Razorbacks get shortest training camp of Silverfield’s coaching career

Ryan Silverfield has been coaching football for almost 30 years and he’s never had less time to get a team ready than he does right now.

Considering he’s starting with about 80 new faces around just finding the field from the dressing rooms isn’t as automatic for everybody the way it has been.

“With only 10 practices that includes a scrimmage before the fall semester begins on Aug. 17,” Silverfield said.

His staff is treating this stretch as the shortest camp he’s been part of in his career. The season opener against North Alabama sits exactly one month from the first practice.

That’s a tight window for any coach walking into a new job. It’s an even tighter one for a program trying to erase a season it would rather forget.

A short calendar means a physical camp

Silverfield isn’t using the shortened timeline as an excuse to slow things down. If anything he’s speeding up.

“It’s got to be a physical camp because we can’t expect to have a physical ball club and not have physical contact practice,” Silverfield said. “Obviously there’s limitations, how many tackling scrimmages you can do, how long before you go to full pads, but go out there and push them and strain them.”

He knows there’s a balance to strike.

Contact builds toughness, but too much of it can wreck a roster before the season even starts.

“We want to be healthy because we know how important health is in this conference,” he said. “But I think they got to go out and understand this is different. This is not spring football, this is not summer OTAs. This is certainly not what it’s going to be like during the season, but for the next two weeks, understand, we got to maximize everything we’re capable of every second.”

That’s a lot of urgency packed into a coach’s opening statement three days before his first practice with the Razorbacks.

The Hogs need every practice to count

Arkansas isn’t walking into camp off a big season with a lot of momentum. The team finished last season on a 10-game losing streak and didn’t win a single SEC game.

That’s the third time that’s happened over the last 9 seasons and it’s probably a big part of the impression folks have of the Hogs. A short camp doesn’t leave much room to fix problems that deep.

Silverfield’s answer to that pressure isn’t a pep talk about turning things around. It’s a demand for effort right now, from everyone in the building, starting Wednesday.

“I’ve mentioned this to our team and our staff: the next couple weeks I don’t want anybody to like me,” Silverfield said. “That’s okay. I’m not here for people to like me.”

That line landed hard at Monday’s press conference, but inside the context of a 10-practice camp it reads less like a shot at his players and more like a coach who knows he’s out of time to be patient.

Identity has to show up fast

With so little practice time, Silverfield says the Razorbacks don’t get the luxury of slowly discovering who they are. It has to happen now.

“I think that identity is going to be set during camp,” he said. “The one thing I told you a long time ago, we’ve got to be the best in the country in the controllables.”

He’s not chasing a flashy label either.

“If our identity is the team that plays with the best effort in college football, that plays really sound, I’m okay with it, those are good things,” Silverfield said. “It doesn’t sound as cool as saying, ‘we’re explosive and we’re going to light up the scoreboard. We are going to play sound defense and blitz.'”

Silverfield made clear that whatever identity comes out of these 10 practices belongs to the players, not to him.

“I want the guys to set the identity,” he said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s ‘hey, it’s Ryan Silverfield’s identity.’ No, hell no. It’s what the players want, what the players are going to ultimately identify with and who they are, and then, what they feel when they are in the locker room.”

Silverfield made these comments during his 40-minute press conference Monday ahead of Wednesday’s first practice.

Key takeaways

  • Silverfield called this the shortest training camp of his nearly 30-year coaching career with only 10 practices before Aug. 17
  • The compressed schedule is pushing Silverfield to demand physicality and urgency from the Razorbacks starting with the first practice
  • Silverfield wants the team’s identity built by the players themselves during this short window rather than handed down by him
