn’t the only program in Fayetteville staring down a rough road this fall.
The Hogs’ basketball team is walking into a similar storm and this time it’s John Calipari explaining why.
While Ryan Silverfield tries to steady a first-year football roster against one of the toughest schedules in the Power Four, Calipari’s basketball group carries a very different burden.
Expectations are sky-high in Fayetteville and this year’s slate won’t make chasing them any easier.
The Razorbacks have already locked in five marquee non-conference basketball games for the 2026-27 season. Every single one of them is being played away from home.
Why the Hogs keep hitting road
Calipari didn’t dodge the question when it came up Monday.
He pointed to games against Michigan State in Detroit, Indiana at Madison Square Garden, Arizona in Phoenix and a trip to North Carolina as proof his team isn’t ducking anybody.
“Our Thanksgiving game has been the highest-rated game the last two years,” Calipari said. He added this year should be no different with that same Detroit matchup against the Spartans drawing eyes again.
A day after his comments, word came from Rocco Miller that Virginia would round out the group as opponent number five.
That game is expected to happen in Washington D.C. in early November, giving the Hogs a fifth true road or neutral-site test against a power-conference name.
It marks back-to-back seasons where Bud Walton Arena has hosted just one marquee non-conference game.
Last year that lone showcase came against Louisville as part of the SEC/ACC Challenge.
The effort behind an imperfect slate
Here’s the part fans might not know. Calipari says his staff tried hard to bring more big games to Fayetteville and simply couldn’t get takers.
“We did everything we could to get another home game, legitimate. No one would play us,” Calipari said. He went further, saying his staff called roughly 300 schools trying to find a partner, including reaching out directly to presidents at top 50 programs.
That reluctance from other schools tells its own story. Since Calipari arrived in 2024 the Razorbacks haven’t dropped a single non-conference game inside Bud Walton Arena.
His overall home record sits at 29-5 and he hasn’t lost a home game by more than eight points.
It’s not hard to see why athletic directors elsewhere might avoid sending their teams into that building.
Relief is coming next season
The road-heavy stretch isn’t permanent.
Calipari says next season should flip the script entirely with Arizona and Michigan State both traveling to Fayetteville along with an ACC opponent as part of a home-and-home swap.
“That would be maybe the best home schedule,” Calipari said of the 2027-28 slate. “This year we’re maybe the best neutral schedule.”
For now the Hogs get their first look at the 2026-27 group Friday against the Bahamas National Team, the opening exhibition in the Baha Mar Hoops Summer League.
